Class Rank Class rank will be determined at the end of the 7 th semester, using a weighted cumulative GPA from 9 th grade through first semester of 12 th grade. Seniors having a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above will be recognized as Honor Students at commencement. Class salutatorian and class valedictorian will be selected based on a rubric that will weigh GPA, ACT/SAT scores, number of CP/AP classes, and number of overall credits. A tie will be broken by the number of extra-curricular activities. College Testing Information Please note that registration for these tests is approximately one month before the testing dates. See the counselor for deadlines. Our School Code for NHS is 130-440. To be eligible to participate in commencement exercises, students must meet all graduation requirements and meet standards of acceptable behavior throughout the school year. In addition, students must complete a senior checkout process with the office and clear any outstanding fines. Counseling Services Counselors are provided to help students with a variety of needs, including vocations, scholarships, and social development. Each student is assigned a counselor, based on the student’s last name, that is available for students to consult when he or she experience difficulties or problems in any area of life. Requests to see a counselor are available at the front reception desk. Our counseling team also offers several groups on different topics of interest to high school students. The testing program used by the counselors includes tests that will help you identify your interests and skills. If you plan to apply for financial aid or a scholarship, you should contact your counselor early in the school year. Only in extreme cases will schedules be changed in the fall. After the second week of a semester, no student may withdraw from one class and enroll in another for credit. If a student leaves a class after two weeks, the grade on the transcript will be an “F”. The reasons for schedule changes are as follows: 1. Graduation requirements. 3. Error in the scheduling process. 2. Inappropriate placement based on pre-requisites. 4. Extenuating circumstances as per administrative judgment. Early Graduation Permission to graduate from school with less than four years attendance may be granted by the Board of Trustees. All requests for graduation with less than four years attendance shall be presented to an administrator in writing with the student and parent signatures. This request must be submitted to your counselor on or before September 24, 2010 for both first semester completion and year-early completion and on or before February 17, 2011 for second semester completion. An administrator and designated counselor shall make a thorough review of the student’s credits and reasons for the request and make their final recommendation to the Board of Trustees. Enrollment & Withdrawal Procedures Credit Transfer: Credits are accepted from any accredited high school upon receipt of an official transcript. A maximum of four (4) correspondence credits may be transferred to NHS. The counselor must approve all correspondence course work or alternate formats of attaining course credit before starting the course or credit may be denied. Late Enrollment: A student who enrolls after the third week of a semester and who has not regularly attended a secondary school during that same semester shall meet with an administrator, registrar, and counselor to determine the credit that may be earned during the remainder of the semester, schedule of classes, and time of school day. - 9 -
Withdrawal: The procedure for withdrawal is as follows: 1. Authorization for withdrawal must be made by telephone or in person by the parent or guardian. 2. Obtain appropriate forms from the school registrar’s office. 3. Return all school books and library books. Make sure all fees and fines are paid. 4. Take all completed forms to the main office for final clearance. Final Exam Make–Up Procedures Any students who are not able to take their final examinations at the scheduled time must receive permission from an administrator and teacher to make-up their exams before or after the scheduled date. All requests must be made in writing by a parent or guardian. Grade Reporting There are 8 grading periods during the school year. Those periods end on the following dates and parents can expect reports to be available in PowerSchool and sent home with students one week after these dates: • September 21, 2010 (1 st quarter mid-term) • February 4, 2011 (3 rd quarter mid-term) • October 14, 2010 (1 st quarter) • March 10, 2011 (3 rd quarter) • November 17, 2010 (2 nd quarter mid-term) • April 22, 2011 (4 th quarter mid-term) • December 21, 2010 (2 nd quarter) • May 26, 2011 (4 th quarter) If parents have questions regarding a student's grade, they should call the teacher involved or check PowerSchool. Grade Point Average The total number of points divided by the number of counted classes equals the Grade Point Average (GPA). The point system is as follows: A = 5.0* A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0 F = 0.0 *Weighted GPA dependent upon receiving a “3” or higher on the course AP exam. *Advanced Placement or AP classes carry no additional weight towards GPA unless a student takes and passes the AP test with a 3 or better. The weight will be added after confirmation of the score. Because of timing of AP exams for seniors, information to apply a weight adjustment may not be available to be considered in class rankings or graduation GPA status. Graduation Requirements Nampa High School operates on an eight period, alternating day (A-B) block schedule.
