Cover: The need for reliable topographic maps of the areas in which U.S. troops were fighting was met by the Army Map Service of the Corps of Engineers. This detail is from a map printed in 1944 at the scale of 1:25,000 and shows one of the key objectives of Operation Market Garden--the bridge at Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Although the bridge was captured on September 20, 1944, the Allied advance on Arnhem was stalled shortly afterwards.
