Compare the difference in em<strong>is</strong>sions Consumers often ask the question, “<strong>How</strong> much cleaner <strong>is</strong> my new<br />
vehicle compared to my old one being scrapped” Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> an important <strong>is</strong>sue for <strong>SCRAP</strong>-<strong>IT</strong>,® as we not only need to<br />
adv<strong>is</strong>e our consumers but we also need to estimate the smog reduction impact of all the vehicles being scrapped.<br />
In the summer of 2009, the AirCare® Research Centre agreed to ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>SCRAP</strong>-<strong>IT</strong>® in answering th<strong>is</strong> question. Th<strong>is</strong> Research<br />
Centre has the technical facilities to conduct detailed em<strong>is</strong>sion testing. Their em<strong>is</strong>sion tests follow the US EPA75 Test<br />
method and are equivalent to the tests used by vehicle manufacturers to certify their new vehicles meet government<br />
mandated em<strong>is</strong>sion standards. Th<strong>is</strong> test procedure allows for an “apples to apples” compar<strong>is</strong>on of the em<strong>is</strong>sions from old<br />
vehicles being scrapped vs. a new vehicle.<br />
<strong>SCRAP</strong>-<strong>IT</strong>® identified three families in the greater Vancouver area who had scrapped their old vehicle and who had purchased<br />
newer model vehicles. These families agreed to allow the Research Centre to test both their old and new vehicle.<br />
The US EPA75 Test <strong>is</strong> designed to measure the em<strong>is</strong>sion levels of various pollutants. The em<strong>is</strong>sions performance<br />
compar<strong>is</strong>on of the two key pollutants, hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are both precursors for<br />
photochemical smog, <strong>is</strong> shown in the charts below.<br />
