welcome
Dear Friends,
We invite you to join us March 7, 2009, for the Herd Bull and Foundation
Female Sale. The words - Foundation Female Sale - mean just that, as we are
selling our very best. We are offering a great set of outstanding show heifer
prospects and the quality is deeper than ever before.
There will be many great Foundation Brood Cow prospects, some of which will
develop into outstanding donors. We are also offering two proven donor cows
along with several really good young cows with some of the first calves by the
great ONeills Encore, that was the sensation of the 2008 sale.
The Bulls are stronger than ever and many great Herd Bull Prospects sell. We
have always bred Cattle for the Commercial Cattle Industry with Emphasis on
Structural Correctness, Sound Feet and Legs, Extra Volume with Muscle and
Thickness, Pounds with Carcass Quality without Excess Fat, Marbling in the meat
and not Fat on the Meat. Five of the most important Basic Traits are Fertility,
Longevity, Feet, Excellent Udders with Fleshing Ability. Many of our Bulls are still
breeding cows at nine to twelve years of age.
We are excited with the Bovigen GeneSTAR DNA markers: Quality Grade,
Tenderness, and Feed Efficiency. Our cattle are extremely high in these traits,
which gives you assurance to make more money on their progeny. Expedition,
the Feed Efficiency Sire, sired the Grand Champion Carcass Steer at the 2007
NJAS and we believe him to be one of the most complete sires in the Angus
breed, along with his maternal brother ONeills Lucky Boy and his tremendous son
ONeills Encore, the sensation of the 2008 sale being leased to Genex and selling
one-third interest for $75,000 for a $225,000 valuation.
We will not bring out all of the great herd bull prospects as we have covered
them extensively in the catalog. ONeills Earl Marshall is one of the most exciting
bulls we have raised. He traces directly to Earl Marshall on the sire line of his
pedigree and goes back to him many many times in his pedigree. Earl Marshall
is very unique combining: Calving Ease, Thick Muscle with Extra Volume, and
Marbling Score of I+.71 with great feet and legs.
His dam is an outstanding Expedition daughter that sold one-half interest for
$10,000 to Lonesome Dove in Minnesota and produced this fabulous bull.
ONeills Elite, full brother to ONeills Encore. If you didn’t get Encore then don’t
miss “Elite”. He has all of the outstanding traits of Encore with balanced traits and
tremendous volume, performance and muscle, with excellent feet. He is Super!
I think that the future for the Beef Cattle Business never looked brighter as cow
numbers are way down. NOW is the time to build. As for the Angus Breed, we
will emerge stronger than ever before with some dynamic changes taking place
in our breed. Angus cattle that are thick with muscle, volume, carcass quality with
fast gaining, and performance cattle that weigh and are structurally sound on
their feet and legs with eye appeal will come to the forefront of our breed.
We invite you to stop in and view our cattle at any time. If we can be of help in
any way, please give us a call. We look forward to seeing you at the sale. If you
are unable to attend and go through me in buying your cattle, we will guarantee
that the cattle will be satisfactory or you don’t own them.
Sincerely,
Master breeder Jim O’Neill has built a solid foundation of O’Neill genetics by staying true to his basic principles of breeding Angus cattle
over the course of the last half century. The enduring power of O’Neill Angus genetics continues to grow and expand throughout the beef
industry with each passing year and generation. At the 2009 National Western Stock Show in Denver, cattlemen from around the world
gathered to admire ONeills Earl Marshall featured in this sale as Lot 1 and ONeills Lucky Boy who was a feature of the 2008 O’Neill Sale.
This very special event marks an important opportunity to acquire timeless genetics from this one-of-a-kind Angus herd that represents
generation after generation of disciplined breeding and selection for seedstock with predictability and profitability based on the basics
of beef production. The terms muscle, volume, fleshing ability, soundness of feet and legs, fertility, balanced udders, performance and
carcass merit have always been a regular part of Jim O’Neill’s vocabulary and he has been breeding and selecting for these traits
long before any of them became catch phrases or industry fads. As new technologies continue to emerge, the linebred consistency of
O’Neill genetics has been re-identified through GeneSTAR ® DNA testing. The influence of O’Neill Angus genetics can be felt around the
world including dominant individuals that have left numerous descendants throughout the United States, Canada, Argentina, Denmark,
Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world. Never in history have O’Neill genetics enjoyed stronger demand than in 2009.
