is collected weekly. This<br />
service allows garden and<br />
organic material to be taken<br />
out of the waste stream and<br />

such as compost. This also<br />
reduces landfill costs and<br />

collected fortnightly. This is<br />
for waste that is not organic,<br />
reusable or recyclable and ends<br />
up in Ballina Shire’s landfill.<br />
<strong>The</strong> more resources we can<br />
compost, reuse or recycle<br />
the better for the lifespan of<br />
the landfill.<br />

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS<br />
What bins do I put out on what day<br />
<strong><strong>You</strong>r</strong> collection day remains the same. Two bins are<br />
collected each week, alternating:<br />
• the garden/organics bin (lime green lid) and<br />
recycling bin (yellow lid) one week<br />
• the garden/organics bin (lime green lid) and mixed<br />
waste bin (red or dark green lid) the next week<br />
A calendar is available on Council’s website or can be<br />
collected from Council’s Customer Service Centre or<br />
Waste Management Centre.<br />
Rural 2-bin collection service<br />
<strong>The</strong>re is NO CHANGE to the rural waste service.<br />
Rural residents continue with a 2-bin service (weekly mixed<br />
waste and fortnightly recycling).<br />
What bags can I use in the Garden / Organics bin<br />
It is preferred that food scraps are wrapped in<br />
<strong>new</strong>spaper. However, certain kinds of bags are<br />
acceptable.<br />
<strong>You</strong> can use:<br />
‘Biobags’, compostable bags available from<br />
Council in 2011.<br />
bags labelled ‘biodegradable’ which will break<br />
down in compost.<br />
<strong>You</strong> cannot use:<br />
regular plastic bags.<br />
bags labelled ‘degradable’ which will not<br />
break down in compost.<br />
Can I change my garden/organics bin size<br />
Smaller 140L garden/organics bins are available on request.<br />
<strong>To</strong> apply, complete the application form (available on<br />
Council’s website or at Council’s Customer Service Centre).<br />
Please note that the waste service charge is the same for<br />
both 240L and 140L garden/organics bins.<br />
Garden/organics bins are owned by Council and are<br />
to remain at the property address.<br />
What about the kitchen bins and compostable bags<br />
<strong>To</strong> accommodate residents that require assistance with<br />
managing their kitchen scraps a limited number of kitchen<br />
bins and rolls of 75 compostable bags will be available from<br />
Council’s Waste Management Centre from July 2011 until<br />
December 2011.<br />
Only one kitchen bin and/or roll of bags will be available per<br />
household and proof of residence must be presented. <strong>The</strong><br />
provision of these bins and bags will be re-evaluated by<br />
Council early 2012.<br />
Bin presentation guidelines<br />
Bins should:<br />
• Be presented before 5am or on the night<br />
before your collection day.<br />
• Be a maximum of 1m from the kerb / roadside<br />
with front to kerb and 1m apart.<br />
• Not be overfilled - lids must close fully.<br />
• Not be obstructed by any vehicles, trees<br />
or other objects.<br />
• Bins must be removed from kerbside on<br />
the same day of service.<br />
