ABOUT KEFALONIA
FROM HOMER TO HOLLYWOOD
Kefalonia is the golden child of the Ionian islands and is fast
becoming one of the most coveted second-home destinations of
the Athenian jet-set. Unassuming and void of brash tourism, there
is something mystical and outworldly about the island. From the
lush olive and citrus groves dotted with tiny historic hamlets on
the south west to the epic scale of the wild mountains and cypress
forests on the Errisos Peninsula in the north; it shimmers with a
bluish-gold luminescence reflected from the turquoise waters of
the Ionian Sea.
The island’s rich history and original beauty have captured the
hearts and minds of some of the world’s most influential icons
and institutions – including Homer and Hollywood. (It was chosen
as the sole location for the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.) More
recently, it has caught the attention of a group of British geologists
and historians who are working on a theory to prove that the Paliki
peninsula on the western coast is, in fact, the real island of Ithaca
as described by Homer in The Odyssey.
In addition to an unending variety of historical landmarks and
places of interest, the island’s steep mountains, protected coves
and crystal waters are perfect for hiking, cycling and water sports.
Laid-back and low-key, Kefalonia feels like a private sanctuary and
its rustic appeal is guaranteed to steal your heart.
