Mission Statement
The church of St. Francis
Xavier, a Roman Catholic
parish in the Jesuit tradition,
strives to be a prophetic,
welcoming community, and an
inclusive witness to the presence
of Christ Jesus in our midst.
Mindful of our utter reliance on
God, and need for God’s grace, we rejoice
together in our celebration of the sacraments
and proclamation of the Gospel.
As a people of hope, we commit ourselves
through prayerful and creative discernment
to respond to God in our time by:
Being a respectful community
Where seekers and their questions are
welcomed, Where injustice is challenged,
Where the poor, the alienated and the
marginalized find a home,
And where people are refreshed,
reconciled and renewed.
From the desk of Fr. Joe
You may have noticed our new banners on the front of the church’s exterior with the words MOVING FORWARD- Renewed,
Renovated and Restored. These banners stand at the entrance to our home and remind us of where we’ve been and where we’re heading.
As we marvel at how far we’ve come, it gives me great joy to mention some specific new developments of renewal here at SFX!
On Monday, November 8 th we launched our new parish website. Our previous website, executed by Phil Gutierrez, helped us to successfully
promote our Capital Campaign. Our new website, developed by Suzy Fava, captures our nearly completed
renovation/restoration of our worship space and will promote all of our ministries, services, parish events and all that keeps us continually
moving forward.
You will also have noticed that this weekend we launch a new color bulletin cover. The logo for it, designed by Nancy Fava, was
adapted from our Capital Campaign logo. Each week our new parish secretary, Stephanie Fuentes, will layout the photos and other information
for our cover design. Please send Stephanie photos of recent parish events in your ministries for possible inclusion on our
front cover.
We have a beautiful new Mass Card for the deceased. Nancy Fava, worked on the design, and Carlos Martín, provided the photo. We
hope in the weeks ahead to develop a new Mass Card for the Living along with other choices for the deceased. As you know, the tradition
of offering a Mass Card is a fitting way to give a gift both to the family and loved ones of the deceased and to the parish.
Looking ahead Patrick Brewis, Chere Krist and Nancy Fava are working on a new Guidebook for our Church. Patrick is also preparing
a feature-length documentary about our parish’s history with never-before-seen footage of the renovation and restoration. This film
is slated to premiere on Friday, April 8, 2011 and will include a revival of the museum that was exhibited during our rededication
weekend. On the Capital Campaign front, Carter Crawford continues to work with Patrick to keep track of pledges as well as provide
gentle reminders about pledge fulfillment.
Looking ahead to Advent, which begins next weekend, we will introduce two new changes in our Liturgical Celebration at all of our
Masses. First, as a sign of our appreciation and respect for the Word of God proclaimed in the Gospel, we will not only sing the Alleluia
before proclaiming the Gospel, but again at the conclusion of the Gospel. We ask that everyone remain standing until the Gospel
Book is returned to the front of the Ambo and we finish singing this concluding Alleluia. Second, in anticipation of the liturgical
changes based on a new translation of the Roman Missal to be implemented during Advent a year from now, we will be proclaiming
together the Apostles’ Creed. This will be printed each week in the music issue. By familiarizing ourselves again with the Apostles’
Creed, we will then be better able to vary the three versions of the creed – Dialogue, Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed and Apostles’ –
during different liturgical seasons as suggested by the new translation. Certainly, some of the changes from this new translation will
prove challenging. Change always is. We hope to phase these changes in so that they will not be a complete shock come Advent 2011
and we will be able to more seamlessly integrate them into our communal prayer and praise of our loving God.
As we enter the beautiful Seasons of Advent and Christmas in our renewed home, may we continue to gather as Church, as friends in
the Lord, desiring to pray, praise, worship and love one another as Christ, the King has loved us.
ABILITY XAVIER
This weekend, we celebrate the presence and gifts of persons with disabilities at Xavier. This year, we also celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark piece of legislation that extended welcome to persons with
mental, physical, and emotional disabilities regarding access to buildings, employment, and communications. This week, we also
celebrate the anniversary of the US Bishops’ Pastoral Statement on Persons with Disabilities, a document that affirms the equality
of all persons – disabled and non-disabled—in the Church.
Interestingly, the US Catholic Bishops provided guidance and insight as the ADA was made into law. According to a recent news
article by Nancy Frazier O'Brien (Catholic News Service), when the Americans with Disabilities Act was being debated in the U.S.
Senate 20 years ago, excerpts from the pastoral statement on people with disabilities issued by the U.S. bishops 12 years earlier
were read on the Senate floor in support of its passage.
"It is not enough merely to affirm the rights of people with disabilities. We
must actively work to make them real in the fabric of modern society.
Recognizing that individuals with disabilities have a claim to our respect
because they are persons, because they share in the one redemption of Christ,
and because they contribute to our society by their activity within it, the
church must become an advocate for and with them."
An estimated 54 million Americans have a mental or physical disability. More than 13 million Americans use crutches, walkers,
or a wheelchair. 1.8 million Americans are legally blind, 1 million Americans are deaf, and 2.5 million Americans have speech
impairments. Over 16 million Americans have a mental or emotional illness that interferes with tasks of everyday life.
As Catholics, it is our responsibility to offer welcome and acceptance to these persons.
The ADA protects the rights of people with disabilities to equal access in employment; state and local government programs and
services; places of public accommodation such as businesses,
transportation and nonprofit service providers; and telecommunications.
How do the ADA and the words of the US Bishops affect us here at Xavier We are blessed to be a part of a parish that puts the
spirit of inclusion into practice. Our recent church restoration put a strong importance on physical accessibility, incorporating
ramps, pew cutouts, and smooth floors into the new sacred space. This accessibility welcomes persons with
physical disabilities to serve as liturgical ministers and to be more involved in the parish.
Physical accessibility is wonderful, but does not in itself provide welcome. A spirit of openness and inclusion is key. We are
lucky that this spirit already permeates our community. At the same time, we must continually commit ourselves to
maintaining this beautiful charism.
•How do we treat people who are different from us, who hold different beliefs than us, or who disagree with us
•How sensitive are we to people with mental illness or other disabilities that are not immediately visible
•What can we as individuals do to keep the spirit of inclusion going strong
Today, we are blessed to have special guests with us to help us celebrate inclusion and welcome of persons with disabilities.
Fr. James Bradley, director of the Office for Disabled Persons in the Diocese of Brooklyn, will preside at Sunday’s 11:30am Mass.
Fr. Bradley will the first presider in a wheelchair to celebrate Mass in our newly restored church! After the 11:30 Mass, Fr. Richard
Leonard, SJ, will discuss and sign his newest book,”Where the Hell is God” In his beautifully touching book, Fr. Leonard explores
the eternal question of finding the presence of God in difficult times, such as being faced with a disability. We are grateful
for the presence of these special guests, and all who celebrate with us on this wonderful day!
