A Century of Gratitude and Joy
1911-2011
What the future bears: new challenges and possibilities
How joyful I am! My heart is grounded in the Buddha's Universal Vow.
My thoughts flow in the inconceivable ocean of the Dharma.
OUR VIBRANT SANGHA, the Berkeley Buddhist Temple, celebrates its one hundred years as
a nembutsu community with the theme, A Century of Gratitude and Joy 1911-2011.
Our temple was founded by young immigrants from Japan, strangers in a strange land, who
were faced with mountains of challenges and hardships. Yet, they took on those challenges and
overcame those hardships with faith, hard work, and deep sense of hope for the future. Their
devotion, and that of their children, grandchildren and many others, has opened up a world of
spiritual embrace in Berkeley for one hundred years.
These few articles in the Padma have been offered in the hope that we may all appreciate
the richness of our temple's history. As we reflect upon our temple's one hundred years of
existence, we cannot help but have a deep sense of gratitude for the people and events that have
allowed it to thrive as a living sangha. And now we find that we are able to move ahead into a
new century, with courage, hope and joy.
We are still faced with many challenges today. On a global scale we know that the world is
not at peace. Conflicts abound in nations, cities and even homes. The state of the economy is still
troubling, with many people out of work or devoid of hope. Poverty, discrimination, and
inequality remain realities in our world. And yet, the winds of changes blow everywhere. Old
structures crumble before the weight of time. New ideas and technologies offer the promise of a
better future, but sometimes at the cost of our shared and treasured heritage.
Our temple is not immune from problems. While our membership may not be shrinking, it
is growing older. Our temple's health is fine, even in today's financial climate. Yet its fundraising
efforts are based upon practices that were adopted decades ago. Our temple is a mature,
stable and respected part of the Berkeley civic community, but at times it stills feels too selfsecure.
Ours is a tradition of Buddhism established in Japan. Our temple was founded and built
by persons of Japanese ancestry. It still values many aspects of Japanese art and culture. And yet
we must ask whether our temple can, or should, move beyond its Japanese character.
I am convinced that our temple will face these and other new challenges in the same way
that it always has—directly and positively. After all, we are disciples of the Buddha and
followers of the nembutsu. In the words of Shinran Shōnin, our hearts are "grounded in the
Buddha's Universal Vow" and our thoughts "flow in the inconceivable ocean of the Dharma."
With our history as a foundation and the teachings as our guide, we will welcome into our doors
people from all walks of life, all ethnic and religious backgrounds, all lifestyles, and all points of
view. We will rejoice in our sangha of B L E N D (Buddhists Living in Equality and Non-
Discrimination). We will allow our young leaders the chance to develop new ways to keep our
temple financially viable. We will continue to be active members of the greater community,
extending our hands to those who need support. Through the nembutsu, we will help each other
live lives of Awareness, Authenticity and Appreciation. We will continue to focus on the
Dharma, knowing that the Buddha's teaching of harmony and oneness can offer our world the
hope of peace and freedom, at long last.
What a century it has been! What an exciting journey there is to come!
Presidents’ Message
As we write this in mid‐September, it is hard to believe that we will be celebrating
the Berkeley Buddhist Temple’s Centennial in a little over a month. We hope all of
you will join in the service and luncheon on October 22. As most of you know, the
planning and organization for this event of our century has been several years in the
making and at this penultimate juncture it is hard to believe we are now almost
there. More significantly, this event is a culmination of the efforts of a myriad
number of people on behalf of the temple.
As a part of our anniversary, we also hope you have had the opportunity to attend
some, if not all, of the Centennial lectures that we have held this past year. From
lectures on the founding of the temple, the basketball and music programs, and the
Buddhist Study Center, the recollections and stories of the presenters have certainly
brought back to light the breadth and depth of our history. Just as in the planning of
the Centennial, it is hard to believe all that has gone into our journey thus far. For
many of us who have been members of the BBT for a relatively short time, it was not
only informative but humbling to hear of all that has transpired to allow us to have
the temple we have today.
The one common theme that we saw emerging from all of these presentations was
that there is something quite special about our temple and, more precisely, its
people. It is the people who have made us what we are. Although the reasons for
being a member at the BBT are numerous and varied, the one that we have heard
most often is that it is personal connections with the Sangha that drew people to
form the original Buddhist Association, and personal connections that continue to
draw people to our temple.
Thus, as we look forward to the next century and beyond, we only need to look
toward ourselves to get a peek at what is ahead. Our people are the ongoing
strength of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple. This strength is one that sustains us
today. It is also one that has renewed itself with every generation of Sangha
members, regardless of how and when they encountered our temple.
