In this session an OISE graduate, teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a Public district school board,<br />

will share her experience as a beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g teacher. She will also speak about<br />

her employment and <strong>in</strong>duction process. The discussion will focus on<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g, challenges and support <strong>in</strong> the first year of teach<strong>in</strong>g. There will be<br />

an opportunity to ask questions.<br />

E2 First Year Teachers Talk (Elementary Catholic)<br />

In this session, an OISE graduate, teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a Catholic district school<br />

E3 Children’s Aid Society: Duty to Report (Session 2 only)<br />

This presentation will focus on the different types of abuse—signs and<br />

symptoms, what to expect when a call is made to the agency, roles and<br />

responsibilities and the teacher's "duty to report". Examples of cases that<br />

are received from the Board of <strong>Education</strong> and outcomes will be shared.<br />

E4 Teachers and Investigations: “Be Wary, Be Wise” (Session 2 only)<br />

Joe Pece, OECTA, Room 5-240<br />

This presentation will address the various compla<strong>in</strong>ts made aga<strong>in</strong>st teachers<br />

by parents, the Children's Aid Society, police and the <strong>Ontario</strong> College of<br />

Teachers. Emphasis will be on prevention and early assistance from the<br />

association <strong>in</strong> order to m<strong>in</strong>imize the impact on teachers.<br />

E5 Mentorship <strong>Program</strong> <strong>for</strong> New Teachers<br />

Jim Strachan, TDSB, Room 5-260<br />

In this <strong>in</strong>teractive session, specific structures and strategies <strong>for</strong> the support of<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g teachers at both the board and school level will be shared. Specific<br />

TDSB job-embedded supports that will be highlighted <strong>in</strong>clude: Classroom<br />

Exchange Project, Blended Models of Site-Based Mentor<strong>in</strong>g, Family of Schools<br />

Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Teacher Coaches and Onl<strong>in</strong>e Mentor<strong>in</strong>g & Support. Participants will<br />

leave with a resource guide <strong>for</strong> Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Teachers & Mentors and practical<br />

ideas to use as they beg<strong>in</strong> their teach<strong>in</strong>g career.<br />

E6 Learn<strong>in</strong>g Through the Arts Organization<br />

In this session different ways of provid<strong>in</strong>g a mean<strong>in</strong>gful learn<strong>in</strong>g environment<br />

<strong>for</strong> all students will be looked at. Backward plann<strong>in</strong>g and ways to "hook" the<br />

learner will also be addressed. This workshop will provide an overview of the<br />

program as well as some hands-on applications to see how different learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

styles can be reached through the arts.<br />

E7 Professional Learn<strong>in</strong>g, Cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g the Journey: Additional<br />

Qualifications<br />

Professional Learn<strong>in</strong>g is an expectation of <strong>Ontario</strong>'s certified teachers. There<br />

are many avenues that teachers can pursue. Additional Qualification courses<br />

are an essential part of <strong>Ontario</strong>'s program <strong>for</strong> teachers' professional learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and upgrad<strong>in</strong>g. This session will provide an overview of professional learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

opportunities, the regulatory requirements of the Additional Qualification<br />

program and highlight the excellent and varied AQ offer<strong>in</strong>gs available at OISE.<br />

E8 Teacher Appraisal Process<br />

“The New Teacher Induction <strong>Program</strong> (NTIP) has been designed to support the<br />

growth and professional development of new teachers. It is the second step <strong>in</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uum of professional development <strong>for</strong> teachers to support effective<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g and assessment practices, build<strong>in</strong>g on and complement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the first step: pre-service education.” Educate yourself. Know your rights,<br />

roles and responsibilities dur<strong>in</strong>g this process. This workshop will assist you <strong>in</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>g prepared <strong>for</strong> this program. Be <strong>in</strong> the know!<br />

