Today, on September 8, 2012,
we are honoring this distinguished young man,
Professor Bob Buchanan, from Berkeley, California
(that was also the home of Melvin Calvin, Andy
Benson and Dan Arnon: “carbon and light reaction”
folks). And, importantly, we are honoring him in
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois (that was the home of
Robert Emerson and Eugene Rabinowitch, the “light
reaction” folks) with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement
Award of the Rebeiz Foundation, and that too at the
beautiful home of Carole and Tino Rebeiz.

I will show you some slides to celebrate
this wonderful
event for Bob Buchanan
I will not present here his curriculum
vitae or provide you with all his exciting
scientific discoveries; both files are
available in pdf format with Govindjee
as well as with Tino Rebeiz. I will just
say a few things.

Research in Bob’s Laboratory focuses on an important
regulatory protein called thioredoxin.
He is THE authority on this protein in plants...a
major discoverer of everything about it—Please ask
him and see his eyes shine!

Who were Bob’s mentors
[1] Jesse C. Rabinowitz (1925—2003; a distinguished
biochemist), world authority on basic biology of folic
acid and ferredoxin; he was a true devotee of culture
science, art, music, literature; above all, he was a great
photographer
[2] Daniel I. Arnon (1910-1994; a distinguished plant
biochemist), discoverer of photoposphorylation and
complete photosynthesis in chloroplasts; and one of
the most colorful personalities in the field of
photosynthesis.

overexpressing thioredoxin
Studies together with many including Ghasem Hosseini Salekdeh and
his collaborators (in Iran) have uncovered a role for thioredoxin in grain
iimproving, including enabling wheat to survive drought conditions.

Dear Dr. Govindjee,
Thank you for your mail. Of course I want to
honor Bob. He was in Stockholm in 1985 on a
Nobel Conference on “Thioredoxin and
Glutaredoxin Systems” Södergarn, outside
Stockholm and I have one slide from that
occasion.[Please show it.] Actually Bob is visible
in the lecture hall in the back. The happy
gentleman with the cigar is the late Prof.

Bob has quite a few "Swiss connections" as can be
seen from the attached picture taken at a "Berkeley
reunion" near Zurich in 2008. The people at the table
are, from left to right: Hans Bosshardt, Bob, Ursula
Bosshard, Melinda,
Peter & Johanna Schürmann, Peter & Ruth Kalberer.
(Reinhard Bachofen was unfortunately missing that
day.) Bob and Melinda are still in good contact with
these
"old friends" from Switzerland.

Dear Govindjee
Attached is a ppt with some pictures of me with Bob’s
group, I think in 1983, in the Hey-Day of Fructose-2-6-
bisphosphate research… plus a compilation of Bob, me
and Csaba Cseke with a little cartoon that Bob and I
prepared for a TIBS publication back in 1984. I think he
will enjoy the honey pot slide. He knew I was putting
something like this together, just for the sake of old times,
but with his impish sense of humour, I am sure he'll
really enjoy its release at such an august occasion.

evidently one of the 20th century´s leading biochemists
in photosynthesis. Your message soon recaptured old
and wonderful times -my postdoc at the University of
California Berkeley. Although I had a good training in
protein purification and enzymology when I moved to
Berkeley, Bob was extremely generous to accept me in his
lab because I was a novice in the photosynthesis field.
Working with him, I became acquainted with a trained,
intelligent and motivated scientist. However, the most
important feature was his capacity to withstand
disappointments in work.”
