Before and after
Islip hamlet’s Stephan Weiss, 17, raised $1,864.46 during a St.Baldrick’s event, where people have their heads shaved to raise money to fight cancer, at
Jim Brady’s in New York City earlier this month.
Developing the hamlet’s future from its past
Civic causes advanced by the Central Islip Civic Council
By JEFFREY BESSEN
CENTRAL ISLIP — The 5-acre spread that hosts
the Central Islip Civic Council’s headquarters is a
microcosm of where the hamlet has been and where
it is going.
Not only does the site feature the old-time blacksmith
building of Henry Heines and a replica of the
hamlet’s first one-room schoolhouse, but it also
boasts an organic garden that aids the Civic Council’s
food pantry and a two-family house, which is an
example of that current buzzword: affordable housing.
Nancy Manfredonia, who for the past 20 years has
We Hope You
Never Need Us.
But We Are Ready
If You Do!
seen her community evolve, heads the 42-year-old
organization. Other groups, such as the Central Islip
Historical Society and the Tri-Hamlet Alliance, also
take up the renaissance banner.
“We have dedicated board members who have
done a lot with a little and it has been a privilege to
serve,” Manfredonia said.
Originally, the Civic Council had no staff during the
first half of its existence, Manfredonia said. But, as
the group became more heavily involved in Islip
Town housing initiatives, the need for part-time and
full-time employees grew to where there are a total of
16 staffers mainly part-timers and some full-time
employees, she said.
The property at 68 Wheeler Road also reminds visitors
that Long Island was a farming community as a
number of different fruit trees dots the grounds,
along with a pair of sheep.
But, not to get shorn by the economic changes,
Manfredonia’s organization has partnered with Islip
Town and other elected officials in an attempt to
move the hamlet forward.
She also points out that a lot has been accomplished—mostly
on the Carleton Avenue Corridor—
and a lot more needs to be accomplished, especially
taking on a Bay Shore-like restoration of Central
This parcel, the former projected site of an aquarium, on Fourth Avenue in Bay Shore is targeted for 40 affordable housing
units.
IB/Bessen
Going fishing for affordable housing
Town slated to transfer land for residential units
By JEFFREY BESSEN
BAY SHORE — Land once targeted
for the housing of fish and other
marine life is now slated to be home to
at least 40 humans as Islip Town is
scheduled to hold a public hearing
regarding the land transfer of a parcel
for affordable housing.
The public hearing is scheduled for
the town board meeting on Wednesday,
April 9 at 2 p.m. in Islip Town Hall
at 655 Main Street. A proposed transfer
is expected to take place between the
town and the Nassau/Suffolk Partnership
Housing Development Fund Company,
Inc.
This property, presently zoned as a
Downtown Development District, is
where a proposed aquarium was
thought to have been located at 92
Fourth Avenue on a site adjacent to the
old Vitagraph Building, which is now
The Loft apartment building.
Following the fold up of the aquarium
idea, Islip Town assembled a blue
ribbon committee nearly three years
ago to determine what to do with the
parcel. It was comprised of individuals
from the town’s Community Development
Agency (CDA), Hauppaugebased
Long Island Housing Partnership
(LIHP), and the Greater Bay Shore
Chamber of Commerce, Northrop-
Grumman and area churches.
Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan
has announced an agreement that will
lead to an increase in the safe disposal
of hazardous waste by allowing
Islip Town residents to drop-off their
household hazardous waste at the
town’s multi-purpose waste facility
each week.
Prior to the plan, residents’ only
opportunity to dispose of household
hazardous waste was during the
town’s twice a year “Stop Throwing
Out Pollutants (STOP)” day.
“This plan will be more convenient,
and because of that I am convinced it
will increase the amount of hazardous
waste that is disposed of properly.
Beginning this spring, once the necessary
permits are in place, Islip Town
“Both the town planning department
and Community Development Agency
have determined that this is the best
use of the land for a number of reasons,”
said Paul Fink, director of the
CDA.
