<strong>Exeter</strong> <strong>College</strong> elects distinguished journalist as next Rector<br />

research at the <strong>College</strong> since<br />

1966, Jim Hiddleston retired<br />

FELLOWSHIP<br />

John Brown, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Chemistry<br />

and Fellow at <strong>Exeter</strong>. A highresolution<br />

spectroscopist with a<br />

special interest in the study <strong>of</strong><br />

short-lived free radicals, he is<br />

highly regarded for his work in<br />

both theoretical and experimental<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> this field and has an<br />

international reputation for his<br />

ability to interpret the complicated<br />

spectra involved.<br />

The winning film <strong>of</strong> Filming<br />

Literature <strong>2003</strong> was made by<br />

Maja Kominko.<br />

Frances Cairncross has been elected to the Rectorship <strong>of</strong> <strong>Exeter</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

She will take up <strong>of</strong>fice in October 2004, on the retirement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

distinguished scholar <strong>of</strong> English Literature, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Marilyn Butler.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Butler was the first female Rector <strong>of</strong> a formerly all male<br />

<strong>College</strong> at <strong>Oxford</strong>.<br />

Ms Cairncross has been Management Editor <strong>of</strong> The Economist<br />

for five years. She has worked at The Economist since 1984 –<br />

during which time her editorial responsibilities have covered Britain,<br />

the environment, media and communications and, currently, management.<br />

She was economics correspondent <strong>of</strong> The Guardian from 1973­<br />

84, and prior to that spent periods on the financial staff <strong>of</strong> The Times,<br />

The Banker and The Observer. She has published a number <strong>of</strong> books<br />

on themes linked to her journalistic specialisms.<br />

In addition to being a distinguished journalist, she is the chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Economic and Social Research Council, a non-executive director<br />

<strong>of</strong> Alliance & Leicester plc and Senior Fellow at the School <strong>of</strong><br />

Public Policy, UCLA. She holds an honorary fellowship at St Anne’s<br />

<strong>College</strong> – where she read Modern History as an undergraduate in the<br />

mid-1960s – and a visiting fellowship at Nuffield <strong>College</strong>. She holds<br />

honorary degrees from Glasgow, Birmingham, City and Loughborough<br />

Universities and an MA in Economics, Brown <strong>University</strong>, Rhode<br />

Island, in addition to her first degree from <strong>Oxford</strong>.<br />

The Sub-Rector Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Helen Watanabe said: “The Fellows<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Exeter</strong> <strong>College</strong> are delighted to have been able to elect such a distinguished<br />

successor to Marilyn Butler. We are looking forward to<br />

Frances Cairncross leading the <strong>College</strong> during this crucial time in our<br />

history, and in the build up towards our 700th anniversary in 2014”<br />

Frances Cairncross said: “I’m looking forward enormously to being<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oxford</strong> at this important time in its history<br />

and to joining a <strong>College</strong> with such a high reputation for harmony and<br />

academic achievement.”<br />
