downtown Dalton.
We are enjoying
the convenient
downtown location.
We will be
hosting an open
house and ribbon
cutting soon, so
stay tuned for this important announcement.
We want you to celebrate with us!
Our feature story in this issue is about the
many “Victories” of the Archway Partnership.
Read on to see what this community has
accomplished since the Archway Listening
Session where over 350 citizens came together
to share their vision. Indeed there is much
to be proud of in our community and more
ways for YOU to get involved.
One of the ways I have seen a victory is in the
support that elected officials and community
leaders have come together with the initiative
to improve the literacy skills of our students.
This will have long lasting impact on the work
readiness of our population as well as near
term benefit in reducing the need for remedial
efforts to assist those who are not at grade
level.
Mark your calendars for our 3rd Annual
Chamber Classic Golf Tournament which will
be held on Monday, September 24th at The
Farm. Sponsorships are available now!
Please call Beth Morrison for more details on
how your company can get some awesome
exposure at the event (706) 712-0949. In
addition to the wonderful networking opportunities,
there will be TWO hole in one contests
for 2 brand new cars. This promises to be an
exciting day!!
Another exciting day will be Thursday, July
12th at the NorthWest Georgia Trade &
Convention Center where we will be hosting
our Business Expo. As I write this article we
have over 100 exhibitors participating this
year. Your Chamber offers so many great
opportunities for networking and exposure, I
hope you will take advantage of them.
Feature Story
University of Georgia Archway Partnership and the
Dalton-Whitfield Community Work Together for Progress
student on grade level in the early grades. This
announcement reflected the hard work of hundreds of residents
who engaged in Archway Issue Work Group discussions
centered on education.
Soon after the University of Georgia selected Whitfield
County as an Archway Partnership community in 2009,
local leaders met with University of Georgia faculty members
to discuss expectations for the partnership. With the
goal of helping Whitfield County achieve high-priority
goals through the application of higher education
resources, the Archway Partnership posed the following
question to the Archway Executive Committee: What
does “victory” look like in this community
The varied answers to that question included:
• Dalton State College has a sports and music program.
• Revival of Dalton’s entrepreneurial spirit
• Cultural growth
• Downtown business development
• More community engagement
• Enhanced social capital
• Increased young, educated workforce
• A Young Professional Association
• Traffic!
• Dashboard of critical data
• Larger white collar workforce
• Low unemployment
• Our community is educated on our strengths and weaknesses
• Validation of myths-perceptions about Dalton
• High-tech located in Downtown
• Seamless discussion between groups
• Unification of priorities
Today, thanks to the tireless work and intentional actions
of hundreds of citizens, over 50 University System of
Georgia students, and over 35 faculty members, our community
has accomplished many of the items on this list!
For example:
• In June, the City of Dalton, Whitfield County, Dalton
Public Schools, Whitfield County Public Schools, the
Chamber of Commerce, and the Archway Partnership
joined forces and – in a historic display of unity –
announced that they were making a community commitment
to investing in public education and getting every
Community leaders unite for literacy.
• In 2011, the community achieved a major milestone
when Georgia Northwestern Technical College opened its
doors at the Northwest Georgia College and Career
Academy.
• This summer, community leaders hosted the second
Design, Engineering, and Manufacturing Camp to expose
middle school students to highly skilled career options in
local industries.
• A community strengths and weaknesses analysis
revealed that poor nutrition was impacting the school
readiness of our birth through age 5 population, and
community partners worked to secure the Expanded Food
and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in cooperation
with UGA Cooperative Extension, WIC, and the local
health department, which should be operational this fall.
• In fall 2011, community leadership teamed up to host
author and economist Rebecca Ryan to speak to the community
about attracting and retaining young professionals.
That event inspired area young professionals to revitalize
a group started in 2010 called the Young Professionals of
Northwest Georgia. In furtherance of the group’s mission
July 2012 www.daltonchamber.org Chamber Link 3

Feature Story
of attracting, connecting, retaining, engaging, and developing
Greater Dalton’s future leaders, it currently hosts
monthly socials, luncheons, and breakfasts.
and culture councils and, based on their recommendations,
community leadership is currently considering how
to bolster existing cultural opportunities by using them as
an economic development tool.
• For those who desired an increase in traffic, you need
look no further than downtown Dalton at lunch time on
any given weekday. In June, thanks to the City of
Dalton’s careful planning, the Chamber of Commerce and
the Carpet and Rug Institute relocated to downtown
Dalton.
Young Professionals recently had an outing at the Dalton Golf &
Country Club.
• Through the Archway Partnership, Dalton State College
and University of Georgia students teamed up with the
Downtown Development Authority to conduct surveys and
develop a marketing plan that has led to increased interest
in downtown by business owners looking for space.
Recently, walking trails of downtown have been created
with a brochure to promote them, and – through careful
marketing - Dalton State College students have discovered
downtown Dalton.
• With an eye towards creating more jobs and raising
the standard of living for all residents, the Dalton-Whitfield
Joint Development Authority has worked to promote entrepreneurship
by partnering with the University of Georgia
Archway Partnership to fund a business incubator study
facilitated by Georgia Tech; creating an online resource
for small businesses; developing a new brand focused on
innovation; maintaining an online dashboard of community
data; and starting an angel investor network.
• In June, Dalton State College hired the second member
to its athletics office. New Senior Associate Athletics
Director Richard Skeel joins Athletic Director Derek
Waugh to launch men’s basketball, men’s and women’s
cross country, women’s volleyball, and men’s and
women’s tennis in the 2013-14 school year.
• In 2010, Dalton State College hired Dr. Ellie Jenkins,
its first full time music faculty member, and now regularly
hosts an expansive schedule of free concerts featuring
professional and amateur musicians representing diverse
genres.
• Over the past year, over 50 community members interested
in enhancing local arts and culture opportunities
have been meeting through an Archway issue work group
to discuss how they can accomplish mutual goals. Thanks
to their leadership and direction, students at the University
of Georgia recently conducted a study on successful arts
A student checks out the downtown walking trails map.
The above examples represent just a smattering of what
this community has accomplished since the Archway
Listening Session where over 350 citizens came together
to share their vision for Dalton-Whitfield. This month take
a moment and celebrate the fruits of your civic engagement!
Successes like those described above reflect unity
and alignment that distinguishes successful, forward-thinking
communities. There is no doubt that there is still work
left to be done, but this community has already established
that it is up for the task.
For the second consecutive year, local students took time off from summer vacation
to attend a week-long Design, Engineering and Manufacturing Camp held at
the Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy. Approximately 40 middle
school students graduated on Thursday, June 14, in the camp graduation ceremony.
The students had the opportunity to learn about the diversity of career choices
available in the local manufacturing industries.
“Even though it’s summer, the students were eager to learn about the different
career fields found right here in Dalton,” said Barbara Ward, workforce development
director for the Dalton-Whitfield County Joint Development Authority. “They
really enjoyed the hands-on learning this week.”
Students spent the week learning about various activities, including 3-D modeling
and fabrication, carpet design and manufacturing, electronics and robotics. Each
of the students was responsible for creating a rug design, designing a race car
and building a circuit board. The campers were also able to tour local advanced
manufacturing plants. The students were amazed at the amount of automation
and the size of the machines being used.
“For many of the students, it was their first opportunity to visit the Shaw Research
& Development Center and local manufacturing plants,” said Brian Cooksey,
operations training & development at Shaw Industries.
The idea for the camp grew out of the work of the Archway Partnership, a
University of Georgia program
designed to help the community
improve opportunities for education,
quality of life and the economy.
Plans are underway for next
year’s Design, Engineering and
Manufacturing Camp and camp
organizers expect to have even
more students.
Diplomat of the Month
Diplomat of the Month
Michael Outlaw
It is such an honor to be selected Diplomat of the month for the
Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce. Even though I was
most recently a Diplomat with my past employer I am excited
to maintain my contacts with the Chamber as I venture into
opening my own business. It is going to be a slow process but
I know the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce is an excellent
resource for new businesses getting started. I have been
fortunate to attend many ribbon cutting ceremonies of new
businesses in our area and see the Chamber’s involvement
firsthand. Assistance as you open is one of many events and
services the Chamber provides local businesses. The networking
that is available through the Chamber is amazing.
I have lived in Dalton most of my life and am married to my
high school sweetheart Magan Outlaw. We have 3 sons,
Morrison who is almost 12 and twin boys Michael and Paul
that are 1 ½.
I look forward to working more with the Chamber in the
future.
Go Green
Saving Energy is as easy as
ABC.....Americas Best Choice
Windows of Dalton that is
2012 Chamber
“Green” Sponsor
Basically The Low E2 coating in the window reflects
away the UV rays that heat up your home before they
enter the house. This results in a lower room temperature
and a dramatic reduction in harmful effects of sun
damage such as fading of fabrics and flooring. It also
means the HVAC units will have to work less to maintain
a comfortable temperature in the home. This will
not only save money on utility bills but will extend the
life of the HVAC unit itself due to it not having to work
as hard.
2. U-Factor
U-Factor measures how well a product prevents heat
from escaping a home or building. The lower the U-
Factor, the better a product is at keeping heat in. U-
Factor is particularly important during the winter heating
season.
While all of America´s Best Choice windows are energy
efficient, certain options and upgrades are available
to increase energy efficiency and significantly reduce
utility costs. The addition of Low-E Glass and Argon
Gas, combined with our Intercept Spacer System, can
increase the efficiency of windows by 35-40 percent.
The more energy efficient the window, the lower your
utility bills in both summer AND winter. In addition, the
strain on your HVAC system is reduced, which lengthens
the life of your equipment. Harmful UV rays are
also reduced when using the Low-E glass coating, thereby
protecting drapes, carpets, artwork, hardwoods, furniture,
etc. from harmful UV rays. There are several
ways the efficiency is measured in windows but here
are two of the main ones.
1. Solar Heat Gain
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how well
a product blocks heat from the sun. The lower the
SHGC, the better a product is at blocking unwanted
heat gain. Blocking solar heat gain is particularly
important during the summer cooling season.
In the winter time the cold outside can transfer inside
through the temperature changes in the glass panes.
The Argon Gas inside Americas Best Choice Windows
is a very efficient insulation. In a regular window without
Argon (or a window where the Argon gas has
leaked out) If it is 0 degrees outside then the outside
pane of glass measures 17 degrees and the inside
pane of glass that you sit next to while reading or
watching TV measures in at a chilly 35 degrees. That's
where the cold air you feel comes from. The Argon gas
will make that inside pane of glass remain a steady 65
degrees. This will be a lot closer to the settings inside
the home, meaning your rooms will stay warmer due to
no transference of cold air. This will also stop the
“sweating” some people experience on the inside of
their windows.
Americas Best Choice LowE2 windows are Energy Star
Certified and do qualify for Tax Credits and Rebate programs
through several utility companies. Choosing
energy efficient windows from Americas Best Choice is
a smart choice that not only reduces utility costs, but is
good for the planet too! Call today for your FREE in
home estimate and begin saving money while reducing
the amount of electricity you use.
costs possible. Dalton Funeral Home
was founded on the belief that everyone
deserves a unique and meaningful
funeral service, regardless of financial
difficulties.
Dalton Funeral Home takes pride in
offering merchandise and professional services which
are of the highest quality, and are always available to
you and your family at a fair cost, guaranteed. We
offer a diverse selection of caskets, monuments, vaults,
and urns at excellent prices. Our services can be nontraditional
or traditional, cremation with or without a
their church chapel.
Today, many people are pre-arranging their own funerals
to assure their family that they will not have to make
all of the decisions. A funeral is a personal and emotional
occasion a family shares. To pre-arrange we
combine your historical information and your personal
preferences with a payment to fit any budget. You can
show your loved ones you care by planning your funeral
services.
Did you know that once you pre-arrange your funeral,
you can transfer your plan to another funeral home
Because so many people relocate, the funeral arrangements
are transferable. Dalton Funeral Home honors all
pre-arranged funeral services locally and out of state.
Independently owned and operated Dalton Funeral
Home is a comfortable and beautiful place for the families