Tom Burke
The proven cow families that comprise the O’Neill Angus herd were formed with a very select original base of females which include
the foundation Delia and Eraline families that continue to endure the test of time. The influence of these tribes was enhanced with the
inclusion of outstanding females from other important families to bring in new elements including the Royal Ladys, the Blackcap Ladys
and the Rachels among others. These original ingredients have been skillfully molded and refined over time by the artistic hand of Jim
O’Neill, creating a linebred Angus herd with precision predictability in each of these basic traits that he has so carefully crafted.
The acquisition of the Pathfinder Sire known as 72E more than 30 years ago, would serve as a major cornerstone of the O’Neill program.
From the day that Happyvale Blackcap G 72E was purchased by Jim O’Neill, he has always believed him to be the best Angus bull of
his era. He would go on to sire the great Pathfinder Dam ONeills Eraline 42 who in turn produced the International sire and proven
Pathfinder Sire ONeills Renovator and his great full sisters. They came to represent the best of the O’Neill foundation carcass sire Premier
Independence KN. The genetics of each of these truly unique and outstanding individuals have been woven into the fabric of the O’Neill
herd over and over again through the course of the past several decades. Jim O’Neill’s extensive linebreeding program has truly become
an O’Neill trademark. Today, linebred O’Neill Angus seedstock represent the touchstone of Jim O’Neill’s breeding principles which apply to
the basic science of genetics blended with the creativity of a world class artist and the courage and determination of a fearless pioneer.
The endless array of famous O’Neill Angus bulls and females is impossible to completely document in the limited space of this sale
catalog. They have excelled by virtually every measurement available and in many ways that are difficult, if not impossible to measure.
They include performance and carcass leaders, showring champions and valued foundation seedstock from many Angus breeders.
Most importantly, they include cattle that make a profit by excelling in the basics, a goal that Jim O’Neill has followed for more than half
of a century. The overwhelming influence of O’Neill Angus genetics on the entire Angus breed and the beef industry as a whole is nearly
impossible to fully appreciate or comprehend. The birth of ONeills Expedition and his fantastic sons ONeills Encore and ONeills Elite, may
well prove to be among the greatest achievements of the O’Neill program to date as the industry looks forward to the next half of a
century. These two great individuals are destined to propel O’Neill Angus genetics to new heights and will no doubt lead the programs of
their new owners into echelons of Angus advancement that have yet to be seen.
It is a special pleasure and privilege for each of us at the American Angus Hall of Fame to have worked with Jim and Ardyce O’Neill over
the years. Their undying love and commitment to the Angus breed is proudly carried forward by their son J.C. O’Neill whose inherent
talent and masterful Angus husbandry have grown to be an integral component in the day to day operation of the O’Neill program. We
invite you to draw on the O’Neill family’s wisdom and insight into this herd, or feel free to contact us at the American Angus Hall of Fame,
if we can be of assistance in any way. We are here to serve.
This proven Pathfinder Sire has a unique and proven
combination of genetics that excel in fleshing ability, maternal
strength and carcass quality with added muscle and retail
product, consistently ranking among the top retail product
bulls of the entire Angus breed over the course of the last two
decades.
This sensational sire is the most prominent son of the famous
Pathfinder Dam ONeills Eraline 42 by the O’Neill foundation
Pathfinder Sire Premier Independence KN, and his full siblings
include the famous ONeills Lady Eraline and ONeills Eraline
155. This famous sire is represented in the tabulations of nearly
every individual in this sale.
ONeills Renovator was the sensation of the 1985 World
Angus Forum in Edmonton Alberta, Canada where he teamed
with his maternal sister’s son, ONeills Excalibur, as the Grand
Champion Pair of Bulls, launching him into the forefront of the
Angus world internationally.
