Roberto Giraldo reports on the remarkable<br />
meetings in India earlier this year<br />
Roberto Giraldo MD is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Clinical Tropical<br />
Medicine, currently working in the laboratory <strong>of</strong> Clinical Immunology in the<br />
New York Hospital Cornell Medical Centre. In March he became President <strong>of</strong><br />
the 700-strong international Group for the Scientific Reappraisal <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>.<br />
Dr Giraldo has published papers and articles on the problems with ‘<strong>HIV</strong><br />
testing’, ‘mother-to-child transmission’ and breastfeeding, and the toxicity <strong>of</strong><br />
‘anti-hiv’ medications. His book <strong>AIDS</strong> and Stressors concisely explore s<br />
s e v e re immunodeficiency as a toxic-nutritional syndrome caused by the<br />
alarming increment <strong>of</strong> immunological stressor agents.<br />

BACKGROUND<br />
For several years Dr. Shantilal Kothari,<br />
Nutritionist and President <strong>of</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong><br />
Nutrition Improvement (ANI) in Nagpur, has<br />
been questioning the <strong>of</strong>ficial Indian national<br />
<strong>AIDS</strong> program (NACO). He has sent lots <strong>of</strong><br />
letters with scientific documents from the <strong>AIDS</strong><br />
dissident re s e a rchers, to the health authorities<br />
<strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> Maharashtra, to the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />
Health <strong>of</strong> India in New Delhi, and to WHO and<br />
UN<strong>AIDS</strong> in Geneva. He has also written dissident<br />
articles in the main newspapers <strong>of</strong> India. A<br />
year ago he created a Club with people<br />
diagnosed as "<strong>HIV</strong> positive" which currently has<br />
over 200 members.<br />
Last year Dr. Kothari performed a peaceful<br />
hunger strike, to try to force the Government <strong>of</strong><br />
India to meet with us. On August 10th, 1999 the<br />
Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health, Government <strong>of</strong> India finally<br />
asked Dr. Kothari to organise an Intern a t i o n a l<br />
C o n f e rence with experts and scientists fro m<br />
both sides <strong>of</strong> the <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> debate.<br />
ORGANISATION<br />
The conference was organised by Dr. Kothari<br />
and Dr. K.C. Jain (Conference Coordinator), in<br />
Co-operation with the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health and<br />
Family Welfare <strong>of</strong> the Government <strong>of</strong> India and<br />
the<br />
Directorate <strong>of</strong> Health and Family Welfare <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Government <strong>of</strong> Maharashtra.<br />
Rajendra Khatry, journalist <strong>of</strong> the Indian Express<br />
was responsible for promoting the confere n c e<br />
in the media.<br />
A group <strong>of</strong> people diagnosed with <strong>AIDS</strong> or<br />
labelled "<strong>HIV</strong>-positive" were working as volunteers<br />
to the conference.<br />
The walls <strong>of</strong> the hall where the conference took<br />
place, were artistically decorated with copies <strong>of</strong><br />
articles from Peter Duesberg, David Rasnick,<br />
G o rdon Stewart, John Lawritsen, Eleni<br />
Papadopulos-Eleopulos, Etienne de Harven,<br />
Neville Hodgkinson, Joan Shenton, Huw<br />
Christie, Christine Maggiore, Michael<br />
Baumgartner, Michael Ellner, Paul Philpott, and<br />
Roberto Giraldo.<br />
During the lunch and c<strong>of</strong>fee breaks all attendees<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Conference had the opportunity <strong>of</strong><br />
testing the exquisite Indian vegetarian cuisine.<br />
