Anyone can form a group. Have you got an idea for something you’d like to do Do you
know other people who would be interested in working with you to get it done
If yes, you might want to think about becoming a group...

To raise money for your group;
To be able to do a wider range of things;
To get connected to other groups and services.
What do I need
If you’re thinking about forming a group contact your local CVS (Council for Voluntary
Service) they should be able to support you with all the things you need to start-up.
Some of these things are:
A governing document, explaining who you are, what you want to do and why
you want to do it (your aims and objectives). This is so you have something
to show to funders etc. that explains what the group is about.

A detailed version of this document is a constitution. This gives the group a legal
framework, and so makes sure that you operate legally without risk to yourselves. It
includes things like electing people to take on specific roles. Your CVS will help here.
A group bank account. You will need two people who are willing to be signatories.
Look through this
toolkit to get some
ideas of what groups
can do and the
things they need
to think about.
You will need to hold group meetings to plan what the group wants to do. Someone needs to
write down what is said in these meetings (take minutes) and these minutes need to be kept.
You may be able to work
as part of an existing
organisation, such
as a parent-teacher
association, without
setting up as a separate
legal entity. Check the
parent organisation
is allowed to do this.
