Feeling overwhelmed by the ream of paper handed out to you at
the National Register workshop or the packet of information you downloaded to
guide you in preparing a nomination for the National Register of Historic Places
Maybe you have a tax credit project that is on the fast track and you have neither
the time nor the inclination to moonlight as a historian or
architectural historian and prepare a nomination. Perhaps you are feeling
frustrated after receiving staff comments and changes for the umpteenth time on
the nomination you have promised to prepare for your church. If you fall into one
of these categories you might want to consider hiring a consultant to help you
complete the nomination process quickly and successfully.
The list on the reverse side of this page contains the names of qualified historic preservation
professionals who have successfully completed National Register nominations in Iowa
during the past three years and whose nominations require only one review by the State
Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) staff before being scheduled for review by the State
Nominations Review Committee (SNRC). They are not the only qualified historic
preservation professionals working in Iowa, but are the only ones preparing and
presenting nominations to the SNRC on a regular and consistent basis. For a complete list
of historic preservation professionals working in Iowa, please go to www.iowahistory.org,
click on Review and Compliance Program, and then click on 106 Consultant List.
Please remember, however, that as professionals, these consultants charge for their services. What they
charge and what you are willing to pay is a private matter between you and them. From what we have
heard, the going rate for preparing an individual nomination can range from as little
as $1,000 to as much as $5,000 depending on the complexity of the property, the
availability of research materials and published local histories, the amount of time
required for completing research and writing, and travel time and distance to visit
the property and make a presentation to the state review committee. The cost for
district nominations usually runs from $5,000 to $20,000 on up, depending on the
size of the district and the number of properties, as well as the factors noted above for individual
properties. If cost is a problem, most consultants appear to be willing to negotiate downward on costs
when applicants agree to conduct some basic research and provide photographs, etc. The more work
you are able and willing to do, the less the consultant will charge. There are also grants that can be
applied for to hire a consultant to prepare a National Register nomination.
