EXPERIENCE
LOUIS
KAROL
Louis Karol was established in 1952 in Cape Town and has offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Louis Karol offers the following professional services:
Architecture
Interior Design
Space Planning
Project Management
Outsourcing
Louis Karol is one of the largest and most eminent architectural firms in South Africa. Our portfolio of work comprises numerous corporate head
offices and commercial office buildings, waterfronts, residential apartments, hotels, retail facilities, convention and exhibition centres, educational
buildings and numerous refurbishment projects.
This award-winning practice is renowned for the quality of its designs, coupled with superb documentation, detailing and management skills. The
organisation has not only the necessary design expertise but also the staff and resources to tackle large complicated projects on a fast track basis.
The practice has worked with the majority of corporate and public clients in South Africa (as well as international corporates such as Exxon Mobil,
Chevron, Shell, Dunlop & Swiss Re), producing crafted, robust and striking architecture which responds to its environment, makes a statement, and
supports environmental and economic sustainability.
The commitment to quality and excellence in architecture (“giving more”) led to the development of a multi-disciplinary organisational structure, and
thus offers architectural, urban design, interior design and project management services.
The firm’s strengths are derived from its thorough understanding of commercial pragmatism, construction processes, demonstrable quality control,
and the ability to tackle the largest fast-track project, on time and on budget.
Louis Karol’s core strength is its insight and skilled understanding of the needs of national and multi-national corporates – particularly in the niche
sphere of headquarter buildings.
BbbEE
LOUIS
KAROL
In late 2003, Louis Karol became a BEE enterprise. But the concept of empowerment and affirmative action is nothing new at Louis Karol; having had
an aggressive upliftment program in place since as early as 1981, decades before it became statutory. It is against this backdrop that members of
staff from previously disadvantaged sectors as well as women (who are particularly under represented in the construction sector) have, over the last
twenty years, benefited from skills transfer and been appointed to professional and managerial positions within the firm.
Our shareholding and empowerment programs now constitute Louis Karol as the largest Black Empowered Architectural firm in South Africa. Louis
Karol is rated Level 3 in the coveted “Broad-Based BEE” category. As a result, all of our subdivisions (totalling 75 personnel), now conform to the most
demanding, equity-driven Black Economic Empowerment criteria.
5
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
LOUIS
KAROL
Louis Karol sees its role in the new South Africa in two ways:
Firstly, as architects, serving the needs of a democratic social order with buildings which contribute to social and economic advancement; and
secondly, as a non discriminatory, proactive, equal-opportunity employer committed to passing on the intellectual capital and knowledge that the
practice has built up over the last 60 years.
To focus this effort, a positive human resource development programme was established in 1981, geared specifically to the advancement of
personnel who had experienced a disadvantaged educational system. Over the years, this programme has become more sophisticated and formalized
and includes:
• an annual fellowship that Louis Karol sponsors for a student entering their third year at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
• Bursaries and fellowships that are available to staff to study architecture and project management at both the University of Cape Town,
Cape Peninsula University of Technology and the University of the Witwatersrand.
• one year mentorships and vacation employment for architectural and engineering students to gain hands-on experience in the practice.
• in-house training seminars, covering topics from CAD to project management.
Louis Karol has always promoted equal opportunity with the organization, regardless of gender, race or religion, and are proud of our affirmative
education programme over the last three decades, and most particularly of our students who have achieved such great results.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
LOUIS
KAROL
Louis Karol endeavours to play a role in the development and redevelopment of the diverse local communities that represent the South African
population and in recent years, Louis Karol has been involved in a variety of community-based projects.
Louis Karol are always enthusiastic to be involved in programmes and developments that enrich lives and improve environments, thus facilitating the
progress of empowerment and regeneration and as such, are always open to suggestions and queries.
The FOCUS Art Schools (Ibhabhathane Project) (www.ibhabhathane.com)
In the Western Cape, there are 10 Focus Schools of the Arts, administered by the Western Cape Education Department. These schools
provide special training for learners in Visual Arts, Design, Dance, Drama and Music. Unfortunately these schools do not have suitably
stocked libraries or facilities. Since 2009 Louis Karol has supplied books on art, design and architecture to the 10 schools. Louis Karol also
pays for the weekly bussing of one school’s learners to the Frank Joubert Art Centre for art lessons. These donations have been facilitated
by Ibhabhathane.
The Service Dining Rooms
LOUIS KAROL chose this charity as they are our near neighbours and they serve meals at 5 cents a meal.
“In July 2010, The Service Dining Rooms turned 75-years-old. Moreover, after all these years, they have witnessed the number of meals catered
increase from 200 per day to 1 200 per day (and the price of a meal still stands at 5 cents!). And three-quarters of a century later, they
are housed in the same, old-fashioned face brick building in 82 Canterbury Street in Cape Town. The profile of the “clientele” range from
destitute refugees, to local homeless people and various charities.”
The Farm and Garden National Trust (www.farmgardentrust.org)
“The Farm and Garden National Trust was established to raise funds to spread knowledge, expertise and resources to emerging
micro-farmers and gardeners nationally. There exists a tremendous need throughout South Africa for support, assistance and funding
for community-based projects in poor and needy communities, particularly self-help projects involving micro-farming (organic and
bio-dynamic gardening and small farming).”
Green Communities (www.greencommunities.co.za)
“Green Communities is a non-profit organisation promoting social upliftment through sustainable urban green living environments in
low income housing settlements, who promote and deliver these initiatives in a consultative, well planned and effective manner to help
alleviate social dilemmas.”
sustainability
LOUIS
KAROL
We are members of the Green Building Council of South Africa, and value its Green Star rating tool for its ability to focus the efforts of the design
and consultant teams, and provide clear benchmarks for performance, while emphasizing the importance of an integrative design process in which
ultimate energy and resource consumption are considered from the initial sketch design stage.
Louis Karol is committed to the principles of environmental sustainability – which is a natural development from our core expertise of economic
sustainability. Our firm is presently designing the City of Cape Town’s proposed new Smart Living Centre in Green Point (designed for five stars in terms
of the Greenstar rating) – as well as Liberty Life’s Umhlanga Regional Campus – which is eligible for four star rating. We believe that (particularly in
larger projects such as this) the entire consultant team (particularly mechanical and electrical) is critical in supporting architectural sustainability – and
to this end we are experienced in identifying suitably-qualified consultants.
Building obsolescence is an environmental catastrophe. Aside from conventional environmental priorities of energy and materials consumption – it
is our firm’s view (given that buildings [non-recyclable masonry and concrete] constitute the most polluting entities on Earth) that design for detail
permanence and creative re-usability will become our greatest contribution to architectural sustainability.
We do not regard sustainability as a new concept in architecture – rather it is a new emphasis on the first principles of good design, translating into
buildings that are responsive to their immediate environment as well as responsible to the wider one.
Our years of building nationally provides us with the knowledge and depth of experience to address the challenges of creating successful, green
buildings here – which remain present despite the broad recognition of the importance of sustainability – while drawing on the knowledge of our
UK-based green buildings consultant.
We see this as the new standard for developing buildings in South Africa, and expect to provide strong leadership in this process on all of our projects,
and to produce buildings that are resource-, energy-and cost-efficient by virtue of the most effective active systems and most appropriate passive
design elements.
Whilst we are best versed in the Australian-based Green-Star system applicable in South Africa, we are more than happy to facilitate for parallel ratings
interms of the USA’s LEED rating system – which we are excited to be getting to know.
