Gold Star Books was part of a multifaceted publishing empire usually identified under the umbrella
name of Charlton Publications. By the 1960’s Charlton had grown to be a major operation, with its own
printing presses and its own distributor, Capital Distributing, which is assumed to have distributed these
paperbacks. Charlton was owned by Edward [Gordon] Levy (1898-1990) and John Santangelo, Sr. It is
obvious, from comments below, that Ed Levy was directly involved in Gold Star Books, however, during
this same time period, Santangelo was part of a joint venture responsible for another paperback
imprint, see the separate Monarch Books index. It is not clear whether both men were involved with
both imprints or whether they were each involved with only one of them, in which case Gold Star Books
would have been principally Levy’s.
Charlton was notorious for issuing random and ephemeral magazines, comic books and one-shots, all
for the purpose of keeping their presses running. In an industry where many short-lived paperback
imprints may be described as “squirrelly,” Gold Star is undoubtedly the squirrelliest. Besides the sleazy
sex novels and sex-related nonfiction titles, which were also a mainstay of Monarch Books, Gold Star
also featured a long string of British Hank Janson mysteries, reprints of turn-of-the-century dime novel
westerns, and a short series of unauthorized Tarzan novels.
The sex books were almost all produced by the husband and wife writing team of Peter and Peg Scott.
Ed Levy was a major dime novel collector; the inclusion of the western reprints was probably a personal
indulgence. Dime novel authority Edward Le Blanc was credited as “Consulting Editor for the series” but
not as the editor of the specific volumes. The Hank Janson novels had a troubled history in Britain. The
copyright holders of these reprints were G. Gold and D. Warburton, who were the then current
publishers of the series in Britain; the copyright registrations gave Stephen D. Frances as the author of
all the volumes, which is definitely not the case. Frances created the series and wrote most of the early
volumes; the authorship of many of the later volumes is known and has been credited appropriately.
The middle-period books were subject to several prosecutions and, to my knowledge, they have not
been reliably attributed. The Tarzan series resulted in legal problems with Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
that may have speeded the imprint’s demise.
The 66 published books, numbered 11 to 76, were comprised of 17 reprints and 49 originals.
Although the dime novels were all reprints they had not been previously paired up in these
combinations, thus making the anthologies “original.” Besides the 17 Hank Janson novels, there were 5
other suspense novels. There was one new western novel to accompany the 13 reprint anthologies.
There were 5 Tarzan novels, which could be categorized as adventure and/or fantasy. There were 20
sex books: 10 non-fiction, 9 novels and one anthology. There were 5 other non-fiction books.
The first books were issued in November 1963 and they were issued in pairs through June 1964. From
July to September 1964 they were issued in sets of four. If #45 was an anomaly, then issuance probably
increased to six per month in October through December 1964. Output dropped to three per month for
the following three months and became more sporadic through the rest of the year. Publication
eventually ceased in December 1965, coincident with the cessation of Monarch Books. I have seen no
evidence that any Gold Star Books had multiple printings.
59 of the 66 covers are displayed in the Bookscans database. 58 covers are displayed as part of a web
site devoted to Charlton Publications maintained by Ramon Schenk, which can be seen here:
http://www.ramonschenk.nl/monarch/goldstar.htm. Between them, only # 62 has not been seen. Of
those seen, only 9 were signed or credited. The western anthologies reprint the covers of old dime
novel editions; to the best of my knowledge, those artists have not been attributed.
Note 1: The attribution of individual books to Peter or Peg Scott is based on the copyright
registrations; attributions from other sources disagree in some cases. It is possible that
most or all of their books are actually collaborations and that the copyrights were assigned
randomly to one or the other of them.
Note 2: I have ignored the numbering on the dime novel reprints, since it makes no sense. The
numbering begins with IL7-52, which is numbered 5, which is accurate as far as the
Buffalo Bill reprints are concerned. However, all the books in both series were internumbered
sequentially after that, ending with IL7-74, which is numbered 9, even
though it is the seventh Buffalo Bill and the thirteenth overall.
Note 3: Stories in the Denver Dan series appear under the bylines C. Little and “Noname,” as
well as anonymous.
Note 4: To avoid crowding and endless repetition, the citation is used in the list above
to indicate that a Buffalo Bill or Young Wild West story appears in a book with the same
title as the story itself.
Note 5: I have not attempted to indicate the prior publications of the dime novel westerns,
since they all have complex publishing histories, which have not been untangled in any
reference work I’ve seen. Two of the Buffalo Bill’s originally appeared under the same
titles, from Beadle & Adams, under Prentiss Ingraham’s byline and are so noted above.