9/12/01: The Second Disaster
by Diane Ames
Now that we have held the ten year memorial services for the victims of the ghastly mass murder
on September 11, 2001, may they rest in peace, it may be time to remember the second disaster, the
one that followed.
Why Because if the Buddha told us once, he told us a thousand times not to give way to
anger and fear. These emotions, rooted as they are in attachment to and desire to protect the self,
can distort our thoughts and perceptions until a stick lying in the shadows seems to be a rattlesnake.
Then we fire a gun at the perceived rattlesnake, causing bullets to ricochet right back at us. This
process was vividly illustrated after the planes dove into the Twin Towers. I’m sure we all
remember the mass arrests of men who were apparently rounded up just for being recent arrivals
from the Middle East (the 15 9/11 attackers were from the Middle East, it was explained), held
incommunicado, and not infrequently beaten up in detention. One houseful of men had been
turned in by neighbors alarmed because they dried their laundry on hedges. Others were arrested
after two Pakistani restaurants, business rivals, turned in each other’s entire staffs. Only a handful
of these people were even accused of having anything to do with the attack, and in the end none
were found to have been involved. But by the time they were almost all deported, habeas corpus
lay in shreds which have not really been put back together. Many nisei were deeply upset as they
watched what looked like a replay of their own World War II nightmare.
There were more unnerving events: the suburban ladies solemnly patrolling their
neighborhoods in cars, looking for terrorists in turbans, the calls in the press to torture all kinds of
people–it got scary. Surely after ten years, we can ask why it all happened.
One reason given at the time was that people had real cause to fear more terrorism. If so,
surely more rational action to protect the public would have been more to the point. Another was
that all this hysteria was “understandable” because, well, the public was hysterical, a curiously
circular argument. Actually I had the impression at the time that for every American who was
really hysterical (and who needed compassionate hugs, not yet more hysteria, from others), there
were ten who thought everyone else was hysterical, so they had better go along–or shut up.
The point of dredging all this up is to remind us that in the (inevitable) next crisis, we really
must remember the Buddha’s simple warning not to give way to anger and fear.

SPECIAL THANK YOU TO BUKKYO DENDO KYOKAI!
As our Centennial celebration nears, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) for its
support and generous contributions to our temple. This generosity has made possible the completion of many of our major
renovation projects for the Centennial and the BBT/Yehan Numata Centennial Speaker Series. BDK founder, the late Rev.
Dr. Yehan Numata, was an incredible pioneer and visionary who parlayed his knowledge and talents into a multinational
corporation which continues to make possible his many philanthropic projects to further the understanding and spread of
Jodo Shinshu Buddhism throughout the world. We at Berkeley are fortunate that he felt a special kinship to our temple
during his student years at Cal and developed friendships with many earlier BBT families. This connection continues on
through his son, Mr. Toshihide Numata, and we are extremely grateful to him for his help with the Centennial. We are also
most thankful to BDK America’s current Director, Rev. Brian K. Nagata, for his tireless efforts to coordinate the many
projects made possible by this BDK gift. Doumo arigatou gozaimasu…
CENTENNIAL TIDBITS
Former BBT minister, Rev. Haruyoshi Kusada, was (amongst his many other talents) a master of aikido. He often used
Rev. Matsumoto as his unwilling subject and easily flipped him over to demonstrate the move to others!
Our current temple building was designed by architect brothers Harry and George Nakahara, who generously donated
their services. It was completed in 1956 at a total cost of $80,000! Remember the old Mel’s Drive‐in next door

BBT WOMEN BREAKING BARRIERS INTO THE 21 ST CENTURY
Nora Hataye was not afraid to serve as the first and lone
woman on the BBT board as secretary during the ‘60’s, a
period of vibrant growth in our temple. She went on to
play major leadership roles on many levels, breaking
barriers not only at temple but also at UC campuswide,
from which she retired as purchasing manager after 30
years of service to the University .
.
Judy Kono became the first female BBT Board
president and one of the first in the entire BCA to
serve in this capacity! She served from 1996 to 1998
and again in 2001. While still active at BBT in
various areas, she is also coordinator of CBE
programs and a mainstay of its success and vitality.
Sensei Diana Thompson (left) and Edythe Vassall are BBT’s first minister assistants and have been trained under the
auspices of Rev. Matsumoto and the Center of Buddhist Education’s MAP (Ministers Assistant Program), and in the
case of Diana, through the Institute of Buddhist Studies as well. Sensei Diana will be taking assignments at other Bay
District churches from October before she receives a permanent assignment next year. Edythe serves as the Assistant
to Rev. Kodo Umezu, Director of the Center of Buddhist Education, in addition to her minister’s assistant duties at BBT.
