Timboon and District Healthcare
winter 2013
An insight into the various activities taking place at Timboon and District Healthcare Service
Congratulations to Our Volunteers
Dear Community Members,
From the
CEO
As I prepare this note for our quality
newsletter, I am saddened by the news
that Libby Fifis our Director of Clinical
Services has been offered and accepted
the role of Director of Clinical Services
at Colac Area Health, and has therefore
resigned from Timboon and District
HealthCare Service, effective from June
13th 2013.
Libby’s six months with us has brought
great skill and wisdom as we prepare for
our National Standards Accreditation in
August of this year. Her positive leadership
and practice wisdom has supported our
nursing staff in countless ways, and for this
we thank her and wish her every success
for the future.
Back in April, Timboon and District
Healthcare Service celebrated the opening
of the Men’s Shed, a great occasion for all
the community and celebrated by more
than 100 attendees. We have appointed
a new Men’s Shed Coordinator Mr. David
Pringuer, who commenced in the role on
May 21st. We look forward to the continued
development of the Men’s Shed facility.
Extensions to the Timboon Clinic are nearing
completion. These extensions will provide
for additional consulting room, student study
areas, and an additional waiting room. Minor
changes to the front reception will enhance
confidentially and patient privacy.
I wish to express my sincere appreciation to
all our staff, our Doctors, and the community,
for the ongoing support of our work and
service to our clients. There have been some
enormous changes in recent years, as well as
some celebrated developments and growth.
All of which we can be truly grateful.
Wayne Weaire
Chief Executive Officer
During National Volunteers Week
Timboon and District Healthcare Service
volunteers were recognised at two
important functions a Volunteers morning
tea at Timboon and District Healthcare
Service and an afternoon tea at the
Cobden Senior Citizens Clubrooms.
Over 50 people attended a morning
tea organised by Timboon and District
Healthcare to celebrate Volunteer
Awareness Week. Many services and
programs offered at TDHS are reliant on
help from volunteers to
operate. These services and programs
include - Planned activity group
in Cobden and Timboon, Visually
impaired group (Friendlies), Meals on
wheels program available in Cobden
and Timboon, Community Transport
program, Respite program, Men’s Shed,
and the Opportunity Shop (TOPS).
TDHS has over 166 registered members
of the community volunteering their
time and effort in some capacity. In
recognition of their selfless efforts all
volunteers received a certificate of
appreciation. Without the help from our
volunteers many of the services and
programs offered at TDHS would not
be able to continue in the same format.
Many of our programs are in need
of more volunteers, particularly the
Simpson area. If you think you have
what it takes and would like more
information phone 5558 6000.
The Community Transport Team
provides a community transport
service to Timboon, Cobden and
surrounding areas. The Community
Transport team is made up of 25
volunteers that not only give up
their own time to help their local
community, but also provide this
service in their own personal vehicles.
The team has been in operation for 15
years and is growing each year with more
volunteers joining to assist in the growing
demand from the community.
At the end of 2012 we have had 1,295
requests for Community Transport from
93 clients.
The Community Transport team assists
the local community with transportation
to such things as medical appointments,
exercise classes at the local community
health centre in Cobden and Timboon as
well as transporting clients to Planned
Activity Groups in Timboon and Cobden.
The volunteers frequently transport
clients to places further away such as
Warrnambool and Colac for medical
appointments and treatment at the larger
hospitals. The Community Transport
Team is a necessary and valuable
component of the Timboon and District
Healthcare Service, by having such
incredible volunteers allows the service to
run efficiently.
A few team members do regular drives
each week which allows the drivers to
establish a close relationship with clients.
After 4 weeks full time in Melbourne I’ve returned home to
complete assignments and am happy to say that I’m nearly
all finished. The extra knowledge and qualification gained
will provide me with essential skills to provide a much
needed resource to the community. So now I will be able
to treat men and women with pelvic floor and continence
issues. If you think you might need such a service please
call me at TDHS Physiotherapy Department on 5558
Kaz Cooke Delights
the Women of Timboon
130 Women from the Timboon and District attended the
9th Annual Timboon and District Healthcare, Women’s
Health Night on Wednesday the 1st May 2013. The
night was abuzz with women’s chatter as they ate a
magnificent meal of Moroccan spiced chicken or sugar
cured salmon followed by a dessert of flourless orange
cake or chocolate macadamia fudge, thanks to the Fat
Cow, Timboon.
The women then listened expectantly to the renowned
author and journalist Kaz Cooke as she provided them
with an insight into life as a woman. Kaz’s extensive
research has led her to write the bestselling books which
include Up The Duff: The Real Guide to Pregnancy;
Kidwrangling: Looking After Babies, Toddlers and
Preschoolers; Girl Stuff: Your Full-On Guide to the Teen
Years and Women’s Stuff, an indispensible guide to life
without the usual fibs, faff and fakery.
Kaz Cook and guests Leonie Wallace and Terrianne Stansfield
Kaz presented the women with an insight into parenting
stating “there is no such thing as the perfect parent – and
there is no such thing as a bad family meal. Whatever it
is, it just needs a new name. Putting the word ‘surprise’
at the end of a meal name is always good. Could be Tuna
Surprise, or sausage surprise, even if the surprise is your
forgot to buy the sausages.”
