BREAKING OPEN THE WORD
SUGGESTED TEXT FOR FAITH SHARING:
TODAY’S GOSPEL
THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
WEEK OF MAY 26TH, 2013
STEP ONE: Listen to the Word
As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike
you What in this reading touches your heart What
lingers in your memory
THEME: God is love
STEP TWO: Look into Your Life
QUESTION FOR CHILDREN: God fills us with love. How, this
week, will you show your family - your mom, dad, brothers,
sisters, grandparents, cousins - that you love them
as God loves them
QUESTION FOR YOUTH: When Jesus left the world, He
sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. Have you ever given
something important to someone else as a sign of your
love for them Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit
as a similar gift to you
QUESTION FOR ADULTS: Today we celebrate the relationship
of love among the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit. In what similar community of love do you live
BISHOP SERRATELLI and every parish in the Paterson
Diocese will celebrate those who have been examples of
what it means to live the life of Jesus. These individuals
will be honored with the Vivere Christus award on
Sunday, June 2nd at 4:00pm at St. Philip's in
Clifton. All are invited to attend the ceremony.
This year, St. Mary's has nominated Andrea Henry for the
Vivere Christus award. Andrea serves the parish and the
community through several ministries. She is our director
of Evangelization, and is attending the three year
certificate in Evangelization program at St. Paul Inside
the Walls. Andrea also is the Director of our RCIA
program.
She has been a Catechist for our junior high students,
and is a Children’s Liturgy of the Word leader. Andrea is
also a Lector and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.
Most of all, Andrea exemplifies what it means to live out
the Gospel message. She is generous with her time and
talent, and always ready and willing to help others. She
is a kind, compassionate person who is dedicated to
making others feel welcome in our parish family. Andrea
is dedicated to the Eucharist and to the people of God.
It is with excitement and pride that we at St. Mary’s
Parish nominate Andrea Henry for the Vivere Christus
Medal.
THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) is
accepting enrollment for 2013-14 session. The session
starts in October and candidates receive the sacraments
at the Easter Vigil in April. The Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults is meant for those who:
- have never been baptized but are curious about Christ
and all He taught;
- have been baptized in other Christian traditions, but
have an interest in Catholics and the Catholic Church;
- are already baptized Catholic but have never received
Eucharist and/or Confirmation.
These are the people the Rite of Christian Initiation seeks
to reach and to serve. Perhaps you know someone who
may have questions about the faith, the process of RCIA,
or a desire to be received into the Church. Think about it,
pray about it, offer an invitation.
Anyone interested is asked to contact Andrea Henry,
RCIA Coordinator at aphenryrcia@gmail.com or
call 973-714-6844.
THE STORY OF MEMORIAL DAY
The observance of a special day of memorial in the
United States arose from the ashes of the Civil War.
Even before the ending of armed conflict, times for
decorating soldiers' graves and for remembering
them in prayer had been set aside by some local
communities. In 1866, a year after the War, communities
like Waterloo, New York and Columbus, Mississippi, had
set aside a complete day for such observance.
In 1868, Senator John Alexander Logan of Illinois, a
former General in the Union Army, and a co-founder and
president of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a
general order to G.A.R. members for observance of a
special Decoration Day or Memorial Day in all the States
that year. The custom has been with us ever since.
It was only following World War I with the support of
the American Legion and its Poppy Day observance
that Memorial Day came to honor all U.S. citizens who
had died in warfare. Only gradually was the
observance extended to pay homage to all deceased
relatives and friends, both military and civilian. In 1971,
Congress changed the official Memorial Day
celebration to the last Monday in May.
FREEDOM IS NOT FREE
by Major Kelly Strong
I watched the flag pass by one day,
it fluttered in the breeze,
A young man in uniform saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
looked at him in uniform - so young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert,
he'd stand out in the crowd.
I thought how many men like him had fallen through the years
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears
How many pilots' planes shot down
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves
No, freedom is not free.
I heard the sound of taps one night, when everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play and felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times that "taps" had meant "Amen"
When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children, of mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands, with interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea,
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No freedom is not free.
