Since You Asked…
We have many customers write back on
our surveys asking us why we don’t
accept certain materials in our singlestream
recyclable collection program and
ask us to add new materials to the
extensive list that is already collected.
Western Disposal collects your singlestream
recyclables and delivers them to
the Boulder County Recycle Center in
Boulder. Western collects all the
materials that are accepted by the
processing facility, but we do not decide
what will or will not be accepted. This is
controlled by Boulder County and Eco-
Cycle, the operators of the facility.
Boulder County from time to time may
add a new material or limit some
materials you may think should be
recyclable. While you may read that
certain materials are recyclable or
manufacturers will promote the materials
they produce as recyclable, there are
factors that will affect their processing
acceptability such as:
Is there a commercial market for the
material and is there enough volume
of the material to be economically
viable to process and store
Can the sorting equipment and the
sorting lines effectively and efficiently
process a material For example:
shredded paper
Does a material, when mixed with
others, actually become a
contaminant in the sorting process
For example: plastic bags
Can a material damage the sorting
equipment For example: hangers
Is a material compostable but not
recyclable Examples: wax-coated
cardboard, napkins and paper towels
We want to help you recycle as much as
possible, but we hope you understand
that we do not determine what can be
collected and that there are reasons why
the Boulder County Recycle Center
cannot accept certain materials. Please
visit the frequently asked questions
section of Eco-Cycles’ web site at
www.ecocycle.org for more information
on what is accepted for curbside
collection, what can be recycled at their
drop-off center and at CHaRM (Center
for Hard to Recycle Materials), but not at
the curb and why materials you think
should be recyclable are not accepted.
Closing the Loop—Organically
Closing-the-loop is a term often used in recycling to describe the desire
for communities to not only recycle but to buy the products made from
recycled materials and use them in the community where the recyclable
materials originated. That same concept applies to organic materials; what
could be better than returning the composted materials that originated in
the community back in the community
To “close-the-loop” on organics, Western Disposal has notified the city of
Boulder, Boulder County, City of Louisville and the Town of Superior that
we will make finished compost available to them free-of-charge to be used
in their communities. Each town’s allotment of compost is based upon the
amount of curbside organics we collected in the community or, in the case
of Superior, from their yard waste drop-off site. Any compost remaining
after the communities take what they want of their allocation will be made
available free-of-charge to Boulder County farmers for use on their farms.
Free Document-Shredding Days
As a thank you to our customers, Western Disposal is partnering with
Shred-It, a document destruction company, to offer three free shredding
days again in 2011.
Our three event dates will be:
➤ Sunday, June 12th
➤ Sunday, August 14th
➤ Sunday, October 9th
9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Event location: Western Disposal’s Trash and Recycle Center
5880 Butte Mill Road, Boulder
We have scheduled our shredding event on Sundays, when we are
normally closed, so that we are not competing with the traffic of our own
equipment and the public bringing in trash, recyclables, yard waste and
wood waste. Dean Pajevic and Julie Poppen.
Bring your confidential materials such as tax returns, medical forms, bank
statements, etc., for safe and secure destruction.
Volume limit: 5 copy boxes or 32-gallon bags
weighing no more than 35 lbs each
No separating required
Clips and staples are okay
Folders, notebooks and binders are okay
No phonebooks, catalogs, magazines will be accepted
No electronic media will be accepted—paper only!
This is a free shredding event of confidential materials; other recyclables
are not accepted. The event is open to Western Disposal customers only
as an appreciation for your business and your loyalty. Our events are not
open to the general public and non-Western customers.
Our event partner, Shred-It, was founded in 1988 and has more than 130
branches on five continents and is one of the world’s leading document
destruction companies. For document destruction done right and at your
site in the Boulder area, just call Shred-It at 303-293-9170.

Gary Fager. Western will rinse out your containers
each time we provide service.
The city of Boulder has a rebate program that will help pay for this
service. The City will rebate $2.50 per cubic yard toward the cost of
compost collection service, which will show as a credit on your monthly
invoice.
Western operates its own composting facility, and our finished “Green
’N Grow” compost, made from your yard waste/food waste and your
Disposal and the weight reported is for the
the individual materials.
Mixed trash and construction recyclables are
sorted at Western Disposal, and the weight
reported is the total weight of the contents.
The city of Boulder and Boulder County will
allow a 65% diversion calculation with this
service (this service is not allowed under a
LEED certification project).
Both the city of Boulder and Boulder County
will allow mixing of construction trash and
recyclables for sorting at a registered facility.
Western Disposal’s Trash and Recycle Center
is a registered facility.
What materials
can be recycled
Appliances (non-freon)
Cardboard
Cedar shake shingles
Clean wood: dimensional
lumber, plywood and OSB
(no primed, painted or
treated lumber, no siding)
Concrete
Scrap metal
Wire
Yard waste
Important Notes
1) To facilitate the sorting of mixed construction recyclables or mixed trash
and construction recyclables, all projects must be deconstructed by hand
and placed into containers without being attached to any other type of
material. Drywall must be removed from 2x4’s, shingles and siding must be
removed from sheathing, etc. Nails are okay. Projects cannot be taken
down with mechanical equipment and then placed into the containers
without first deconstructing the materials by hand.
2) Concrete in more than a nominal amount can only be recycled in 12-cubicyard
roll-offs to avoid exceeding legal weight limits. Typically, 10 cubic
yards of broken up concrete will equal the 10-ton contents weight limit for
a roll-off vehicle.
