Dear Friends of Friends,
I am pleased to share this special annual report with you during a very important
time for Friends of the Children. Friends is celebrating its 20th anniversary
in 2013, and in this annual report we are pleased to share memories from 20
individuals and groups who have been, and continue to be, essential in creating
the successful organization we are today.
In December of 2012, the Portland Business Journal announced that in their
annual poll of 2,000 CEOs, Friends of the Children was named “Oregon’s
Most Admired” nonprofit organization. We have been thrilled to be in the top
ten for the last six years, and were humbled when we were named number one.
Oregon CEOs believe in Friends of the Children because of the tremendous
return on investment that we create for our community. We are pleased to share
that the Harvard Business School Association of Oregon generously donated
their time again last year to update their ROI analysis, and this time the results
were even more compelling when the ripple effect on siblings, classmates, and
future generations is factored in.
This year Friends of the Children is celebrating 20 years of Mentor Power!
This unique phrase, created for us by the talented team at Wieden+Kennedy,
signifies all of the many ways that our innovative model changes the lives of
our community’s most vulnerable children. Mentor Power! means a caring
relationship for 12 ½ years, no matter what. Mentor Power! means breaking
generational cycles of poverty, incarceration, and early parenting. Mentor
Power! is the inspiration to create a better future.
As I read through these pages, I am truly in awe of the diverse group of talented,
dedicated, and passionate people who have made 20 years of Mentor Power!
possible. Our success is due to the many contributions of past and current staff
members, Board members, volunteers, and donors like you.
Thanks to our community, Friends of the Children works! Our annual third
party evaluation shows that 85% of our youth graduate from high school, 97%
avoid the justice system, and 98% avoid early parenting.
Thank you for making 20 years of Mentor Power! possible, and thank you
for helping us look ahead to another 20 years. With your continued support,
we will make a real and measurable impact in the lives of more of the most
vulnerable youth in our community.

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN
SOCIAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT
In 2012 the Harvard Business School Association
of Oregon generously donated their time to update
their analysis of our program’s return on investment.
Their new analysis found that that every dollar
invested in our preventive model returns $7.60 to
the community due to our direct impact on program
graduates alone. When the ripple effect on siblings,
classmates, and future children and grandchildren
is factored in, this conservative analysis showed the
social return to be nearly 27:1 as a result of higher
wages earned and lower burdens on social safety
nets and the justice system.

DUNCAN &
CINDY CAMPBELL
FOUNDERS, FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN
In 1991, Duncan & Cindy set out to determine the best
way to transform the most vulnerable children’s lives.
They were determined to find a way to help children
that was grounded in solid research, was focused on
quantifiable results, and considered the return on
investment. A two-year research project identified that
the best way to create real change is to start working
with children early, and provide each of them a longterm,
consistent relationship with a caring adult.
Based on these findings, they established Friends
of the Children in 1993, hiring three professional
mentors – called Friends – to serve 24 children in the
neighborhood Duncan grew up in. Over the last 20
years, Duncan and Cindy have slowly transitioned from
the hands-on work that was necessary in the early
days. Today they serve as advisors and ambassadors,
advancing the core values of the Friends of the
Children model throughout the wider community.
Duncan & Cindy envision a world where every child
has a caring adult by their side. They work tirelessly
toward this vision every day, and because of their
efforts more than 1000 youth nationwide have had
a Friend in their life.

Doug was an executive at Nike when, in 1998, Duncan
Campbell recruited him to become FOTC’s first National
Director. He built a successful model to replicate the
FOTC program, resulting in a thriving network that
now includes Portland, New York, Boston, Seattle, and
Klamath Falls.
“I welcomed the opportunity to transition to a nonprofit
organization that, like Nike, reflects a strong innovative,
entrepreneurial, and energizing culture.”
Fourteen years later, the National Board hired Terri
Sorensen to take the national organization to scale.
After successfully leading and growing the Portland
chapter for almost a decade, Terri is working to increase
FOTC’s impact by serving more children and growing
the organization’s programmatic partnerships.

our innovative mentor program model.