Fink noted that housing in the Bay
Shore area will support the continued
revitalization of the downtown, which
has undergone a renaissance in the
past 12 years under the direction of the
chamber and the Business Improvement
District.
Smart growth principles of being
close to shopping and mass transportation
are met, he added. In addition, a
citizens advisory committee was commissioned
by the CDA and the LIHP
that was given a voice in the configuration
of a project that also borders
Mechanicville Road, Park Avenue and
an existing building on its north side.
Approximately 40 affordable housing
units are expected to be constructed
and all of the residences are anticipated
to be owner-occupied, according to
Fink. Twenty units are reserved for
families earning less than 80 percent of
the median family income for a family
of four on Long Island.
The other 20 residences will be
reserved for families earning between
80 and 120 percent of the median family
income. Presently, that median family
income stands at $97,100, according
residents can drop off their hazardous
waste 52 times per year instead of just
twice a year during STOP days in September
and April,” Nolan said, adding
that his long-term goal is to create a
permanent household hazardous
waste storage system.
This year’s Spring STOP day will be
held on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The supervisor will continue
to host two town-wide STOP days,
even after the plan to create a permanent
household hazardous waste storage
facility has been implemented.
Hazardous waste that will be collected
during this year’s STOP day
includes: aerosol cans, air conditioning
refrigerants, anti-freeze, automotive
fluids, bug and rodent killers,
to Fink.
Currently the land is not on the tax
rolls, but will be placed back on the tax
rolls following completion of construction
and sale of the units to first-time
home owners, Fink said.
“The town will receive approximately
one million dollars in revenue as a
subsidy to help keep the units affordable,”
he said. “This is a not-for-profit
venture.”
Also scheduled as a public hearing
on April 9 is the deletion of a portion of
Gibson Road in Bay Shore as an excess
right-of-way adjacent to the proposed
Pace Cove condominium project that
fronts Maple Avenue. Pace Cove is
anticipated to be an upscale 57-unit,
three-story complex.
To delete a section of a road, a survey
must be conducted and a legal description
of the street must be generated,
according to Planning Commissioner
Gene Murphy.
Gibson Street will remain an open
roadway and there will be no modification
of the width of the road on any
town maps. The only portion affected
is the excess property.
“The deletion of the right-of-way will
not only help to facilitate the redevelopment
of the blighted Dr. King
Hospital site, but will also provide a
greater setback and buffer area,”
Murphy said. ■
Plans to increase household
hazardous waste disposal
chemistry kits, drain cleaners,
deodorizers, driveway sealant, e-
waste, fertilizers with herbicides, fluorescent
bulbs, gasoline, household
batteries, laundry products, medicines,
oil-based paint, oven cleaners,
paint thinner, pet
cleaners, photographic chemicals,
polish and wood preservatives,
propane tanks (empty), upholstery
cleaners, spot removers, thermometers,
thermostats, unused flammable
liquids, used motor oil and weed
killers.
Residents will be notified when the
program begins, and may contact the
town of Islip Department of Environmental
Control at 224-5640 with questions
or concerns. ■
Helping military families soldier on
Town and airline help loved ones to visit deploying infantry
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
RONKONKOMA — Islip Town
Councilman Gene Parrington worked
with Southwest Airlines to provide
tickets for soldiers’ families to Fort
Bragg, North Carolina to visit with
their loved ones in the 69th Infantry
before their deployment to
Afghanistan on Thursday.
Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan
and Parrington were joined by Rep.
Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) and County
Executive Steve Levy to host a Seeingoff
Ceremony for the Families of the
Fighting 69th at Long Island
MacArthur Airport, that began
approximately 45 minutes later than
scheduled due to an accident on Veterans
Memorial Highway Tuesday
morning.
Nolan appointed Parrington, a decorated
Vietnam War veteran, as the
town liaison for Veterans Affairs, and,
along with Beth Delli-Pizzi, president
of the Long Island Fighting 69th Family
Readiness Group (LIFRG), whose
husband is a lieutenant in the unit, has
organized a food pantry for the Fighting
69th with a drop-off point at town
hall, as well as a Seniors to Soldiers
program, and other endeavors.