E9 Understand<strong>in</strong>g your Collective Agreement<br />

This workshop provides an overview of the component parts of typical<br />

Collective Agreements that govern teachers employed <strong>in</strong> Boards throughout<br />

the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce of <strong>Ontario</strong> with specific references to GTA boards. The<br />

workshop will help prospective teachers identify key Collective<br />

Agreement factors to consider when ponder<strong>in</strong>g their employment choices and<br />

will aim to demonstrate why every teacher should strive to thoroughly<br />

understand their Collective Agreement once they are employed.<br />

E10 Community Interventions <strong>for</strong> At-Risk Students: Pathways to <strong>Education</strong><br />

How do you respond to high drop out rates Youth alienation<br />

Disempowerment The answer: Pathways to <strong>Education</strong>. Through community<br />

based mentor<strong>in</strong>g and student support, Pathways to <strong>Education</strong> has helped to<br />

turn around the dropout rate, improve credit accumulation and school<br />

attendance, and offers students <strong>in</strong> “Priority Communities” <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong> and<br />

Quebec a real chance at success.<br />

E11 Occasional Teach<strong>in</strong>g: A Revolv<strong>in</strong>g Door of Possibilities<br />

The presentation will outl<strong>in</strong>e the types of occasional teach<strong>in</strong>g, daily and longterms,<br />

and how to tailor the benefits of each to your career aspirations. It<br />

will also show the data of hir<strong>in</strong>g patterns with<strong>in</strong> the TDSB elementary panel<br />

over the past few years and the paths and prospects to jobs you should be<br />

aware of.<br />

E12 Conflictual Conversations: Teachers and Adm<strong>in</strong>istrators<br />

All of us can f<strong>in</strong>d hold<strong>in</strong>g conversations about difficult issues or concerns<br />

uncom<strong>for</strong>table and sometimes overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g. It can also be difficult to deliver<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g news. These conversations can be particularly complex <strong>in</strong> a<br />

professional sett<strong>in</strong>g. Come to this workshop to learn about effective ways to<br />

structure and articulate a clear message <strong>in</strong> situations that may be challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or conflictual.<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> (ETFO), the <strong>Ontario</strong> English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA),<br />

and the <strong>Ontario</strong> Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF). On enter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the teach<strong>in</strong>g profession you will become a member of one of these affiliates.<br />

people teach<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> public elementary schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong>. Those<br />

with primary teach<strong>in</strong>g responsibilities <strong>in</strong> an elementary<br />

public school are statutory members of this affiliate.<br />

This session will describe the benefits and responsibilities of belong<strong>in</strong>g to The<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> English Catholic Teachers’ Association. OECTA represents 36,000 men<br />

and women who teach all grades <strong>in</strong> the publicly funded English Roman<br />

Catholic schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong>. OECTA is affiliated with the <strong>Ontario</strong> Teachers’<br />

Federation, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and <strong>Education</strong> International.<br />

This session will deal with the issues of teachers cross<strong>in</strong>g the boundary <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>in</strong>appropriate relationships with students. Teachers and teacher candidates<br />

can run significant risks <strong>for</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>ary action from boards, courts and the<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> College of Teachers due to "boundary" violations. This workshop<br />

outl<strong>in</strong>es where boundary issues occur, what happens when boundaries are<br />

violated and outl<strong>in</strong>es the standards to which teachers are held <strong>in</strong> an ef<strong>for</strong>t to<br />

help teachers prevent such violations from occurr<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

S6 “School Staff<strong>in</strong>g: The Mysteries Revealed!”<br />

Christos Aslanidis, OSSTF, Room 5-230<br />

New teachers are often moved from school to school <strong>in</strong> the first years of their<br />

careers, as the result of, it seems, an arbitrary and secretive process. This<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ar will discuss the factors that impact on the annual staff<strong>in</strong>g of schools<br />

and the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples that govern the process. Federation supports and the<br />

options available to the teacher will also be discussed. Participants will be<br />

expected to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> simulation activities. The sem<strong>in</strong>ar will <strong>in</strong>clude the<br />

opportunity <strong>for</strong> questions on school staff<strong>in</strong>g or any other federation matter.<br />

some discussion of the current issues fac<strong>in</strong>g educators and their connection<br />

