Submissions: Drop off at Village Hall, mail to above address, or e-mail to mbitton@whpd.org. - VILLAGE HALL BUSINESS HOURS - Monday through Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Next Branch Pick-Up in October Residents are reminded that there will be no branch pick-ups in July, August or September. The Winthrop Harbor Branch Pick-Up Program, which is intended for residents who prune their own trees, was revised for 2007. As tree maintenance is generally performed in early Spring or late Autumn, the pickup service occurs on Mondays in April & October only. Please mark your calendars for the next dates that the Public Works Dept. will be picking up pruned branches: October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. On these dates the Public Works Dept. will only be collecting trimmed branches. Branches that are left from entire tree removals will not be picked up. In addition, Public Works will not pick up lawn refuse, leaves, grass clippings, tree trunks and/or logs, etceteras. To facilitate timely pickups, the length of the limbs and branches should be left as long as possible. Whole limbs chip up much better than small, cut up pieces. Please spread out evenly along the parkway, with cut ends of branches and limbs facing the street. Tangled piles of limbs or branches placed haphazardly will not be picked up. If a tree trimming service or lawn service takes down, trims or prunes your tree, please have the service company provide removal of the (Continued on page 5) Village Meetings Open to the Public Mayor Joe Leech, Jr., the Board of Trustees and Village staff encourage residents to attend the Village Board and committee meetings, held monthly at Village Hall or the Schlader Memorial Recreation Center. We value the input that our residents provide, and are committed to addressing all questions and concerns in a constructive, positive manner. For more information about any of the services listed below, please call Jan Suthard, Benton Township Supervisor, at 847-746-2100. SENIOR SPELLING BEE Senior Spelling Bee will be held July 18th at the Shiloh Senior Center in Zion. If interested in participating, please call to sign up. PACE DIAL-A-RIDE SERVICE Pace Dial-A-Ride bus service is available for Benton Township residents. Service hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30am until 4pm. This service will take you anywhere in Benton, Newport and Zion Townships, as well as the Villages of Beach Park, Wadsworth, Winthrop Harbor, Gurnee and Zion. Cost is $1.60 one-way for adults; 80 cents for seniors and children ages 7-11. To schedule a ride, call 800-201- 6446 at least one day in advance. REDUCED RTA FARES Reduced fares for RTA Metra trains and buses are available to seniors 65 and older. A photo ID is required. Please call to schedule an appointment. PRESCRIPTION DRUG CARDS For those without prescription insurance, Prescription Discount Cards are available at the township office. Average savings at a participating retail pharmacy is 20% and the card may be used over and over. Income or age is not a factor in obtaining the discount card. FREE EMERGENCY CELL PHONES For seniors and disabled citizens without a cell phone, the township office has free emergency cell phones available. The phones are programmed for calling 911 only. Residents who have an old cell phone to donate, please bring them to the Township office. HALF FARE TAXI PROGRAMS Seniors 65 and older, and disabled residents of any age, may apply for half-fare rates on taxi rides. (Max. $3) Please apply at the Township office. MISC. American Legion Post 1943 On behalf of the Winthrop Harbor Samuel Schiera American Legion Post 1943, we wish to thank the citizens of Winthrop Harbor, the Village of Winthrop Harbor, the businesses, and all others who supported our successful Poppy Day fundraiser with their generous donations. Thanks to the Village officials who allowed us the use of the 9th Street & Sheridan Rd. intersection for our fund raiser. A special thanks goes to Officer Carl Simmons for providing safety equipment, and community service workers to help our cause. We were honored by having two sons of Samuel Schiera. Loren, the Post Chaplin and Service Officer worked at the corner of 9th St. and Sheridan Rd. Tom and his family, who had come down to say hello to his brother, took a can of poppies and worked the location where his father, Sam, had spent so many Poppy Days, outside the Harbor Foodliner. One of the most unselfish donations, as told by one of the vets working at 9th & Sheridan, came when a young boy on a bicycle stopped, waved the vet to the curb, and dropped his lunch money into the collection can. When the vet tried to return the money, the young fellow said “I watch the news and have seen what our troops are going through, thanks.” He rode off as quickly as he could without even taking a poppy. Thanks to all who supported us. Patriotism still lives in our community! Our American Legion Post 1943 meetings are held at the Schlader Building on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 pm. All visitors are invited to join us. AARP Chapter 871 The Winthrop Harbor AARP Chapter meets at 1pm on the third Tuesday each month. Meetings are held at the Community Center on 7th Street. The July 17th meeting will be our summer luncheon at the Community Center at 12 noon. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass and their own cold beverage and eating utensils.
