Dear <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Friends</strong>,<br />

I am pleased <strong>to</strong> share this special annual rep<strong>or</strong>t with you during a very imp<strong>or</strong>tant<br />

time f<strong>or</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong>. <strong>Friends</strong> is celebrating its 20th anniversary<br />

in 2013, and in this annual rep<strong>or</strong>t we are pleased <strong>to</strong> share mem<strong>or</strong>ies from 20<br />

individuals and groups who have been, and continue <strong>to</strong> be, essential in creating<br />

<strong>the</strong> successful <strong>or</strong>ganization we are <strong>to</strong>day.<br />

In December <strong>of</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>the</strong> P<strong>or</strong>tland Business J<strong>our</strong>nal announced that in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

annual poll <strong>of</strong> 2,000 CEOs, <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> was named “Oregon’s<br />

Most Admired” nonpr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>or</strong>ganization. We have been thrilled <strong>to</strong> be in <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p<br />

ten f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> last six years, and were humbled when we were named number one.<br />

Oregon CEOs believe in <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tremendous<br />

return on investment that we create f<strong>or</strong> <strong>our</strong> community. We are pleased <strong>to</strong> share<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Harvard Business School Association <strong>of</strong> Oregon generously donated<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir time again last year <strong>to</strong> update <strong>the</strong>ir ROI analysis, and this time <strong>the</strong> results<br />

were even m<strong>or</strong>e compelling when <strong>the</strong> ripple effect on siblings, classmates, and<br />

future generations is fact<strong>or</strong>ed in.<br />

This year <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> is celebrating 20 years <strong>of</strong> Ment<strong>or</strong> Power!<br />

This unique phrase, created f<strong>or</strong> us by <strong>the</strong> talented team at Wieden+Kennedy,<br />

signifies all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many ways that <strong>our</strong> innovative model changes <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>our</strong> community’s most vulnerable children. Ment<strong>or</strong> Power! means a caring<br />

relationship f<strong>or</strong> 12 ½ years, no matter what. Ment<strong>or</strong> Power! means breaking<br />

generational cycles <strong>of</strong> poverty, incarceration, and early parenting. Ment<strong>or</strong><br />

Power! is <strong>the</strong> inspiration <strong>to</strong> create a better future.<br />

As I <strong>read</strong> through <strong>the</strong>se pages, I am truly in awe <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> diverse group <strong>of</strong> talented,<br />

dedicated, and passionate people who have made 20 years <strong>of</strong> Ment<strong>or</strong> Power!<br />

possible. Our success is due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> many contributions <strong>of</strong> past and current staff<br />

members, Board members, volunteers, and don<strong>or</strong>s like you.<br />

Thanks <strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> community, <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ks! Our annual third<br />

party evaluation shows that 85% <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> youth graduate from high school, 97%<br />

avoid <strong>the</strong> justice system, and 98% avoid early parenting.<br />

Thank you f<strong>or</strong> making 20 years <strong>of</strong> Ment<strong>or</strong> Power! possible, and thank you<br />

f<strong>or</strong> helping us look ahead <strong>to</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r 20 years. With y<strong>our</strong> continued supp<strong>or</strong>t,<br />

we will make a real and measurable impact in <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> m<strong>or</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />

vulnerable youth in <strong>our</strong> community.<br />

Warmest Regards,<br />

Terri S<strong>or</strong>ensen, President, <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong><br />

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN<br />

SOCIAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT<br />

In <strong>2012</strong> <strong>the</strong> Harvard Business School Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Oregon generously donated <strong>the</strong>ir time <strong>to</strong> update<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> program’s return on investment.<br />

Their new analysis found that that every dollar<br />

invested in <strong>our</strong> preventive model returns $7.60 <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> community due <strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> direct impact on program<br />

graduates alone. When <strong>the</strong> ripple effect on siblings,<br />

classmates, and future children and grandchildren<br />

is fact<strong>or</strong>ed in, this conservative analysis showed <strong>the</strong><br />

social return <strong>to</strong> be nearly 27:1 as a result <strong>of</strong> higher<br />

wages earned and lower burdens on social safety<br />

nets and <strong>the</strong> justice system.<br />

(influence on siblings, classmates & FOTC graduates’ children)<br />

Innovat<strong>or</strong>s, leaders & believers...<br />

Duncan & Cindy Campbell, and Doug<br />

Stamm & Terri S<strong>or</strong>ensen know what it<br />

takes <strong>to</strong> get a revolutionary ment<strong>or</strong>ing<br />

program up and running, get it noticed,<br />

keep it growing and advocate on<br />

behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most vulnerable children<br />

on a national level. They know how<br />

a powerful ment<strong>or</strong>ing program like<br />

<strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> is making a real<br />

and measurable difference in <strong>the</strong> lives<br />

<strong>of</strong> children who face significant barriers<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir success.<br />