S11 Teen Suicide and Mental Health Issues<br />

This session will look at the frequency of suicide, triggers, warn<strong>in</strong>g signs and<br />

what to do if worried about a student. We will also look at various mental<br />

health diagnoses that can be associated with suicide, or that can impact a<br />

youth's academic, social and behavioural per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

S12 Students At Risk: Advocacy/Alternative <strong>Program</strong>s<br />

In this session, participants will be given a description of the programs,<br />

services and resources available to students <strong>in</strong> the Toronto District School<br />

Board. The TDSB provides a wide range of alternative programs and schools<br />

<strong>for</strong> students who may have difficulty <strong>in</strong> the traditional classroom sett<strong>in</strong>g. In<br />

addition there are a large number of professional support staff who are<br />

available to lend assistance to students, families and teachers who need help<br />

<strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g problems that are compromis<strong>in</strong>g academic per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

“The New Teacher Induction <strong>Program</strong> (NTIP) has been designed to support the<br />

growth and professional development of new teachers. It is the second step<br />

<strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uum of professional development <strong>for</strong> teachers to support effective<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g and assessment practices, build<strong>in</strong>g on and complement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the first step: pre-service education.” Educate yourself. Know your rights,<br />

roles and responsibilities dur<strong>in</strong>g this process. This workshop will assist you <strong>in</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>g prepared <strong>for</strong> this program. Be <strong>in</strong> the know!<br />

S14 Understand<strong>in</strong>g your Contract: Benefits and Parental Leave<br />

Teachers have rights too - either statutory: established under the law or<br />

contractual: negotiated with the employer. While teacher contracts vary<br />

from school board to school board, there are essential common elements. In<br />

this session we will look at some negotiated contractual rights such as salary<br />

placement (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g work related experience), allowances, benefits, teacher<br />

workload, transfer procedures and leaves of absence (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the effect on<br />

one’s pension) . We will also discuss some of the statutory rights which are a<br />

teacher’s entitlement.<br />

S15 Foster<strong>in</strong>g Positive Relationships With Parents<br />

This session will provide practical tips that will enable new teachers to<br />

engender positive relationships with parents’ right from day one. Part of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>-service will be dedicated to successfully navigat<strong>in</strong>g your first set of parent<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews. Concrete strategies will be offered <strong>for</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with bully<strong>in</strong>g and/<br />

or harass<strong>in</strong>g behaviour by parents - <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g "parental rage."<br />

Disempowerment The answer: Pathways to <strong>Education</strong>. Through community<br />

based mentor<strong>in</strong>g and student support, Pathways to <strong>Education</strong> has helped to<br />

turn around the dropout rate, improve credit accumulation and school<br />

attendance, and offers students <strong>in</strong> “Priority Communities” <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong> and<br />

Quebec a real chance at success.<br />

S17 Conflictual Conversations: Teachers and Adm<strong>in</strong>istrators<br />

All of us can f<strong>in</strong>d hold<strong>in</strong>g conversations about difficult issues or concerns<br />

uncom<strong>for</strong>table and sometimes overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g. It can also be difficult to<br />

deliver disappo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g news. These conversations can be particularly complex<br />

<strong>in</strong> a professional sett<strong>in</strong>g. Come to this workshop to learn about effective ways<br />

to structure and articulate a clear message <strong>in</strong> situations that may be<br />

challeng<strong>in</strong>g or conflictual.<br />

Catholic schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong>. OECTA is affiliated with the <strong>Ontario</strong> Teachers’<br />

Federation, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and <strong>Education</strong> International.<br />

Teachers <strong>in</strong> elementary and secondary Catholic schools are members of this<br />

affiliates.<br />