Delli-Pizzi is the “middleman” who
brought to the town’s attention the
fact that the fighting 69th families
needed help garnering tickets. A combat
Vietnam veteran with two purple
hearts, Parrington knows the trials
war can put people through.
Islip Town and Southwest Airlines partnered to send family and friends to visit
the soldiers of the Fighting 69th in North Carolina before they deploy. Rep.
Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) is left of the Southwest banner, with Councilman Gene
Parrington and Supervisor Phil Nolan on the right.
IB/Portoghese
“I put together today’s ceremony for
the families of the Fighting 69th
because in the town of Islip when we
say support our troops, we mean support
our families as well,” Parrington
said. “As a combat Vietnam veteran, I
will continue to do everything I can to
make the lives of these heroic families,
and of all our veterans, a little bit
easier.”
Also present at the ceremony were
representatives from American Legion
Posts in East Islip (Post 635), Islip
(Post 411), Ronkonkoma (Post 155),
and Central Islip (Post 1039), and a
bagpiper who played a beautiful medley
of patriotic tunes before and after
the ceremony.
Levy delivered a brief but moving
speech discussing the significance of
supporting the soldiers and their
loved ones. “They’re not from a movie,
not a video, these soldiers are sons,
brothers, husbands, and even mothers,”
Levy said.
Israel shared that he spent last
Thanksgiving in Afghanistan, not
because he wanted to see the country,
but because he wanted to send a message
to the soldiers.
“It is important for them to know
that they have the support they need
from the government,” Israel said.
Both Israel and Levy echoed that the
soldiers must know that people are
working with their families at home to
help them if they need assistance.
Israel also stated proudly that he
introduced a resolution that unanimously
passed in the House of Representatives
on March 13 honoring the
Fighting 69th. That announcement
garnered applause from the appreciative
audience.
Southwest Airlines representative
Stephanie Schaller spoke over the
microphone just before the families
were about to board their flight.
“Southwest Airlines is honored to support
the families of the Fighting 69th
and provide flight accommodations
for the families so they can visit with
their loved ones,” said Schaller. “It
means a lot to Southwest to be a part
of Long Island’s community and give
back to the armed forces.” ■
Honoring those who died in service
Memorial for fallen heroes is unveiled
By JEFFREY BESSEN
Islip Bulletin - March 27, 2008
BRENTWOOD — In the same week that has
marked the fifth year of the Iraqi War a memorial
honoring six fallen soldiers was unveiled by Assemblyman
Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) outside his Suffolk
Avenue district office.
This Fallen Heroes Memorial commemorates the
ultimate sacrifice paid by a half-dozen young men
from the North Bay Shore and Brentwood communities
in Iraq and Afghanistan, including Pfc. Raheen
Heighter, the first Long Islander to lose his life in
Iraq, and his fellow Army Pfcs. Jacob Fletcher and
Jose Ruiz, along with Sgt. Michael Esposito, Marine
Cpl. Ramon Mateo and Senior Air Force Airman Paul
Hawkes Jr.
The memorial was unveiled not that far from the
marker that denotes the street as Lt. David Halderman
Way. Halderman was a Brentwood native who
was one of the 343 firefighters to lose their lives in
the Twin Towers on Sept. 11.
“Today is a day of profound sadness and also a day
of profound pride,” said Ramos, who noted that the
soldiers are owed a debt of gratitude for what they
did; “putting the nation first and … our needs over
their own wants.”
It was a day of remembrance and a little bit of vindication
as Ruiz’s parents were awarded their son’s
New York State Conspicuous Cross, which Ramos
noted was finally received after cutting through government
red tape. The Conspicuous Service Cross is
a decoration for military service awarded by the state
to members of the military who have also been
awarded one of 22 medals from the military, including
the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star
and several distinguished decorations from any of
the military branches.