MENTOR POWER!<br />

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

DUNCAN &<br />

CINDY CAMPBELL<br />

FOUNDERS, FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN<br />

In 1991, Duncan & Cindy set out <strong>to</strong> determine <strong>the</strong> best<br />

way <strong>to</strong> transf<strong>or</strong>m <strong>the</strong> most vulnerable children’s lives.<br />

They were determined <strong>to</strong> find a way <strong>to</strong> help children<br />

that was grounded in solid research, was focused on<br />

quantifiable results, and considered <strong>the</strong> return on<br />

investment. A two-year research project identified that<br />

<strong>the</strong> best way <strong>to</strong> create real change is <strong>to</strong> start w<strong>or</strong>king<br />

with children early, and provide each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m a longterm,<br />

consistent relationship with a caring adult.<br />

Based on <strong>the</strong>se findings, <strong>the</strong>y established <strong>Friends</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> in 1993, hiring three pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

ment<strong>or</strong>s – called <strong>Friends</strong> – <strong>to</strong> serve 24 children in <strong>the</strong><br />

neighb<strong>or</strong>hood Duncan grew up in. Over <strong>the</strong> last 20<br />

years, Duncan and Cindy have slowly transitioned from<br />

<strong>the</strong> hands-on w<strong>or</strong>k that was necessary in <strong>the</strong> early<br />

days. Today <strong>the</strong>y serve as advis<strong>or</strong>s and ambassad<strong>or</strong>s,<br />

advancing <strong>the</strong> c<strong>or</strong>e values <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Children</strong> model throughout <strong>the</strong> wider community.<br />

Duncan & Cindy envision a w<strong>or</strong>ld where every child<br />

has a caring adult by <strong>the</strong>ir side. They w<strong>or</strong>k tirelessly<br />

<strong>to</strong>ward this vision every day, and because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

eff<strong>or</strong>ts m<strong>or</strong>e than 1000 youth nationwide have had<br />

a Friend in <strong>the</strong>ir life.<br />

“Aside from family, <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> has been<br />

<strong>our</strong> greatest blessing in life.”<br />

DOUG STAMM &<br />

TERRI SORENSEN<br />

DOUG: CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, MEYER MEMORIAL TRUST<br />

TERRI: PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN<br />

Doug was an executive at Nike when, in 1998, Duncan<br />

Campbell recruited him <strong>to</strong> become FOTC’s first National<br />

Direct<strong>or</strong>. He built a successful model <strong>to</strong> replicate <strong>the</strong><br />

FOTC program, resulting in a thriving netw<strong>or</strong>k that<br />

now includes P<strong>or</strong>tland, New Y<strong>or</strong>k, Bos<strong>to</strong>n, Seattle, and<br />

Klamath Falls.<br />

“I welcomed <strong>the</strong> opp<strong>or</strong>tunity <strong>to</strong> transition <strong>to</strong> a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

<strong>or</strong>ganization that, like Nike, reflects a strong innovative,<br />

entrepreneurial, and energizing culture.”<br />

F<strong>our</strong>teen years later, <strong>the</strong> National Board hired Terri<br />

S<strong>or</strong>ensen <strong>to</strong> take <strong>the</strong> national <strong>or</strong>ganization <strong>to</strong> scale.<br />

After success<strong>full</strong>y leading and growing <strong>the</strong> P<strong>or</strong>tland<br />

chapter f<strong>or</strong> almost a decade, Terri is w<strong>or</strong>king <strong>to</strong> increase<br />

FOTC’s impact by serving m<strong>or</strong>e children and growing<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>ganization’s programmatic partnerships.<br />

“There are many great <strong>or</strong>ganizations, but none have a<br />

mission as compelling as <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong>. It is<br />

<strong>the</strong> most inspiring w<strong>or</strong>k I have ever known.”<br />

20 YEARS / 20 PROFILES<br />

In <strong>the</strong> beginning...<br />

<strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> had a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

help, supp<strong>or</strong>t and guidance <strong>to</strong> get it <strong>of</strong>f<br />

<strong>the</strong> ground. Joseph Malone, Mike &<br />

Kris F<strong>or</strong>zley, Tony Hopson and Jerrell<br />

Spires are a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> invaluable<br />

people who were a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong>’s early, f<strong>or</strong>mative years.<br />

With <strong>the</strong>ir help, and that <strong>of</strong> many<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>our</strong> revolutionary program has<br />

changed <strong>the</strong> way ment<strong>or</strong>ing impacts <strong>the</strong><br />

lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most vulnerable children in<br />

<strong>our</strong> community.<br />

MENTOR POWER!<br />

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

MIKE & KRIS FORZLEY<br />

PROGRAM DIRECTOR, FAMILY OF FRIENDS, FOUNDING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR<br />

& PROGRAM MANAGER<br />

Mike & Kris were integral <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> FOTC,<br />

transf<strong>or</strong>ming vision and evidence-based practices in<strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>our</strong> innovative ment<strong>or</strong> program model.<br />

Kris: “A Friend once asked me if I got w<strong>or</strong>n out hearing<br />

all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>to</strong>ugh st<strong>or</strong>ies about <strong>the</strong> youth we serve, and I<br />

said, are you kidding I get <strong>to</strong> see miracles happen every<br />

day. That’s what it really is.”<br />

TONY HOPSON, SR.<br />

FOUNDER, PRESIDENT/CEO, SELF ENHANCEMENT, INC.<br />

FORMER FOTC BOARD MEMBER<br />

Tony served on FOTC’s founding Board <strong>of</strong> Direct<strong>or</strong>s,<br />

and continues <strong>to</strong> be a strong advocate f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> youth<br />

we serve.<br />

“There was a lot <strong>of</strong> energy and excitement on that first<br />

board around what could happen with kids. We knew<br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k needed <strong>to</strong> be done, and if I could put in some<br />

eff<strong>or</strong>t that could help get <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> ground, I<br />

wanted <strong>to</strong> do that.”<br />

JOSEPH MALONE<br />

PRINCIPAL, PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS<br />

Joe was principal <strong>of</strong> King Elementary, where FOTC<br />

selected <strong>our</strong> first class <strong>of</strong> children in 1993. He got<br />

involved because he saw that as hard as teachers were<br />

w<strong>or</strong>king, <strong>the</strong>re was something students were missing.<br />

He believed <strong>Friends</strong> could not only help <strong>the</strong> most<br />

vulnerable students overcome <strong>the</strong> challenges in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

lives, but benefit <strong>the</strong> classrooms and school as a whole.<br />

“FOTC is amazing because <strong>the</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> have an influence<br />

not only on <strong>the</strong> eight children <strong>the</strong>y each ment<strong>or</strong>, but also<br />

on all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r children in <strong>the</strong> building.”<br />

JERRELL SPIRES<br />

FORMER FRIEND<br />

Jerrell was a Friend f<strong>or</strong> 14 years, and directed <strong>the</strong><br />

transf<strong>or</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> approach <strong>to</strong> serving adolescents.<br />

This shift included putting an emphasis on group<br />

programming and training <strong>our</strong> Adolescent Friend<br />

Advis<strong>or</strong>s <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> specific needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> program teens.<br />

“A few years ago, I was finishing up my Masters degree at<br />

PSU and ran in<strong>to</strong> a young man, who I used <strong>to</strong> ment<strong>or</strong>, on<br />

campus. We talked, <strong>the</strong>n I went on <strong>to</strong> class, where I was<br />

overcome with emotion. Everyone gave up on this young<br />

man, except f<strong>or</strong> FOTC. I believe it is because <strong>of</strong> FOTC<br />

that this young man was able <strong>to</strong> attend college.”<br />

f<strong>or</strong> many years and has a team at Wieden+Kennedy who<br />

generously gives <strong>the</strong>ir time and talent <strong>to</strong> tell <strong>our</strong> st<strong>or</strong>y,<br />

most recently through <strong>the</strong> Friendonomics campaign.<br />

“Duncan and Cindy showed us how <strong>to</strong> think differently<br />

when it comes <strong>to</strong> helping children living in extreme<br />

situations. I suspect <strong>the</strong>ir conversation went something<br />

like this...<br />

‘I’ve got it. I’ve got it! What if we hired Ment<strong>or</strong>s’<br />

‘That’s crazy.’<br />

‘And what if those Ment<strong>or</strong>s stayed with <strong>the</strong>ir child from<br />

kindergarten right through high school’<br />

‘But, honey, absolutely nobody’s even tried that.’<br />

‘I know, I know.’<br />

‘Hmmmm. I see y<strong>our</strong> point.’<br />

... and that’s how <strong>the</strong>y’re changing <strong>our</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld.”<br />

John & Geri attended <strong>the</strong> first Friend Raiser in 1999,<br />

and have been dedicated <strong>to</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> ever<br />

since. They provide constant leadership and supp<strong>or</strong>t,<br />

opening <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>to</strong> host events and reaching out<br />

Steering Committee leadership team, while John is a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Foundation Board and co-chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Development Committee.<br />

“We love everything about FOTC—<strong>the</strong> goals, <strong>the</strong> strategy,<br />

<strong>the</strong> focus on results, and <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> indicat<strong>or</strong>s <strong>to</strong> improve<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>ganization. We supp<strong>or</strong>t <strong>the</strong> endowment fund<br />

because it’s imp<strong>or</strong>tant <strong>to</strong> us that <strong>Friends</strong> has a stable and<br />

lasting financial foundation so it can continue <strong>to</strong> grow<br />

and deliver in <strong>the</strong> future.”<br />

MADDIE ANDREWS<br />

PROGRAM OFFICER, CAMBIA HEALTH FOUNDATION, SUPPORTER & BOARD MEMBER<br />

Maddie’s investment as a young pr<strong>of</strong>essional was influential<br />

in founding <strong>the</strong> Ambassad<strong>or</strong> Board. She now serves on <strong>the</strong><br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Direct<strong>or</strong>s and Friend Raiser Steering Committee.<br />

“People in each generation look at problems differently and<br />

bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions. The Ambassad<strong>or</strong><br />

Board serves as a place <strong>to</strong> cultivate new leadership in terms<br />

<strong>of</strong> both board members and leaders who go out in <strong>the</strong><br />

PATRICK<br />

PRE-LAW STUDENT AT UNIVERSITY OF OREGON AND PROGRAM GRADUATE<br />

Patrick had a very unstable start in life, with a mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

As one <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> program youth he excelled with <strong>the</strong> help<br />

<strong>of</strong> his Friend, Carlos, and went on <strong>to</strong> college at U <strong>of</strong> O.<br />

“FOTC led me <strong>to</strong> where I am now. Carlos [Patrick’s Friend]<br />

taught me how <strong>to</strong> use <strong>the</strong> pain I felt growing up <strong>to</strong> advocate<br />

Without friends like <strong>the</strong>se <strong>to</strong> keep me going f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> past 12<br />

she wanted, <strong>of</strong>ten leaving Cardeana’s 6th grade bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

in charge. The shy young girl who entered FOTC is now<br />

a vibrant young woman who is <strong>full</strong> <strong>of</strong> life. She is a leader<br />

f<strong>or</strong> <strong>our</strong> Teen Space programming and will graduate with<br />

hon<strong>or</strong>s this year as a three-sp<strong>or</strong>t varsity athlete. Her<br />

Friend, Ms. Rená, has been by her side through all <strong>the</strong><br />

ups and downs and is cheering Cardeana on as she<br />

leaves f<strong>or</strong> Jackson State University in <strong>the</strong> fall.<br />

“Without <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> I wouldn’t be where I<br />

am <strong>to</strong>day. They have given me <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ols I need <strong>to</strong> succeed<br />

in life.”<br />

20 YEARS / 20 PROFILES<br />

Super heroes...<br />

Our <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> staff have<br />

no capes <strong>or</strong> spandex – just a commitment<br />

<strong>to</strong> making a difference and a passion f<strong>or</strong><br />

w<strong>or</strong>king with youth. The 20 pictured here<br />

each has at least a decade <strong>of</strong> service and<br />

exemplify <strong>the</strong> long-term commitment that<br />

FOTC makes <strong>to</strong> each one <strong>of</strong> its youth.<br />

MENTOR POWER!<br />

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

FOTC STAFF, 10 YEARS <strong>of</strong> Service<br />

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN – PORTLAND<br />

<strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> staff are <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>ganization, and share a deep commitment <strong>to</strong> transf<strong>or</strong>ming <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />

community’s most vulnerable children.<br />

“Life is a j<strong>our</strong>ney, and changes do not<br />

happen overnight. Changes take time,<br />

patience and a committed relationship,<br />

and that’s what we <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> youth.”<br />

Joy Fauth, Program Co<strong>or</strong>dinat<strong>or</strong><br />

“I feel called <strong>to</strong> do this kind <strong>of</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k<br />

because <strong>the</strong>re are always people in <strong>our</strong><br />

lives telling us what we CAN’T do. It’s so<br />

powerful when a child has a trusted adult<br />

who is cheering <strong>the</strong>m on, in <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>or</strong>ner,<br />

and telling <strong>the</strong>m what <strong>the</strong>y CAN do...”<br />

Angel Banta, Friend<br />

“I felt called <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k at <strong>Friends</strong> because<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social change/social justice nature<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> mission. <strong>Friends</strong> is a radical place<br />

where we are able <strong>to</strong> live out <strong>our</strong> values<br />

in carrying out <strong>the</strong> mission. <strong>Friends</strong> is<br />

about love, and that is <strong>our</strong> true power.”<br />

Jack Vollert, Team Leader<br />

“I felt called <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k at <strong>Friends</strong> due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

preventive nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k. Being able<br />

<strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k with kids at such a young age and<br />

stay with <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>y grow naturally<br />

leads <strong>to</strong> better outcomes in <strong>our</strong> youth.”<br />

Rose Solowski, Team Leader<br />

“Many youth <strong>or</strong>ganizations are reactive,<br />

responding <strong>to</strong> youth who are al<strong>read</strong>y<br />

in trouble because <strong>of</strong> actions <strong>the</strong>y’ve<br />

taken. W<strong>or</strong>king at FOTC fuels me, and<br />

I continue <strong>to</strong> do well at it because it is<br />

proactive, meaning we match ment<strong>or</strong>s<br />

with youth in kindergarten bef<strong>or</strong>e maj<strong>or</strong><br />

trauma has occurred. I’m proud <strong>to</strong> have<br />

w<strong>or</strong>ked with 29 youth in my 13 years<br />

at FOTC.”<br />

Darren Linder, Friend<br />

“God has given me a gift <strong>to</strong> relate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

type <strong>of</strong> child we w<strong>or</strong>k with. Maybe it’s<br />

because in many ways my early childhood<br />

was just as turbulent as <strong>the</strong> youth I serve.<br />

When I pick up my boys each week...<br />

I’m picking up <strong>the</strong> lost little boy I once<br />

was <strong>to</strong>o.”<br />

Carlos Baca, Friend<br />

“It truly takes a whole village <strong>to</strong> raise a<br />

child. When a child comes in <strong>to</strong> <strong>Friends</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong> <strong>the</strong>y gain not only a<br />

ment<strong>or</strong>, but a whole village <strong>of</strong> people<br />

supp<strong>or</strong>ting <strong>the</strong>m.”<br />

Sally Marsh, Friend<br />

“I have been here 17 years simply<br />

because I just love w<strong>or</strong>king with kids,<br />

and I love being able <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong>m<br />

enc<strong>our</strong>agement, wisdom, and direction.”<br />

Steve Wick, Friend<br />

“I am committed <strong>to</strong> FOTC because it<br />

is <strong>the</strong> only <strong>or</strong>ganization that views deep,<br />

committed, long-term relationships<br />

as an intervention- and I have seen it<br />

impact every youth we have served.”<br />

Rachael Langtry, Team Manager<br />

“The first time I visited <strong>Friends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Children</strong>, I knew it was a very special<br />

place...<strong>the</strong> culture, <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong><br />

helping <strong>the</strong> children who are most<br />

in need, and showing up f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

consistently - no matter what. There<br />

are many great <strong>or</strong>ganizations, but none<br />

have a mission as compelling as <strong>Friends</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Children</strong>. It is <strong>the</strong> most inspiring<br />

