6. Maintain plants <strong>and</strong> seeds ex situ. To protect against the loss ofa population,<br />

attempts at propagation, using cuttings, should be attempted. In addition, seeds<br />

should be maintained at a long-term seed storage facility.<br />

6.1 Maintain plants ex situ. <strong>Plan</strong>ts from several populations should be propagated,<br />

<strong>and</strong> living collections should be maintained. The Atlanta Botanical Garden has<br />

been doing some ofthis work <strong>and</strong> should therefore be a good resource for future<br />

activities.<br />

6.2 Maintain seeds ex situ. Seed collection from distinct populations should be<br />

maintained in long-term storage. Viability of the seeds should be checked<br />

periodically; seeds should be replaced with fresh collections as needed.<br />