But despite the shadow of sorrow that appears to
envelope events such as these, there existed a celebration
of these young men’s lives and especially that
people took the time to remember them.
“I just wanted to thank Phil Ramos and others for
A Fallen Heroes Memorial was unveiled outside Assemblyman Phil Ramos’s (D-Central Islip) office on
Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood commemorating the lives of six area soldiers.
IB/Bessen
remembering Jacob and all our loves ones,” said
Dorine Kennedy, Fletcher’s mother. “It is over four
years and you are still thinking of him. I could ask for
no more.”
As the number of fallen soldiers in the Iraqi War
climbed above 4,000 this past Sunday, there are many
Gold Star mothers with the same thought and those
who will have those thoughts.
Dawn Esposito, the mother of Michael, noted that
the designation Gold Star mothers, women who have
lost their sons and now their daughters in military
service, was established on June 4, 1925.
Esposito said that she counts these mothers and
fathers and others as part of her extended family,
including Ramos, to whom she gave a gold coin, a
military tradition that dates to World War I to prove
that soldier belongs to a specific unit.
“In memory of our fallen sons … these young men
from Brentwood,” Esposito said.
Ramos noted that the deaths of these young men
and the remembrances have raised the consciousness
of the community regarding what it is these
young men have done.
“We as a nation can never fully pay back the sacrifices
you have made,” said County Legislator Ricardo
Montano (D-Central Islip) addressing the soldiers’
parents. “We will never forget the sacrifices you have
made.” ■

A lifetime of memories accrues
Eleanor King Ackerson turns 100 years young
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
Eleanor King Ackerson will celebrate her 100th birthday surrounded by her family
on Sunday, April 6.
BRIGHTWATERS — During the
last century, wars, the Great Depression
and technology have changed the
world, and Eleanor King Ackerson
has been around to see it all.
Ackerson was born in 1908 and was
raised in Islip hamlet. She will celebrate
her hundredth birthday on Sunday,
April 6. The youngest of four siblings,
Ackerson had two sisters and
one brother. A 1926 graduate of Islip
High School, Ackerson went on to get
a bachelor’s degree in education from
SUNY New Paltz and began a teaching
career in Baldwin.
Although she enjoyed teaching,
Ackerson got married and started a
new career as a housewife; she settled
into a home in Islip with her husband,
H. (Henry) Ward Ackerson. The
Ackerson’s had two sons, Richard and
Bart, who grew up through the Islip
School District as well. Nearly 20
years ago, Eleanor and Henry moved
to Brightwaters.
H. Ward Ackerson passed away in
1998 at the age of 96; living a long life
seems to run in this family’s genes, as
does business. Ackerson’s younger
son, Bart, carries on the family business
as a third generation real estate
broker in the building his grandfather,
Henry Ward Ackerson, had built in
1906 on Montauk Highway at the head
of the Brightwaters Canal.
In 2001, Ackerson’s 75th high school
reunion fell at the same time as her
son Bart’s 50th reunion; they both
went, but Eleanor was the only person
present from her graduating
class.
Bart Ackerson has no idea how his
mother has gotten this far, and his
brother Richard, an ex-Islip Fire
Chief, chalks it up to her humor.
“She’s always been a fun person,”
Richard said. “She just refuses to get
old.”
Ackerson broke her hip at 97, and
has never quite bounced back from
the injury. Yet she still is able to walk
a little bit and, though she may be
hard of hearing, she has her wits
about her.
“My mother lived for us,” Bart said.
“Her main priority was to provide for
us and take care of us.”
Richard noted that no matter what,
his mother always had a nice car
because she loved driving. He remembers
her taking him and his brother
up to Albany for camping trips and
driving them into the city where they
would take boat trips upstate.
The family had a summer home in
Saltaire on Fire Island, and Richard
shared that his mother loved accompanying
her kids down to the beach
where they all would hunt for remnants
of sunken ships that would
wash up to shore.
