Boxcar People—The Story of Galesburg’s
Mexican Railroad Families
Witness a true story of the “American Dream” fulfilled with the broadcast
premiere of Boxcar People, Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m.
A new WTVP production written and produced by Will and Luz Schick,
Boxcar People tells the story of Mexican workers recruited in the early 1900s to
work the railroads in Galesburg, Illinois. At a time when their own country was
torn by a bloody civil war, American industry came to Mexico looking for workers
to replace the men gone off to fight in WWI. To a culture centered on family,
the railroads were particularly attractive to Mexicans displaced by chaos and war.
For the rail companies provided not just a job, but a place to raise a family. Each
worker was offered a home … a home in the form of a boxcar.
Using historic film, original testimonials and photos from the actual inhabitants
of the boxcar camps, Boxcar People goes beyond descriptions of horrible living
conditions, dangerous and back-breaking work, and harsh discrimination to tell
the tale of a proud people with strong traditions and deep faith who came to love
their adopted country and all the opportunities it offered.
Boxcar People is a truly inspiring story of immigrants rising up against all odds.
It sheds light upon a rarely heard history of Galesburg and its Mexican population
in context of national history. It also puts a local face on the national issues
of the generations of “immigrants” who have built this country and fought its
wars, but still struggle with acceptance
and civil rights.
Boxcar People was created by
WTVP Executive Producer William
Baker, and features original music by
Daniel Godsil, Associate in Applied
Music at Knox College. The program
will encore Saturday, March 16 at
4:00 p.m.
Notes from the President & CEO
As I write this piece there are still two more episodes of
Downton Abbey Season 3 to broadcast. By the time you
read it, you will know how the season ends: who’s in, who’s
out, what the cliffhanger is that carries us to Season 4.
If you already know, please don’t tell me.
As have others at WTVP, I have made it a point to watch each episode as it airs Sunday
nights on Masterpiece, even though I have an advance copy DVD on my desk. No
one has spilled the beans to me, but some staff members have had conversations with
Downton enthusiasts who have gone online or purchased recordings who then told
them how the season ended. You wouldn’t believe the crushed look on our Programming
VP’s face when someone revealed the ending. So, if you know…please don’t tell.
If you are new to Downton Abbey or just catching up, please note that WTVP will air
a 12-hour Downton marathon on Saturday, March 23 from noon to midnight.
And if you are completely taken by
British serial TV, I invite you to tune
into to Doc Martin, returning Mondays
at 9:00 p.m. starting March 18, and the
new season of Call the Midwife starting
March 31. The writing and the acting are
superb.
March, of course, is membership month
for public television. Chances are you
may have initially joined WTVP during
a March membership opportunity, so it
may be time to renew. Doing so on air
or online at www.wtvp.org is quick and
easy, and you also have an opportunity to
earn one of our special thank you gifts.
The main reason you contribute, though,
is programming. I can assure you that
even though the buzz has been about
Downton Abbey over the last several
months, public television continues to
produce some of the most outstanding
programming the medium has to offer. It
is only made possible by your continued
support. Thank you.
Chet Tomczyk, President & CEO
Protect Your Memory with Dr. Neal Barnard
Nothing is more important than health, family and loved ones. Connections with
other people, entire relationships and everything loved ones have ever known
could be wiped out if someone is at risk for memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer’s
disease. But with groundbreaking research, Dr. Neal Barnard proves there is much
that can be done to protect against memory loss and offers new ways to offset the
risk. Find out how on Protect Your Memory with Dr. Neal Barnard, premiering
Monday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m.
In this new special, Dr. Barnard dives into three simple steps that can be taken to
derail the degenerative processes that could in turn derail lives and memories. He
also warns against potential threats to the brain, including medications, drug interactions,
sleep deprivation and physical conditions that can put memory at risk.
During the broadcast, viewers will also hear more about Dr. Barnard’s visit to
Peoria this May, when he will speak at ICC.
The program will also encore Saturday, March 9
at 10:30 a.m., and Sunday, March 10 at 3:00 p.m.
Jerry Lewis: Live from Las Vegas
Taped in the Showroom at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in
November 2012, this new special presents Jerry Lewis live on stage, telling stories
of his eight-decade career through narrative and musical performances, with video
montages from his television and film appearances – including rare, never-beforeseen
clips from his personal and private vaults. Scheduled as a tribute to his 87th
birthday in March, An Evening with Jerry Lewis: Live from Las Vegas airs
Monday, March 4 at 8:30 p.m. on WTVP.
During the course of the program, Lewis tells jokes and reminisces about his life,
from his earliest days working with his father, a vaudeville entertainer, to his first
solo gig “Record Act,” in which he exaggeratedly mimed the lyrics to songs on a
phonograph, to the now-famous appearance by Dean Martin, his long-time comedy
partner whom he hadn’t seen for 20 years, on Jerry Lewis’ annual Muscular
Dystrophy telethon in 1976.
Highlights include more never-before-seen clips from his movies, including Ladies
Man and The Nutty Professor, as well as Jerry’s other solo projects and home movies.
A special montage follows, with Jerry providing narration for “bloopers and
out-takes” from some of his most famous movies, several with Martin.
harmonies of Herman’s Hermits
(“Can’t You Feel My Heartbeat”),
Sonny & Cher (“I Got You Babe”)
Way Back to You”), it then continues
through the folk-rock sounds of the
sixties including the million-selling
“Mr. Tambourine Man” by the Byrds,
“Eve of Destruction,” a #1 hit by Barry
McGuire, the Pete Seeger-penned
“If I Had a Hammer” sung by Trini
Endowment Contributors
WTVP extends a gracious thank you to all who contributed to the Endowment Fund
throughout 2012 – once again helping us raise enough to take advantage of a substantial
matching donation from an anonymous family donor.
The endowment fund is not for daily programming or operational expenses, but
a separate fund dedicated to building financial stability for the station’s long-term
survival. As a safety net for unforeseeable expenses or events, the Endowment Fund is
an investment in the future of public television for Central Illinois.
Virtual Golf, Real Fun
The inaugural WTVP Virtual Golf Outing was a huge success! Our intrepid golfers
did have to brave the cold on February 1—but only until they got in the door at
Quail Meadows Indoor Golf Center. There they were met with a warm welcome,
followed by a chance to play the back nine at Pebble Beach, courtesy of some top-line
simulators. A good time was had by all, and money was raised to support your public
television station.
The success of the event was made possible by major sponsorship from OSF Saint
Francis Medical Center. WTVP extends special thanks to them for embracing this
first-time event, and to their representative, Tom Hammerton, for his leadership.
We also thank our other sponsors, our volunteers, and all our golfers for making it a
fun day.
Read on for more information.
Volunteers—The WTVP Auction needs you!
Auction In-Kind Donors Are Key
WTVP relies on individuals and area
businesses to be in-kind donors to our annual
auction. In-kind donors help defray
the cost of this long-standing community
fundraising event by donating products
and/or services that WTVP would otherwise
have to purchase. In-Kind donors
receive on-air promotion and contributions
are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
Here is a list of the some of the items and
services that WTVP will needs to make
this year’s auction a great success:
