Office of the Vice-President for Research<br />
Established in 1997, the Office of the Vice-President for Research<br />
(OVPR) is responsible for the development of a vibrant research<br />
environment that supports the production of world-class research<br />
through the formulation, communication and implementation<br />
of research policy and strategy at <strong>DCU</strong>. It consists of two units:<br />
Research Support Services and Invent.<br />
Research Support Services<br />
Research Support Services, in conjunction with <strong>DCU</strong> Invent,<br />
provide professional advice and support to staff and researchers<br />
at <strong>DCU</strong> with a range of activities associated with internal, external<br />
research funding and international collaborations.<br />
The Research Support Services office:<br />
• Represents research interests in decision-making on<br />
appropriate external bodies.<br />
• Develops quality care procedures for the <strong>University</strong>’s research<br />
effort.<br />
• Establishes, implements and evaluates research promotion<br />
initiatives.<br />
• Develops the physical and organisational research<br />
infrastructure at <strong>DCU</strong>.<br />
• Provides ongoing support and advice to staff on research<br />
funding opportunities.<br />
• Facilitates the operation of the <strong>University</strong> Research Committee,<br />
Research Advisory Panel and Research Ethics Committee.<br />
Services provided include:<br />
• Provision of information on internal and external funding<br />
opportunities.<br />
• Management of internal funding opportunities.<br />
• Liaison with all external funding agencies on behalf of researchers.<br />
• Support and advice with preparing grant applications.<br />
• Approval and submission of grant applications.<br />
• Advice and assistance with costing and pricing research proposals.<br />
• Preparing and/or supporting institutional proposals.<br />
• Facilitation of discussions between researchers and potential<br />
industrial partners.<br />
• Coordination of contract review and other legal requirements.<br />
• Institutional research contract approval.<br />
• Review and/or provision of Non-Disclosure Agreements,<br />
Material Transfer Agreements, Collaborative Research<br />
Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.<br />
• Establishing inter-institutional arrangements for the transfer of<br />
funds to research collaborators at other institutions.<br />
• Advice and support throughout the duration of a grant.<br />
• Provision of ethical approval process through the university<br />
Research Ethics Committee.<br />
• Provision of management information on research.<br />
• Provision of subsidised <strong>DCU</strong> Laboratory Notebooks.<br />
• Audit liaison.<br />
• Point of contact for external organisations seeking access to<br />
<strong>DCU</strong> Research.<br />

Graduate Studies Office<br />
The Graduate Studies Office, overseen by the Dean of<br />
Graduate Studies, provides support and advice on the strategic<br />
development of postgraduate research activities at <strong>DCU</strong>. It is also<br />
responsible for the administration of internal research funding,<br />
including postgraduate scholarships, and manages the Daniel<br />
O’Hare Research Scholarship, the <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Travel Grants and<br />
Accommodation Scholarships (open to research students only).<br />
The Graduate Studies Office also oversees the cross-campus<br />
Graduate Training Programme which provides both transferable<br />
and discipline-specific training opportunities for all <strong>DCU</strong><br />
postgraduate research students.<br />
The Graduate Studies Office is currently located in the Invent Building.<br />

<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Scholarships<br />
Details on scholarship opportunities can be obtained from<br />
the school or research centre in which you are interested in<br />
conducting your research. Information is also available from<br />
the Graduate Studies Office. Below are details for internal and<br />
external scholarship opportunities and funding.<br />
Internal Funding<br />
<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Accommodation Scholarships<br />
<strong>Dublin</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>University</strong>, through its <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Accommodation<br />
Scholarships, recognises outstanding achievement at<br />
undergraduate level by students due to commence the first<br />
year of their Masters or Ph.D. programme by full-time research<br />
at <strong>DCU</strong>. Up to FIVE scholarships may be awarded annually.<br />
Accommodation scholarships consist of rental expenses in the<br />
postgraduate residences for one year starting in September.<br />
The closing date for applications is 1 st July each year. Applicants must<br />
also submit an online application to postgraduate residences by 1 st July.<br />
<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Travel Grants<br />
Each postgraduate research student (full-time or part-time)<br />
can apply for one €500 travel grant in the period of his or her<br />
studentship. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout<br />

External funding<br />
Irish Research Councils<br />
Both the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and<br />
Technology (IRCSET) and the Irish Research Council for the<br />
Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) offer a number of<br />
graduate opportunities each year.<br />