Living to 100 is an amazing feat, but
there are many hardships along the
way. Ackerson has lost all of her
friends and relatives, except for her
sons and their families. Richard
recalled that sometimes she does not
feel as if she is understood.
“She’s told us that she hopes we live
to 107 so we would know what it’s
like to live past many loved ones,” he
said.
Nevertheless, Ackerson is excited
to be celebrating her 100th year on
Earth during a family celebration at
her home on her birthday. She has
seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren,
and is anxiously awaiting
the arrival of her first great-greatgrandchild
in May. ■
Recognizing the accomplishments of women
Town fetes six to highlight Women’s History Month
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
ISLIP — In an annual event, the town of Islip held
its Women’s History Celebration at Town Hall last
week to pay tribute to the local women who are making
a difference in the community.
Those being honored at the Wednesday event included:
Ashley Graf, a violinist who has played with the
“Irish Tenors;” Evelyn Blose-Holman, superintendent
of the Bay Shore School District; Dr. Leigh Ann
Hutchinson of Southside Hospital in Bay Shore; Winnie
Mack, executive director of Southside Hospital;
Marguerite Tanner, a volunteer peer counselor at the
town’s Hotline; and Rachel Wiener, a social worker at
Central Islip High School.
Along with recognizing those women, Supervisor
Phil Nolan presented a special proclamation to the
Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. Evelyn Blose-Holman,
who was honored for her efforts to forge a positive
relationship between local business and school districts
through the Bay Shore Community Summit, was
very happy to be credited by the town.
“To be recognized by the town of Islip is a special
honor and one that I am compelled to share with the
schools and community,” Holman said. “Working
together as a team to affect positive changes is a highly
important and rewarding endeavor.”
Recognized for the positive impact she has had on
patient care through aesthetic improvements she has
made to the facility, executive director of Southside
Hospital, Winnie Mack, noted that the hospital is committed
to being the best community hospital on Long
Island and she is happy to work where she does.
“I have had the privilege of working with the town
officials and know how exceptionally fortunate we are
to call the town of Islip our home,” Mack said. “I am
proud to be a recipient of the town of Islip Women’s
History Month Award and to be sharing this award
with such a prestigious group of women.”
Dr. Hutchinson excels in the highly male-dominated
Islip Town honored five women who live or work in the town as part of Women’s History Month. From left in
front are: Marguerite Tanner, Winnie Mack, Evelyn Blose-Holman, Rachel Wiener and Dr. Leigh Ann Hutchinson.
In back from left are: Councilman Chris Bodkin, Town Clerk Regina Duffy, Supervisor Phil Nolan and
Councilmen Steve Flotteron and Gene Parrington.
field of Electrophysiology, which is a sub specialty of
cardiology. She was recognized for her professional
accomplishments and for dedicating herself to inspiring
young people to further their education.
“I’m very honored that the town gave this award to
me,” Dr. Hutchinson said. “These events are helpful.
Hopefully those people that are discouraged can
understand that if you have passion, your goals are
achievable.”
There are challenges in a work environment for
women that men do not always experience, and only
the women who go through it understand, Dr. Hutchinson
noted.
Nolan was appreciative of the role women play in
the community. He thinks it is important to honor the
contributions these women have made to their field,
and to recognize them for paving the way for the
future.
“The six individuals recognized at our Women’s History
Celebration serve as positive role models,” Nolan
said. “They demonstrate the importance of striving for
success to young women everywhere.” ■

Grant money
Education Chair Naomi Taub from the Archaeological Institute of
America, Long Island Society presented Librarian Phyllis M. Simon,
from the Brook Avenue School Library in the Bay Shore School
District with a $400 grant for a proposal she wrote for her secondgrade
students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Library System
(SLS) Liaison meeting.
The students will create a “time box or capsule” reflecting artifacts
that might be found this year, to be opened (by another group) in ten
years. “By creating artifacts and then excavating them 10 years later,
students learn much about the concept of the past and the work of an
archaeologist,” Simon said.
Simon accepts the $400 grant from Taub at the meeting, hosted by
Gail Barraco, administrative coordinator for the SLS. ■
Long Island MacArthur Airport officials and taxicab owners, managers and drivers met on Monday in attempt to resolve a few recurring issues.
By JEFFREY BESSEN
RONKONKOMA — A three-point
turn from Long Island MacArthur Airport
(LIMA) Islip Town’s new airport
commissioner, Teresa Rizzuto, Councilman
Gene Parrington and several
owners, managers and drivers discussed
issues of safety and decorum
on Monday.
In an approximately 75-minute meeting
in the intimately sized Holbrook
Room of the Ronkonkoma Holiday
Inn, the groups decided to open communication
by holding a monthly
meeting where representatives of the
taxicab companies that serve LIMA
will air their concerns with town officials.
Though some came out of the gettogether
looking unimpressed with
what was discussed, others said that
the town is attempting to address the
issues. “They are trying to solve the
problems at the airport,” said Bob
Piracci, a manager for Islandia-based
Lindy’s Taxi. “There will be additional
A lively livery discussion
Town officials and cab owners and drivers meet
meetings.”
Rizzuto, who was named to the post
in January, emerged from the room
after also huddling with other LIMA
officials and current Deputy Commissioner
Eric Hofmeister, who served as
acting commissioner following the
retirement of Al Werner.
Though pricing was not discussed—
Rizzuto noted it was a non-starter as
taxi companies set their own prices—
what was discussed, she said, was that
the guidelines regarding the taxi drivers’
behavior will be reiterated and
monitored.
It appears drivers are jumping ahead
of each other in line for customers and
this behavior ratchets up resentment
between drivers to where the situation
could explode.
Rizzuto said that Hofmeister suggested
the formation of a Taxi-Livery Committee
comprised of town officials and
the taxicab drivers, managers and
owners, where concerns can be aired
and issues will be addressed.
“I like all these guys,” said Rizzuto,
who has gotten to know the drivers in
her short stint as commissioner with
her parking stall located near the taxis.
“They are good, hard-working people.”
Previous complaints revolved
around the fact that taxis not specifically
called for a pickup at the airport
charged a minimum of $30—and that
stands even if a passenger was going
across the street. And it is $5 for each
additional passenger.
Those passengers that did not have a
cab reservation must hike across the
parking lot to the “taxi line” located
adjacent to the rental car companies.
Under current LIMA regulations only
taxis that were called can provide
curbside pickup.
Another issue that Rizzuto said she
would address is the presence of taxis
that are not registered at the airport
cruising the grounds and stealing passengers
from the primary companies
that service LIMA.
“We’ll investigate it and do what we
have to do to fix it,” she said.
One driver, who did not want his
named used, confirmed that is a big
problem. That same driver noted that
due to the $30 minimum, he has had 10
consecutive potential patrons reject
his service.
“Twenty dollars used to be the magic
figure,” he said, “people would pay
that, but not $30 or more. We want it to
be competitive and fair to the public.
He said he keeps a copy of a previous
Islip Bulletin article in a manila
folder to show patrons that the
upscale price is not set by him individually.
In the article it was noted that the
town might put out an RFP (Request
for Proposal), giving only one company
access to the airport, and the town’s
possibilities for expanded regulation
and oversight. But Rizzuto said that is
not a road she wants to venture down
now.
“Everybody was sincere and open
and we are moving forward in the right
direction,” said Parrington, who noted
that the town is attempting to be “fair
and equitable to everybody.” ■
Whether you and your pet are at
home or out for a daily walk, potentially
toxic substances are everywhere
and sometimes all too tempting and
tasty for curious pets.
From sugar-free gum to common
household plants, top toxins are everyday
items you may never suspect and
can cause serious illnesses and even
death in pets. To honor National Poison
Prevention Week 2008, specialty
veterinarians from New York City Veterinary
Specialists offer useful advice
on how to keep pets poison-free yearround.
