Lovers <strong>of</strong> learning, as extolled<br />
in <strong>Masonic</strong> degrees, appreciate and<br />
learn from the past and ponder the<br />
questions <strong>of</strong> the present. In pursuit<br />
<strong>of</strong> excellence, they also look to the<br />
future and try to anticipate its needs.<br />
The staff <strong>of</strong> The <strong>Masonic</strong> Library<br />
and Museum <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />
(MLMP) take great pride in<br />
assisting members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Masonic</strong><br />
fraternity, as well as the general<br />
public. As part <strong>of</strong> this dedication,<br />
MLMP participates in cooperative<br />
and collaborative ventures with<br />
other cultural institutions and<br />
organizations throughout the<br />
Greater Philadelphia region.<br />
The Library, founded in 1817,<br />
is considered to have one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
finest collections for the study <strong>of</strong><br />
Freemasonry. It holds 75,000 volumes, 30,000 documents<br />
and manuscripts, and a vast number <strong>of</strong> print and photographic<br />
works. The collection is available for public use.<br />
Scholars, including members <strong>of</strong> the fraternity, continue<br />
to conduct research by utilizing the Online Public Access<br />
Catalogue (OPAC), a link which is accessible through<br />
MLMP’s website. MLMP hosted six scholars in <strong>2011</strong>. One read<br />
through the early minute books <strong>of</strong> Lodge No. 59, researching<br />
Lodge Secretary Thomas Cave. Other researchers’ topics<br />

aria “O Isis and Osiris,” sung at the dedication <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Masonic</strong> Temple in 1873.<br />

Lodge No. 19, <strong>Masonic</strong> libraries<br />
and librarianship, bookbindings<br />

Giaimo conducted some significant<br />
research for three scholars outside<br />
the United States. Luis Otero,<br />
Grand Librarian for the Grand<br />
Lodge <strong>of</strong> Puerto Rico, was<br />
interested in the membership<br />
list <strong>of</strong> the lodge “Le Temple des<br />
Vertus Theologales” No. 103 <strong>of</strong><br />
Havana, Cuba, warranted by the<br />
Grand Lodge <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />
in 1804 (warrant surrendered in<br />
1821). Carlos Francisco Moreno,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Mexico, was interested in the<br />
25 Spanish lodges warranted by<br />
the Grand Lodge <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania in Mexico, Cuba, Santo<br />
Domingo and Louisiana. Christophe de Brouwer, an archivist<br />
in Belgium, was looking for the “livre d’or” <strong>of</strong> the Count de<br />
Saint-Laurent, a.k.a. “The Gold Book,” and history <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite (A.A.S.R.) Ritual in the<br />
United States <strong>of</strong> America by Francis Timothy Watson. Staff<br />
sent him a photocopy, as well as a few pages from Sachse’s<br />
History <strong>of</strong> the A.A.S.R concerning “The Gold Book.”<br />
