VICTORIA PARK CEMETERY, BETHNAL GREEN
BURIAL REGISTER INDEX (1853-1859)
HISTORY
Now shown on modern maps as Meath Gardens, the 9 Ä acre site was bought by Charles Salisbury Butler who,
from 1852-1868, was the Member of Parliament for Tower Hamlets. The site is situated south of Green Street
(now Roman Road) and north of the British Rail line running from Liverpool Street Station to Stratford. To its
east is the Regents Canal and present day Usk Street was its western boundary. A short distance further south
was Mile End Workhouse in Bancroft Road which is now Mile End Hospital.
The land was originally bought with the intention of building houses upon it
but Charles Salisbury Butler was persuaded to use the plot as a cemetery
with the potential for a steadily increased income. However, this failed to
materialise as the land was situated in a very poor area of London and a
good percentage of the burials were of people who died in the workhouses.
Opened in 1845 the cemetery catered for Non-conformists and buried
people from all over London. In 1876 the cemetery closed due to lack of
space and the dreadful conditions into which it had deteriorated. A rough
estimate of the number of burials during the cemetery’s 31 years of
existence range from 250,000 to more than 300,000.
In 1884 the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association raised money to grass
over the cemetery and, together with the London County Council, turned it
into a much needed green space. It was renamed Meath Gardens in
tribute to Lord Meath, the association’s chairman and officially opened by
the Duke of York (the future King George V) on 20th July 1894.
The stone arched gateway to the cemetery is still in situ.
THE REGISTERS
Although the cemetery started in 1845 the first register is missing and has never been filmed. It was lodged in a
solicitor’s office but despite attempts to find its whereabouts after the solicitor closed his office, it has never been
recovered. The Society published the first two extant registers, from 1853 to 1856, in 2008. This is the final
completed Index which includes the third volume.
Register 1 starts from 30 th October 1853 and ends on 25 th March 1855. Surnames beginning with the letter ‘I’ are
missing. Register 2 starts from the end of March 1855 and finishes on 31 st December 1856 with only the letter
‘X’ missing from the surnames. Register 3 starts from 1 st January 1857, finishes on 31 st December 1859 and
contains just over 37,000 entries (including variants). Unfortunately surnames beginning with the letters X, Y and
Z are missing from the original register. The combined available registers produce a total of over 64,000 entries,
which includes a number of variations of names.
Microfilm copies of the registers are to be found at the National Archives at Kew under piece numbers RG8/42-51
and at Tower Hamlets Local History Library, Bancroft Road, Stepney.
No attempt has been made to correct any mis-spellings which occur in the original registers or to exclude entries
which have been crossed out. There are a few entries where two surnames have been given and both
alternative names have been included.
It seems to have been the custom at this cemetery for the parish burials to be written up at the end of the
month, and sometimes at the end of the year! Therefore if you are checking the microfilm for a certain date,
ensure you check further pages. For further details regarding parish burials a visit should be made to the London
Metropolitan Archives at 40, Northampton Road, London, EC1R OHB for access to the workhouse registers.