“As an emergency veterinarian, I
receive an abundance of calls about
dogs and cats that have eaten something
suspicious. Naturally, this causes
pet owners to panic. We’ve actually
found that what people think will be
most harmful, may not be. Surprisingly,
it’s been the least suspected household
items, like sugar-free gum, that
may be most harmful,” says Dr. David
Bessler, a Senior Emergency Clinician
at NYC Veterinary Specialists in Manhattan.
So, how can pet parents know what’s
harmless and what isn’t
According to The American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,
in 2007, the ASPCA’s Animal Poison
Control Center (APCC) in Urbana,
Ill. managed more than 130,000 cases.
People everywhere called the APCC’s
24-hour hotline with both emergency
and non-emergency inquiries.
Top poisoning cases reported consisted
of the following common household
goods and products:
1. Prescription Drugs: With approximately
89,000 calls received, medications
such as painkillers, cold and flu
preparations and antidepressants
topped the list. According to Dr. Benjamin
Davidson, a critical care specialist
at NYC Veterinary Specialists, “Pet
owners often make the mistake of giving
human medications to their pets.
Some of the common pain relievers
used in people are actually toxic to
cats and dogs or need to be dosed differently.
I recommend that all pet owners
check with their family veterinarian
before giving any medications to
their pets.”
2. Bug and Pest Control Products:
“Some poisons and bait products give
off a smell that often lures pets. This is
why they work so well on rats and other
pests. They can even be sweet to the
taste. Pets are drawn to these substances
and are curious about them,”
Dr. Bessler said.
“We have seen a number of cases of
poisonings of illegally imported toxins
disguised as brown grains. These
harmful toxins are used to kill rodents
and cockroaches. The actual chemical
is called Aldicarb and causes neurologic,
gastrointestinal and occasionally
cardiac issues. When they are used,
they should be hidden from pets. If
your pet does consume some of this
toxin, please contact your family veterinarian
immediately. Prompt treatment
can be lifesaving,” Dr. Davidson
said.
3. Common Household Plants & Seasonal
Plants: According to the APCC,
In 2007, common household plants
such as lilies, azaleas and kalanchoe,
were the subject of more than 8,000
calls to the poison center. Rhododendron,
sago palm, and schefflera plants
also make the list. “Be sure to keep
Easter lilies and Tulips away from
pets, especially from cats,” says Dr.
Bessler. “Lilies are considered to be
highly toxic to cats. Even in small
amounts they can produce life-threatening
kidney failure, even if they
ingest just a tiny amount.” Tulips contain
toxins, which can cause intense
gastrointestinal irritation, drooling,
loss of appetite, depression of the central
nervous system, convulsions and
CENTRAL ISLIP from page 10
Islip’s main drag: Suffolk Avenue.
A recreational community center is
slated to be constructed on Clayton
Street, which is a side street off of Carleton
Avenue in the downtown area,
and within the past two years, developers
fees have gone to beginning
downtown improvements, that
includes having a downtown coordinator
(John Dowling), regular cleanups
and seasonal decorations.
“Most significantly was the requirement
for the profit developers going
for permits to contribute $250,000 to
downtown funds as the permits come
in,” said Gene Murphy, the town’s planning
commissioner.
Murphy noted that the implementation
of the downtown coordinator, the
use of a water truck, and the utilization
of free Department of Labor workforce
has helped Dowling to maintain
a cleaner community.
Like Manfredonia, Murphy also sees
blighted lots and existing structures
that could be upgraded, but the planning
commissioner said that occasionally
one bumps into unresponsive
landlords.
“In the big picture, it is definitely
cleaner and people are happy with the
streetscape,” Murphy said.
In the past several years, a variety of
residential development have been
constructed, including College Woods,
Coventry Village, Courthouse Commons,
and Islip Landing.
Akin to dominoes as the commercial
and residential construction began it
begat more from the John P. Cohalan
Court Complex to Citibank Park
The headquarters of the 42-year-old
Central Islip Civic Council demonstrates
the past, present and future of the community.
