preface Cabinet has recognized the importance of infrastructure maintenance within government and the role that effective maintenance will play in support of ASGISA, and to this end approved the National Infrastructure Maintenance Strategy (NIMS) in August 2006. The National Infrastructure Maintenance Strategy draws extensively on a framework document developed by the Department of Public Works, the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This document is published here because of its importance. The Department of Public Works has been tasked with leading the implementation of the programme to deliver on the strategy. The Department and the cidb have been tasked with overall management of the programme, and the cidb will provide a fulltime programme manager to take responsibility for the programme. national infrastructure maintenance strategy 2
