Campus Best Practice
Task Objective
Address key challenges for the European campus networks
Important areas of focus:
– Physical infrastructure
– Campus network
– Wireless infrastructure
– IP Telephony and SIP
– and more…
Network challenges on campus
Challenge NRENs to reinforce their national efforts
The NREN should be a fascilitator that stimulates collaboration
between the ”campus guys” at the university level and with the
NREN itself
Get working groups up and running
Provide an evolving and to-the-point set of best-practice
documents for the community.
Earnest Report on Campus Issues
Published January 2008
52 recommendations regarding issues on campus
Very congruent with the Campus Best
Practice work plan
Recommendation #12:
“Strengthen the collaboration between
National Research and Education Networking
organisations and institutions to improve the
deployment of key services”
Better synchronization of national research
networking and campus issues is essential for
viable end-to-end services.
Existing campus infrastructure is inspected
by GigaCampus. Reports/improvement lists
with estimated costs are produced.
Telephony and SIP
UNINETT has a long tradition of coordinating telephony in the HE sector
Three platforms: Alcatel, Ericsson (Astra), Nortel (Avaya)
Common procurements
Contracts for maintenance and software upgrades
Contract for telephony traffic
Campus Best Practice
Areas of Focus
The task team have defined 9 areas of focus:
1. Basic infrastructure
2. AV (audio visuals)
3. LAN infrastructure and IPv6
4. Light path service
5. Wireless
6. Network monitoring
7. SIP and IP telephony
8. Security
9. Procurement
GN3/NA3/T4 Working Groups
In GN3 Year 1 a number of national working groups have been setup:
The Czech republic
– IP Telephony
– Network monitoring
– IPv6
Finland
– Mobility
– Network / light paths
– Network monitoring
Serbia
– Physical infrastructure
–
– Network monitoring
– Security
Norway
– GigaCampus working
groups
The working groups have a leader
Participants from the NREN and from the universities
the ”national experts” within the field
Working groups will:
organize workshops and meetings on the national level
produce Best Practice Document (in the local language)
connect • communicate • collaborate

Best Practice Documents (BPDs)
The process of writing BPDs have started in all countries
The working group drafts a document
A hearing period will result in suggestions to improvements
Finally the BPD will reach status as a national, Higher Education,
approved document.
Initial
version
English Translations
As nationally approved documents mature they will be translated to
English and published at the TERENA web site
UNINETT has so far translated 10 BPDs to English
CESNET has (soon) translated 4 documents to English
FUNET and AMRES will follow
Examples of available BPDs
Physical infrastructure (UNINETT / Norway)
Requirements for generic cabling systems
Requirements for the design of ICT rooms
Power Supply Requirements for ICT Room
Ventilation and Cooling Requirements for ICT Rooms
Fire Protection Requirements for ICT Rooms
Campus network (CESNET / The Czech Republic)
