Message from
ICC Regional Development Manager – Europe
It gives me great pleasure to welcome
all teams, players and officials to Cyprus
for the ICC European WCL Division 4
Championship.
This year’s tournament sees Austria,
Cyprus, Finland, Luxembourg, Slovenia,
and Switzerland playing a round robin
series of 50-over format matches.
With 2009 being the first year of the
new European structure at this level,
there is much to play for as the winners
will gain automatic promotion to ICC
European Division 3 in 2011.
Personally I would like to thank the Tournament Organiser Muhammed
Hussain, ICC Regional Tournament Referee Richard O’Sullivan, all
other match officials – referee, umpires, scorers and web managers;
groundsmen; match managers; and many other volunteers who have
made all this possible and worked so hard and kindly hosted matches.
Good luck to all those involved and enjoy the cricket. Let’s hope Cyprus
turns on the sunshine as usual!
Yours sincerely
Richard Holdsworth
On behalf of Cyprus Cricket Association,
we welcome all players, coaches, officials,
September 8 to 13, 2009.
This is the first time that an International
Cricket Championship is held in Cyprus,
and not only we are excited by the
opportunity to host an event of this
magnitude in ICC centenary year but
are also thankful to International
this task.
This event would not have been possible without the support of many
volunteers that contributed their valuable time and efforts under
scorching heat to make your visit as comfortable as possible. And I take
this opportunity to salute their enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication
towards promoting and helping Cyprus Cricket.
We extend our gratitude to Cyprus Tourism Organization, Cyprus Sports
Though I am not a native Cypriot but you can only hear good things
about Cyprus from me and I am sure that the warm hospitality extended
towards you during your stay by the local Cypriots will lure you back to
this beautiful island.
Country Profile
Austria
2009 sees the long overdue return of Austria to the international
fold, having previously been perennial campaigners and hosts of ECC
tournaments, with highlights being their finishing as runners-up
in the 2001 and 2003 ECC Trophy, and playing in the 2002 European
Championships B Division.
Austria returns to the international scene after a 6 year tournament
break. This is an exciting squad with a mixture of experience and youth,
which is keen to reassert Austria’s standing in European cricket, with a
substantial number of the players boasting considerable experience.
Cyprus
It has been a bumpy journey in European cricket for Cyprus, exhilaration
in 2006 with a surprise promotion to Div 3 and then disappointment
with demotion in 2007. This is Cyprus third Championship and we
have learned to temper enthusiasm and good fortune with a touch of
discipline, hard work and professional guidance in the form of Coach
Terry Holt from Lancashire CC.
Like most European teams our national team is peppered with all
nationalities, young Cypriots returning with their families from South
Africa, new immigrants from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India,
and our style of cricket reflects this mix of influences.
This year Cyprus hosts the championship. It has been a lot of work and
expense laying new pitches, just for Cyprus to gain home advantage. But
playing against old rivals Finland, Luxembourg and Slovenia, and dark
horses Switzerland and Austria, we need all the help we can get.
Finland
Finland’s cricket team has seen group of young home grown players
graduate to the National Team. Many of the present group were part of
team that represented Finland in the Indoor Championships at home,
in Kuortane, in 2008. It bodes well for Finnish cricket that a solid core of
players is maturing together. Many thanks must go to Ross Walker and
TeachSport U.K. for the support provided.
Jonathan Scamans is our youngest captain ever and has taken on his new
responsibilities with relish. He is amply supported by the vice-captain
Zahid Kamal and some of the more experienced players like Amrik Bhatia,
Ekhpelwak Kuchey, Michael Shaw, Chris Shaw and Sebastian Knight.
A good result in this tournament will be essential for promoting cricket
to schools in Finland. It would be a boost for our league to produce good
quality cricket despite not yet playing on grass regularly. We await our first
game on our new National Ground in Kerava, near Helsinki, next summer.

Country Profile
Luxembourg
Luxembourg made its European tournament debut in 2003 in Vienna
followed a year later by a much-improved performance in Ljubljana. In
2006 Luxembourg were somewhat disappointed not to do better at the
Division 4 tournament in Belgium, but expect to perform well in Cyprus,
with a squad which combines youth and experience.
The captain is William Heath, who has lived in Luxembourg since the age
of two and learnt his cricket there. He has been club captain of Optimists
for a number of years, and has now taken over the national captaincy
from Romesh Paul, who remains in the squad. Other familiar faces will
include ever-presents Nishith Ghandi and Anand Pattabiraman, and
wicketkeeper Graham Cope, who is also a driving force in junior cricket
in Luxembourg. The squad is again managed by former ECC tournament
umpire Bryan Rouse.
Slovenia
Cricket was first played in Slovenia in the small mountain village of
Mežica amongst a group of kids who had been taught the game by Borut
Čegovnik , who had learnt the game on an exchange visit to England in
1974.
Ljubljana cricket club formed in 1997 initially to play a visiting team
from Holland. From then they joined the Austrian League in 1999 and
have been playing ever since. Since then, Mežica, Škofja Loka, Maribor,
Bela Krajina, Motvarjevci, Majšperk, Ljubljana Žabarji cricket clubs have
formed. The Slovenian National Team competed in its first international
tournament when it participated in the 2000 European Representative
Championships held in Austria. Slovenia has played in 2 more European
Representative Championships since – Zagreb 2002 and Ljubljana 2004.
In 2006 Slovenia became an affiliate member of the ICC and played in
the 2006 European Division 4 Championships in Belgium.
Switzerland
In the early 90s a Swiss national side took part in the Cricketer
International tournaments in Guernsey and in Worksop, England,
acquitting themselves well with some excellent performances. The
national side also participated in a number of ECC tournaments in 2001
and 2003. However, due to financial limitations the SCA decided in 2004
to devote available resources to youth development. In addition, a major
programme to increase the number of qualified umpires and coaches
was started. With these programmes now well under way, attention was
again turned to establishing the national side which is taking part in the
Division 4 Championships in Cyprus.