w<strong>or</strong>k I have ever known.”<br />

Terri S<strong>or</strong>ensen, President<br />

“I <strong>or</strong>iginally wanted <strong>to</strong> be a teacher, but<br />

after my first few years with FOTC,<br />

I was so impressed by <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong><br />

influence I could have over individual<br />

youth, that I have stayed f<strong>or</strong> 19 years.<br />

FOTC satisfies my desire <strong>to</strong> teach, but<br />

at a closer, 1:1 level.”<br />

Chon Armsbury, Friend<br />

“I love FOTC because we get <strong>to</strong> make<br />

a lasting difference in <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong><br />

children who need us <strong>the</strong> most. This is<br />

truly a special and wonderful gift.”<br />

Joe Bergen, Program Direct<strong>or</strong><br />

“I always knew I wanted <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k<br />

with youth. I wanted <strong>to</strong> make a real<br />

difference in vulnerable children’s lives,<br />

and <strong>to</strong> be a proactive presence, ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than reactive.”<br />

Hilary Miller, Friend<br />

“I’ve served as a Friend f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> past 13 ½<br />

years because <strong>of</strong> my commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

process <strong>of</strong> changing children’s lives f<strong>or</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> better by sowing seeds <strong>of</strong> love,<br />

creating moments <strong>of</strong> joy, establishing<br />

space f<strong>or</strong> peace, exercising patience,<br />

enc<strong>our</strong>aging kindness and goodness,<br />

modeling faithfulness, cultivating<br />

gentleness, and witnessing <strong>the</strong><br />

empowering benefits <strong>of</strong> self-control.”<br />

ShaShuna Pack, Team Leader<br />

“I personally know <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> a<br />

community rallying around an<br />

individual. I know <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> a<br />

bright light <strong>of</strong> hope when it shines in<br />

a context where it did not exist bef<strong>or</strong>e.<br />

<strong>Friends</strong> gives me <strong>the</strong> opp<strong>or</strong>tunity <strong>to</strong> be<br />

that bright light, <strong>to</strong> continue shining<br />

lights <strong>of</strong> hope in <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> vulnerable<br />

children and in <strong>our</strong> community. My<br />

w<strong>or</strong>k here has made me a better<br />

version <strong>of</strong> myself.”<br />

Asia Wisecarver, Team Leader<br />

“When I first heard about FOTC, I<br />

could not believe a program existed<br />

that served youth so long-term and so<br />

comprehensively. I know <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k we<br />

do makes an impact. Nothing is m<strong>or</strong>e<br />

amazing than having a job where you<br />

can grow and change alongside youth.”<br />

Julie O’Donnell, Group Programs<br />

Manager<br />

“I was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> youth we serve<br />

growing up and I understand <strong>the</strong><br />

imp<strong>or</strong>tance <strong>of</strong> a ment<strong>or</strong>. “<br />

Hershell Tidwell, Friend<br />

“When you are a doing this job right<br />

you f<strong>or</strong>m powerful bonds with y<strong>our</strong><br />

youth and <strong>the</strong>ir families. Recently a<br />

7th-grader I have had since 1st grade<br />

<strong>to</strong>ld me his family’s planning <strong>to</strong> move<br />

<strong>to</strong> Fl<strong>or</strong>ida. He said not <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ry, though.<br />

He had convinced his mom <strong>to</strong> wait<br />

until be graduated high school, because<br />

he didn’t want <strong>to</strong> lose me. Bonds like<br />

that are <strong>to</strong>ugh <strong>to</strong> walk away from.”<br />

Arjon Nance, Friend<br />

“When I was in college, I decided I<br />

wanted <strong>to</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld a<br />

better place. FOTC is <strong>the</strong> perfect fit f<strong>or</strong><br />

making this dream become a reality.<br />

We focus on creating change by helping<br />

younger generations thrive.”<br />

Christen Segerstrom, Friend<br />

“W<strong>or</strong>king f<strong>or</strong> <strong>Friends</strong> is m<strong>or</strong>e than a<br />

job. It’s a calling with a great string<br />

attached <strong>to</strong> y<strong>our</strong> heart.”<br />

Renà Allen, Friend<br />