all of these tough stories about the youth we serve, and I

Joe was principal of King Elementary, where FOTC
selected our first class of children in 1993. He got
involved because he saw that as hard as teachers were
working, there was something students were missing.
He believed Friends could not only help the most
vulnerable students overcome the challenges in their
lives, but benefit the classrooms and school as a whole.
“FOTC is amazing because the Friends have an influence
not only on the eight children they each mentor, but also
on all the other children in the building.”
JERRELL SPIRES
FORMER FRIEND
Jerrell was a Friend for 14 years, and directed the
transformation of our approach to serving adolescents.
This shift included putting an emphasis on group
programming and training our Adolescent Friend
Advisors to the specific needs of our program teens.
“A few years ago, I was finishing up my Masters degree at
PSU and ran into a young man, who I used to mentor, on
campus. We talked, then I went on to class, where I was
overcome with emotion. Everyone gave up on this young
man, except for FOTC. I believe it is because of FOTC
that this young man was able to attend college.”

Dan has personally supported Friends of the Children
for many years and has a team at Wieden+Kennedy who
generously gives their time and talent to tell our story,
most recently through the Friendonomics campaign.
“Duncan and Cindy showed us how to think differently
when it comes to helping children living in extreme
situations. I suspect their conversation went something
like this...
‘I’ve got it. I’ve got it! What if we hired Mentors’
‘That’s crazy.’
‘And what if those Mentors stayed with their child from
kindergarten right through high school’

John & Geri attended the first Friend Raiser in 1999,
and have been dedicated to Friends of the Children ever
since. They provide constant leadership and support,
opening their home to host events and reaching out
to the community to share their commitment to the
organization. Geri is a member of the Friend Raiser
Steering Committee leadership team, while John is a
member of the Foundation Board and co-chair of the
Development Committee.

the focus on results, and the use of indicators to improve
the organization. We support the endowment fund
because it’s important to us that Friends has a stable and
lasting financial foundation so it can continue to grow
and deliver in the future.”

Maddie’s investment as a young professional was influential
in founding the Ambassador Board. She now serves on the

Stan has led Friend of the Children’s Performing Arts

Natasha’s mentors at Friends of the Children empowered
her to go to college and break the cycles of poverty and
abuse in her family. Now, Natasha has returned to the
program as a Friend to help other youth do the same.

PATRICK
PRE-LAW STUDENT AT UNIVERSITY OF OREGON AND PROGRAM GRADUATE
Patrick had a very unstable start in life, with a mother
in and out of treatment, and a father virtually unknown.
As one of our program youth he excelled with the help
of his Friend, Carlos, and went on to college at U of O.
“FOTC led me to where I am now. Carlos [Patrick’s Friend]
taught me how to use the pain I felt growing up to advocate
for other children who are in the foster care system. I
recently spoke in front of the Oregon State Legislature in
favor of the establishment of a foster youth bill of rights.”
CAMAYA
PRE-NURSING STUDENT AT PSU AND PROGRAM GRADUATE
Camaya entered Friends of the Children in 1995 as
one of only 56 kids in the program at that time. Years
after graduating from FOTC, Camaya still feels like
part of the family. She gives back by tutoring current
program youth.
“Friends of the Children is the reason I am the person
I am today. I volunteer because I want to show the
kids that it is possible to achieve your dreams. I’m a
testimony to that and want to share it with those who
are struggling like I once did.”
DANIEL & BETTY
PROGRAM YOUTH & PARENT
Daniel and his Friend, Arjon, have weathered many storms
and celebrated many triumphs together over the years.
Daniel lost his loving father to drug addiction when he
was 12 years old, and Arjon was there by his side every
day reminding him that he was not alone.
Daniel: “I’m attending college and pursuing a major in
multimedia with the help of Friends of the Children.
Without friends like these to keep me going for the past 12
years, I would never have the amazing life I have now.”
Betty: “My child has grown into a successful young man,
thanks in part to his Friends and the doors of opportunity
that have so graciously been opened through this
wonderful program. Thank you, Friends.”
CARDEANA
PROGRAM YOUTH
When Cardeana was young, her mother worked two jobs
and wasn’t able to be home with her kids as much as
she wanted, often leaving Cardeana’s 6th grade brother
in charge. The shy young girl who entered FOTC is now
a vibrant young woman who is full of life. She is a leader
for our Teen Space programming and will graduate with
honors this year as a three-sport varsity athlete. Her
Friend, Ms. Rená, has been by her side through all the
ups and downs and is cheering Cardeana on as she
leaves for Jackson State University in the fall.

am today. They have given me the tools I need to succeed
in life.”