We are most grateful to them for their gracious assistance to the temple and for their inspirational dharma talks.

HOW DOES OUR GARDEN GROW
Very well, thanks to our many dedicated volunteers. Did you notice the new landscaping in front of the
Old Temple Thanks to Wes Fukumori and his son Derek, there is now an attractive garden with an
Asian flavor. Also, the area outside of the social hall has been beautifully upgraded thanks to the efforts
of our gardening staff: Shig Hoki, Scott Takeda, and Dick Adachi. The rock was donated by Grace Ehara,
and the bench was made by Jeffrey Nagafuji, who donated this many years ago as a scouting project.
Thank you all for beautifying our temple grounds and before our guests arrive for the Centennial!

that Bazaar earnings will be transferred to the general fund in August. Emiko Katsumoto reported that proceeds from
the Obon food sales will go to the Centennial fund, after expenses are paid.
Correspondence: President Nishimura passed around the correspondence folder. The BCA sent an update with
regard to the debt relief campaign that 10% of the goal has been reached so far.
OTHER REPORTS
EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Lucy Hamai discussed the need to amend the wedding gift allowance given
by the Temple to a member getting married at the Temple or in a ceremony officiated by the BBT minister. Gary Oda
made a motion of an allowance of $100 for this gift; seconded by Emiko Katsumoto and passed.
SATSUKI BAZAAR: Kiyoshi Katsumoto noted that a final report will be issued next month.
NEW TABLES AND CHAIRS: Emiko Katsumoto reported that the Centennial Comm. felt that any pur-chase of new
tables and chairs should be a Temple expense and not a Centennial expense. Discussion took place over the source
and cost of new tables and chairs. Kiyoshi Katsumoto moved that $3000 be allocated to the purchase of 10 eight foot
tables and 80 new folding chairs; seconded by Takashi Nikaidoh and passed.
SOCIAL HALL LANDSCAPING: Emiko Katsumoto reported that Shig Hoki, Dick Adachi, and Scott Takeda plan to
improve this area with some new plantings.
TRANSOM WINDOWS IN HONDO: Emiko Katsumoto reported that the Centennial Comm. felt that repair of any
cracked windows should fall under Temple maintenance. The Board decided to ask Craig Griffin to research the costs
on repair.
TEMPLE ORGAN: Kiyoshi Katsumoto explained that the organ must be moved for the Centennial service to
accommodate guest ministers, the Sangha singers, and gagaku musicians. There is a risk that the vacuum tubes of
this very old organ may be damaged, and they cannot be easily replaced. The Board discussed the condition and
usage of the organ and decided that it does NOT object to relinquishing the organ. Kiyoshi will research how best to
accomplish this task.
FAX MACHINE: Kiyoshi Katsumoto reported that the Temple currently does not have a dedicated fax line nor does the
fax machine work. The office computer printer has scanning and faxing capabilities. Kiyoshi will try to hook up the
printer/fax to the current Temple telephone line, so that faxes can be sent and received. Kiyoshi moved that the
Temple fax number be deleted from the directory and any Temple correspondence; seconded by Gary Oda and
passed.
REQUEST FOR TEMPLE USE: Lucy Hamai reported that the FAC will have a Temple facility usage report ready in
September. However, she recently received a request from Betty Kano of the Tule Lake Pilgrimage Comm. to use the
Old Temple and its kitchen for a potluck dinner and meeting to design a cookbook on Aug. 28. Kiyoshi Katsumoto
moved that the Board give a provisional approval for use of the requested facilities by the Tule Lake Pilgrimage Comm.
if 1) a Temple member will volunteer to be on-site as the responsible party for security and 2) a suggested fee of $100
for the first 3 hours is accepted. Motion seconded by Don Hamasaki and passed. Lucy will inform Betty Kano of the
decision.
TEMPLE SECURITY: Gary Oda noted that Rev. Matsumoto continues to research the adhesive issue with regard to
the Gohonzon, and he will wait for the minister’s decision.
CENTENNIAL: Emiko Katsumoto reported the following 1) the rummage sale will take place 8/20-8/21 and more
volunteers are needed to help; 2) the invitations will be mailed in mid-August; 3) a price sheet is being created to solicit
business ads for the program booklet.
Takashi Nikaidoh was thanked for providing refreshments for the meeting. The next meeting is Tuesday, September
13. The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 PM with closing gassho by Kiyoshi Katsumoto.
