Your garden and organics bin
is collected weekly. This
service allows garden and
organic material to be taken
out of the waste stream and
converted to usable products
such as compost. This also
reduces landfill costs and
environmental impact.

- flatten cardboard boxes and cartons
- squash plastic bottles and aluminium cans

base bin with yellow lid
as usual. All new and

collected fortnightly. This is
for waste that is not organic,
reusable or recyclable and ends
up in Ballina Shire’s landfill.
The more resources we can
compost, reuse or recycle
the better for the lifespan of
the landfill.

• Pet droppings/kitty litter in plastic bags
Tips
• NO chemicals, paint or sharps
• Either wrap disposable nappies into themselves or seal
in a plastic bag before placing in bin
• Consider placing your pet droppings in the garden/
organics bin either loosely or in a compostable bag
• Keep your bin in a shaded part of your property

Your waste management centre
You can take a wide range of items that you cannot fit into your collection bins and
other recyclable items to the Ballina Waste Management Centre.
Hours of Operation: 7.00am to 4.00pm, 7 days (excluding public holidays)
Location: Southern Cross Drive, Ballina (in Ballina’s Industrial Estate)
Items that can be dropped off by residents free of charge:
• Fluorescent light bulbs
• Batteries (all sizes)
• Motor and vegetable oil (small amounts)
Other items accepted (fee applies):
• Gas cylinders
• Fridges and other whitegoods
• Building waste
• Tyres and tyre tubes
• Sorted recycling
• Mixed waste
The Waste Management Centre DOES NOT accept:
• Chemicals or paints
• Sharps
• Asbestos
• Hazardous waste

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What bins do I put out on what day
Your collection day remains the same. Two bins are
collected each week, alternating:
• the garden/organics bin (lime green lid) and
recycling bin (yellow lid) one week
• the garden/organics bin (lime green lid) and mixed
waste bin (red or dark green lid) the next week
A calendar is available on Council’s website or can be
collected from Council’s Customer Service Centre or
Waste Management Centre.
Rural 2-bin collection service
There is NO CHANGE to the rural waste service.
Rural residents continue with a 2-bin service (weekly mixed
waste and fortnightly recycling).
What bags can I use in the Garden / Organics bin
It is preferred that food scraps are wrapped in
newspaper. However, certain kinds of bags are
acceptable.
You can use:
‘Biobags’, compostable bags available from
Council in 2011.
bags labelled ‘biodegradable’ which will break
down in compost.
You cannot use:
regular plastic bags.
bags labelled ‘degradable’ which will not
break down in compost.
Can I change my garden/organics bin size
Smaller 140L garden/organics bins are available on request.
To apply, complete the application form (available on
Council’s website or at Council’s Customer Service Centre).
Please note that the waste service charge is the same for
both 240L and 140L garden/organics bins.
Garden/organics bins are owned by Council and are
to remain at the property address.
What about the kitchen bins and compostable bags
To accommodate residents that require assistance with
managing their kitchen scraps a limited number of kitchen
bins and rolls of 75 compostable bags will be available from
Council’s Waste Management Centre from July 2011 until
December 2011.
Only one kitchen bin and/or roll of bags will be available per
household and proof of residence must be presented. The
provision of these bins and bags will be re-evaluated by
Council early 2012.
Bin presentation guidelines
Bins should:
• Be presented before 5am or on the night
before your collection day.
• Be a maximum of 1m from the kerb / roadside
with front to kerb and 1m apart.
• Not be overfilled - lids must close fully.
• Not be obstructed by any vehicles, trees
or other objects.
• Bins must be removed from kerbside on
the same day of service.
