ComEd Rate Relief and Assistance Initiative
Helping Customers Transition to New Rates
ComEd is reminding customers to apply for help with summer electric bills
through their $64 million Rate Relief and Assistance Initiative. ComEd already
has granted more than $15.4 million in bill credits to about 350,000 customers,
and nearly $30 million remains available to eligible customers this
year.
Rate relief grants, credits and other programs are available now to customers
most in need. For most programs, customers with incomes up to 200 percent of
the poverty level, or $40,000 for a family of four, qualify. In addition, a residential
special hardship fund is open to families with incomes up to 400 percent
of the poverty level, or $80,000 for a family of four. Enrollment is now
open, and ComEd encourages all customers who think that they may be eligible
to apply.
For energy saving ideas, or for more details on ComEd’s Rate Relief and Assistance
Initiative, visit www.ComEd.com, or call 888-806-CARE (2273).

Next Branch Pick-Up in October
Residents are reminded that there will be no branch pick-ups in July, August
or September. The Winthrop Harbor Branch Pick-Up Program, which is intended
for residents who prune their own trees, was revised for 2007. As tree
maintenance is generally performed in early Spring or late Autumn, the pickup
service occurs on Mondays in April & October only. Please mark your
calendars for the next dates that the Public Works Dept. will be picking up
pruned branches: October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
On these dates the Public Works Dept. will only be collecting trimmed
branches. Branches that are left from entire tree removals will not be
picked up. In addition, Public Works will not pick up lawn refuse, leaves,
grass clippings, tree trunks and/or logs, etceteras. To facilitate timely pickups,
the length of the limbs and branches should be left as long as possible.
Whole limbs chip up much better than small, cut up pieces. Please spread out
evenly along the parkway, with cut ends of branches and limbs facing the
street. Tangled piles of limbs or branches placed haphazardly will not
be picked up. If a tree trimming service or lawn service takes down, trims or
prunes your tree, please have the service company provide removal of the
American Legion Post 1943
On behalf of the Winthrop Harbor Samuel Schiera
American Legion Post 1943, we wish to thank the citizens
of Winthrop Harbor, the Village of Winthrop Harbor,
the businesses, and all others who supported our
successful Poppy Day fundraiser with their generous
donations.
Thanks to the Village officials who allowed us the use of
the 9th Street & Sheridan Rd. intersection for our fund
raiser.
A special thanks goes to Officer Carl Simmons for providing
safety equipment, and community service workers
to help our cause.
We were honored by having two sons of Samuel Schiera.
Loren, the Post Chaplin and Service Officer worked at
the corner of 9th St. and Sheridan Rd.
Tom and his family, who had come down to say hello to
his brother, took a can of poppies and worked the location
where his father, Sam, had
spent so many Poppy Days, outside
the Harbor Foodliner.
One of the most unselfish donations,
as told by one of the vets
working at 9th & Sheridan, came
when a young boy on a bicycle
stopped, waved the vet to the curb,
and dropped his lunch money into the collection can.
When the vet tried to return the money, the young fellow
said “I watch the news and have seen what our troops are
going through, thanks.” He rode off as quickly as he
could without even taking a poppy.
Thanks to all who supported us. Patriotism still lives in
our community!
Our American Legion Post 1943 meetings are held at the
Schlader Building on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at
7 pm. All visitors are invited to join us.
AARP Chapter 871
The July 17th meeting will be our summer luncheon at
the Community Center at 12 noon. Attendees are asked
to bring a dish to pass and their own cold beverage and
eating utensils.
Economic Development News
So Much to Be Proud Of…
We may be small, but we are definitely mighty when it
comes to the quality of businesses you can find in Winthrop
Harbor.
Whether it is Harbor Foods, with the best meat counter
for miles, Harbor Optical, the first Optical service ever
in the Village, the new Marathon Station, or The Station
Grille & Pub, we have a lot to offer and a lot in which to
take pride.
There are also those businesses that we don’t often think
of, like North Point Marina, the largest freshwater marina
in the United States, and Sandpiper Inn. The Inn
recently received well deserved recognition for providing
exemplary service to guests that had family members
receiving cancer treatment at the Midwestern Regional
Medical Center.
New or old, the businesses here give us most everything
we need and a lot of what we want. If you haven’t
shopped here lately, give it a try. See what’s new or go
back to that store that you haven’t been to in a while.
You will see that we really do have a lot to be proud of.
Featured Local Businesses
Check out www.winthropharbor.com to see new developments
and new business openings. This month we officially
welcome Harbor Optical and owner Debbie Ross to
the Village. Material on the web site continues to grow
with lots of information on business opportunities and
available commercial properties.
If you would like to feature your new business on the
village Web site, or if you want to know more about business
happenings in Winthrop Harbor, please contact Pat
Partnership for a Safer Community
Would you like to see a Neighborhood Watch program in
Winthrop Harbor If you are interested, we will be holding
an informational meeting on Thursday, July 19th,
at 7pm at the Schlader Building on 9th Street.
If you’re interested but cannot attend the meeting,
please e-mail Pam Humphres at phumphres@whpd.org
with your name and phone number.
We are hoping we can get enough people interested and
willing to get involved to get this program going in our
community.
debris. The Public Works Department will not remove
debris or branches left by tree trimming companies or
lawn service contractors.
Please note that small amounts of branches or twigs that
can fit into lawn refuse bags should be placed into bags
instead of in the parkway. These smaller piles of twigs
do not go through the chipper well.
You Drink, You Drive, You Lose!
The Winthrop Harbor Police Department reminds drivers that operating any type of motor
vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to tragic results.
In 2005 there were 421,522 traffic crashes in Illinois, an average of 1,155 crashes per day. An
average of 4 people per day were killed in these crashes, while 14 people per hour were injured.
In Lake County, 19,124 crashes occurred, an average of over 52 per day. Sixty people
died in Lake County crashes during 2005, with another 5,722 being injured.
Too many of these injuries and fatalities involve drivers who are under the influence of alcohol
or drugs. Please drive responsibly, and use designated drivers or public transportation
whenever necessary. Let’s work together in preventing these traffic related tragedies!