ONeills Renovator combines tremendous thickness, volume,
fleshing ability and superior feet and legs and the ability to
transmit these traits to his progeny that has led to his semen
being used throughout the United States as well as being
exported into South America, Australia, New Zealand, Finland,
Denmark, Canada and other countries.
He is considered by many to be the bull that changed
Australian Angus genetics as a heavily used foundation
sire where his EPDs rank among the very best compared to
numerous other prominent sires.
The progeny of ONeills Renovator have dominated shows,
sales and performance tests on a global scale over the past
two decades.
His dominant breeding ability features the ability to transmit
superior carcass traits with the strength of his soundness,
structure and longevity, marking him as one of the great bulls
in breed history.
The sensational daughters of ONeills Renovator demonstrate
additional thickness, with extra volume, fleshing ability and
fertility and those traits have been consistently concentrated in
the O’Neill pedigrees with a disciplined linebreeding program.
The more he is concentrated has intensified these important
traits - Demonstrating His Genetic Purity!
ONeills Eraline 42 is an exceptional female who was born in 1977 is a fifth generation descendant of the foundation ONeills Eraline
cow, Eisa Erica Edith 51, an outstanding female that lived to be 19 years of age and produced 21 calves. This great female is widely
regarded as the all-time greatest daughter of the O’Neill foundation Pathfinder Sire Happyvale Blackcap G 72E, and her dam was an
outstanding producing daughter of the O’Neill foundation Pathfinder Sire Marshall Pride 514.
ONeills Eraline 42 was a fabulous female, being extremely easy-fleshing and heavy milking as a two-year-old and throughout the
course of her life. She was extremely long bodied, massively deep and had excellent feet and legs. Her unequaled production records
qualified her as a Pathfinder Dam with four progeny weaning ratios of 119 and two yearling ratios of 122.
Jim O’Neill has concentrated the elite genetics of this great female in his herd through a disciplined and concentrated linebreeding
program in an effort to include her in pedigrees as many times as possible in order to concentrate the great fleshing ability, fertility,
structure correctness and milk that she possessed. This intense linebreeding program has heightened the intensity of these important
traits while demonstrating genetic purity.
The many great progeny of this breed legend include ONeills Camelot, ONeills Renovator, ONeills Intent, ONeills Klondike, ONeills
Aberdeen, ONeills Eraline 61, ONeills Eraline 70, ONeills Lady Eraline, ONeills Eraline 100, ONeills Eraline 101, ONeills Eraline 155, the
grandam of ONeills Eraline 221, who is also the dam of many famous progeny including being the great grandam of ONeills Earl
Marshall. Other good daughters of “Eraline 42” are ONeills Eraline 180, SVF Forever Eraline, the great grandam of ONeills Elite selling
the o’neill alliance
O’Neill Angus has a very small Select Herd of 30
Angus females, that have been carefully selected over
the years for fertility, longivity, femininity, superior udders
with sound feet and legs and excellent disposition.
Real World Angus Genetics that have been selected for
Feed Efficiency with Fleshing Ability backed up with the
Bovigen DNA for Feed Efficiency, Quality Grade, and
Tenderness.
The O’Neill Alliance is composed of co-op herds that
are raising the calves from our donor embryos. We
assure you that they have good clean herds with good
management and vaccination programs. However,
with the calves coming from several different areas and
environments throughout the country and having been
handled very differently, there will be a tremendous
difference in the weaning and yearling weights of these
cattle. The sale is early in the season so the lighter bulls
and females will not be carrying as much flesh as some
of the others, but this does NOT affect their GENETIC
VALUE.
Birth weights on embryo calves fluctuate greatly from
the type of recipients and how they are fed from herd to
herd and it is no indication of what that animal will sire
or produce. Both EPD and calving ease direct are much
better indicators of calving ease than birth weight. Also
of Great Importance to Calving Ease is the Shape of the
Head and Smoothness of Shoulders. We have no calving
problems and recommend our bulls for calving ease that
are under a 4 pound birth EPD.
It is a pleasure to work with these progressive breeders, who have raised most of these calves:
