2012 World Ayrshire Conference
South Africa
World Ayrshire Federation Booth with
US Ayrshire Booth at World Dairy Expo
I hope you are all well. We had another conference planning meeting
yesterday down in the Cape and I am glad to report that arrangements
are coming together really well and everyone is getting very excited.
It is awesome that we have so many delegates coming from all around
the world and I have a feeling that there will be quite a few late
applications. So far we have about 100 confirmed which fits into 3
busses quite comfortably. Another pleasing aspect is the number of
people staying on for part 3 which is going to be awesome.
As we get closer to the conference there are quite a few issues to
address and get going on. Please would you give some thought and
time to some of the following;
International Ayrshire magazine. The World Photo Competition will
be included in this magazine. We would like 2 articles per country
made up of 3 pages including photos (Total of 6 pages per country).
Ads will be @$300 for full page colour and $200 for a half page. The
deadline is: January 30, 2012.
Embryo Sale. The embryo sale that is to be held during the conference.
We would like to have a maximum of 4 lots per country. Each lot to
consist of 4 embryos. Embryos to stay in country of origin but sold with
details of which country they qualify to enter. Deadline for consignments:
February 28, 2012. Entry to be done by email with pedigrees
and photos to Olene.
There will be an elite sale of animals before the national show. Animals
bought will be shown in the new owners name. Many of the sellers
and breeders are prepared to enter into partnerships with overseas
guests to spice things up. We will be presenting a trophy to the best
performing new purchase at the show.
I have organized 2 World federation meetings during the conference
of 90 minutes each, so I hope that all the delegates will be present to
make the most of our time together.
There has been interest from the US Ayrshire Association regarding the
2016 WAC. We need to ask member countries again if any others are
willing to host the conference. I would like to be able to confirm the
next venue before the end of the conference.
Besides all the fun we are going to have on conference we really hope
that all participants will be impressed by the Ayrshires that they are
going to see and that everyone will be inspired to continue developing
the breed when they all return home to their own herds.
The Conference sessions to be held in Cape Town will feature speakers
on milk marketing, genomics and other topics related to our dairy
business. Each member country will have 15 minutes for the country
report.
Please send all information or address any questions about these
conference activities to Olené Van Vureen, olene@ayrshire.co.za.
I wish you and your families a very safe and happy holiday season.
Kind Regards,
Kevin Lang
The Bell Booth
Achiever Award for persons who have
made some notable achieve-
ment in the Ayrshire breed was presented to Tony & Jolanda Ackermann of Leeston,
Canterbury. Tony & Jolanda emigrated from Switzerland in 1996, purchasing the
Merioneth Stud of Gordon & Lynette Chamberlain as a going concern. Tony has
since developed d a passion for the Ayrshire cow and last season they picked up
awards for the highest producing Ayrshire herd in Canterbury, along with the
highest BW in Canterbury. The Ackermanns have become active in their local
Ayrshire club, and are now keen Crusaders supporters. rs.
The Kiteroa Trophy was awarded to Barry & Deidre
Tippett of Opunake. Barry &
Deidre have long been recognised for their achievements ents in the show ring, but it is
the extra effort
undertaken in the last year or so that have seen them win this
prestigious award ard for the persons who have contributed the most to the breed in
the last twelve months. Barry & Deidre have taken a number of young Taranaki
breeders under
their wing and incorporated them and their stock into their team,
providing invaluable advice and assistance, commenting that this has given them
the impetus to continue showing themselves.
Ayrshire New Zealand International Youth Tour February 2011
Christchurch. Participants
visited nine Ayrshire herds and the
Lincoln University
Reserach farm during the tour and a highlight was the NZ Dairy Event held at Feilding
over three days where they met many more New Zealand Ayrshire breeders, and saw
the best of our show cows on parade.
The tour also took in many ’kiwi’ sights and activities including bungy jumping and
parasailing in Taupo, a Maori Cultural evening in Rotorua, water skiing on the Waikato
River, abseiling and caving at Waitomo, a Super 12 Rugby game in Wellington, a jet
boat ride on Akaroa harbour and a visit to a native wildlife centre in CHristchurch.
The participants all had a wonderful time in New Zealand and were keenly interested
in New Zealand
cows and farming practices.
We all learnt from each other – when one
farmer proudly stated he was the fourth generation on his farm (which is a big deal in
New Zealand), one of the tour participants commented ed that he was the 17th genera-
tion on his farm. Coming from snow storms at home, all of the participants basked in
our summer and enjoyed getting to swim in the ocean (a first for some).
Delegates to the International Youth Tour. l-r Pam Allison (Tour Host), Patrick
Zetterqvist, Stefan Akerlund, Nils-Olof Bratt, Vilma Pohjala, Elina Ahola,
Jonathan Glentworth, Dale Macfarlane and Mike Hofer.
Ayrshire New Zealand hosted seven international and one local youth for a tour in
February. Tour participants were Patrik Zetterqvist, Stefan Akerlund, Nils-Olof Bratt
(Sweden), Vilma Pohjala, Elina Ahola (Finland), Dale Macfarlane, Mike Hofer
(Canada) and Jonathan Glentworth (New Zealand). The tour started in Auckland
and travelled to Hamilton, Rotorua, Taranaki, Palmerston North, Wellington and
The tour was unfortunately marred just at the conclusion by a major earthquake in
Christchurch h h that t took 180 lives. Although h we had gone our separate ways about an
hour beforehand, we were able to get most of the group back together on a local farm
that night and self-evacuated to Wellington the following day where we met up with
the rest of the group and everyone arranged new flights home. It was a frightening
experience for all, but luckily all escaped unhurt and most with their belongings
(although the Swedish boys had to wait a few months for theirs).
Ayrshire New Zealand hopes that the World Federation will set up a programme for
Youth Tours to continue in other countries in future years.
FINNISH AYRSHIRE BREEDERS 2011
Finland Ayrshire News
This year started with nothing less than Ayrshire Winter Show 2011 in February. Mr Norman
Boswall from Blackaddar, Canada judged over 100 entries of high class Ayrshires. Rounion Saga
Valentine (RomeoxTrident) owned by Olavi Ahonkivi was Grand Champion and Majaniemen
Ekstaasi (PotterxCopper) from Heli & Antti Teiskonlahti Junior Champion. Mr Colin Davidson
from UK supervised young breeders clipping team and later judged the Junior Handler championships.
Ayrshire Sale of Stars attracted big expo audience and provided excitement and satisfactory
price level of good breeding animals, average being over 2700 euros.
General meeting in April discussed lively concerning changes in Ayrshire herd book and invasion
of Danish grade bulls to active bull list of Ayrshires. This discussion is still going and raised interest
to take active part in Faba delegate election in November as over 30 Ayrshire breeders
announced candidacy.
Highlight of a warm summer was Farmari Ayrshire Show in beginning of July. Ayrshires paraded
to show ring in tropical conditions and where honoured by few hundred spectators including
president of Finland, Mrs Tarja Halonen. Mr Duncan Hunter from Haresfoot UK drew Great
Champion Joukolan Vohveli (DanescoxNelson) from Laura & Jouko Laiholahti and Junior
Champion Hilla ET (PokerxBB Garth) from Jenni & Tero Uusitalo. Special event and big fun was
Heifer Agility featuring judge Hunter.
Duncan Hunter participating in agility class
In general meeting in November Heli Teiskonlahti and Katariina Ikkeläjärvi were elected as new
members to the board of Finnish Ayrshire Breeders and Minna Kotila was elected as president.
Beside these events society has organised two classification rounds this year and latest being
number 20 contributed by Ayrshire Canada and Mr Yves Charpentier as classifier. In few years
we have accomplished great improvement in member herds. To tribute this commitment to
breed, society will announce and reward best Ayrshire herds in regards of classification and
production, Best Ayrshire Herd 2011. Award ceremony will be held in next Ayrshire Winter Show
News from the UK
December 2011
Haresfoot_Maple_Bella
The year started with the complete
e dispersal sale of the world renowned Haresfoot herd
of Ayrshire’s, the property of Duncan and Sarah Hunter from Hertfordshire. re. It certainly
had an international flavour as five lots were sold to five different countries including
Canada, USA, Finland, New Zealand and Northern Ireland. Top price of the day was
£9450($14916 US) for the 4 month old Haresfoot Maple Bella a daughter of the great
Bella 6 EX95 7E who herself sold to Mapleburn Farm ( Canada), and sired by the
Canadian sire Mapleburn Remington. Previous sale averages were smashed with an
average of £3665 ($5783US) dollars for the milking stock and £3127 ($4933US) for the
total sold.
It was another sad day for the breed when John Tomlinson sold his Acton herd later in
the year, and again Ayrshires were in huge demand with a very impressive £2414 (
$3808US ) average for all lots sold and a top price of £9450($14916US) for the EX 92
Acton Saltire Peggy selling to P &S Williams for their Willhome herd.
Shows were again well supported in the UK by Ayrshire breeders. Possibly one of the
most successful exhibits this year was the beautiful heifer Hunnington Fragrance 55
VG87 2yr from the Hunnington herd of Chris and Lisa Window. With no less than 4
junior championships, including 2 of them being supreme Interbreed junior championships,
and sired by the up and coming sire Castern Tornado she certainly is not a one off,
as she comes from a family backed with 4 generations of Excellent.
Hunnington Fragrance 55
The All Breeds All Britain National calf show provided
d the largest display of Ayrshires
shown all year. Not only numerous exhibits but arguably the highest standard we have
ever seen. Interestingly enough was that these calves were not just special to look at but
were daughters of many of the breeds top cow families. Willie Templeton from the Syke
herd was the judge for the day and he found his champion in the January born
Smartmove Calimero Ruby ET, a result of an embryo purchased from Lashburn Ayrshires
in Canada out of Lashburn Ruby EX92. Reserve was Rosehill Real Velour, a Reality
daughter out of the great Rosehill Black Velour EX96 6E.
It has been our privilege and pleasure to host several international visitors this year. Becky
Payne and her sister Shelly, and Doug and Jane Murray from the USA visited our All
Breeds dairy show followed by farm visits in September. Then more recently a group of
12 breeders from Finland came to the Agriscot Show followed by herd visits in Northern
Ireland.
At our recent council meeting it was agreed to adopt a change in the type merit formula
within our breed with more emphasis being given to the traits of body strength, longevity,
mobility and herd health. From this change we will expect to see a change in the type
table ranking with more realistic results of what is really happening on farm!