At right: A piece of American
history.
IB/Bessen
(where the Long Island Ducks minor
league baseball team plays) in 2000, to
a huge shopping center that features a
visual appealing pond with a waterfall
and many stores.
Through Assemblyman Phil Ramos
(D-Central Islip), the Tri-Hamlet Group
and working with Bill Mannix, director
of the town’s Economic Development
department, the Civic Council has
applied specifically for downtown
grants, along with three different grant
possibilities for a visioning process.
“We have general idea of what we
want, we need the nitty gritty,” Manfredonia
said. “We have to come up
with a vision for Central Islip.”
Manfredonia seeks to also upgrade
the “walkability” of the hamlet and
transportation is expected to receive a
boost when a trolley, purchased by the
Civic Council, is used, running every
20 to 25 minutes in a continuous loop
from the courts, to the shopping center,
the rail road station and the new
community center.
The Civic Council provides its community
with multiple programs,
including a “Step
Back in Time” that supplies
schoolchildren with
an opportunity to experience
life on a turn-of-thecentury
(19th to 20th)
homestead.
That type of vision—
looking back, while looking
ahead—is the basis of
the group’s mission of
“improving the quality of
life for all residents of
Central Islip.”
The town’s master plan
process has been a good
one for the hamlet, Manfredonia
said. Despite
some tough times, she
notes that her community’s
problems are not
much different than
those of the rest of Long
Island.
“With all this effort, I
see a bright future for Central Islip,”
Manfredonia said. ■
Eating up hamlet history
Restaurant Week kicks off tricentennial party
By JEFFREY BESSEN
BAY SHORE — As this hamlet by
the Great South Bay begins to celebrate
its 300th birthday this year,
stoves and ovens in area restaurants
will heat up with a kick-off event.
“Restaurant Week in Bay Shore” is
slated for Tuesday, April 1 through
Thursday, April 10 with 19 participating
restaurants offering prix fixe menus
denoting 1708, the year of Bay Shore’s
founding to the present year of 2008.
Following the community’s renaissance
from vacant, blighted buildings
to a vibrant, connected civic presence,
eateries offering a variety of culinary
choices have taken root on Main
Street, Union Boulevard and on the
waterfront.
“When you suggest something, you
become the chair to organize the
event,” John Valdini said jokingly, as
he and his brother Brian, who operates
the restaurant fatfish, are the co-chairs
for this tasty tricentennial promotion.
In cooperation with the Chamber of
Commerce of Greater Bay Shore, the
Valdinis have lined up the eateries that
are as varied as Tula Kitchen, which
will highlight its almond crusted chicken
with apricot sauce, according to
owner Jackie Sharlup, to the ferry-side
Chowder Bar whose soup was voted
best on Long Island by News12 viewers,
according to owner Pat Robinson.
“Give the customer what they want,”
Robinson said was her secret to the
restaurant’s 20-year success on Maple
Avenue. She also hopes that the promotion
attracts new patrons and generates
expanded exposure for the
eatery.
Valdini said that having the restaurant
owners get out of their kitchens
and meet each other was the fun part
of pulling this together. “Everybody
worked together and is looking forward
to it.”
He noted that it is important for the
restaurateurs to know what is in their
said Valdini, who is hoping this could
become an annual event under the
Chamber’s guidance.
Sharlup is also planning to highlight
the coconut crusted taipia and a vegetarian
dish of tempeh teriyaki over
basmati rice at her 41 East Main Street
restaurant. She also hopes that this
event can be carried over through the
years.
“I am a big fan of Bay Shore, for a
long time,” she said. “Not many towns
get involved as we do. We help each
other and you know who your friends
Islip Bulletin - March 27, 2008
EDITORIAL
Transparent
means
transparent
Out from under another scandal, school
districts need—really need—to be open
and transparent so their constituencies
(hard working taxpayers that cannot
raise capital by raising someone else’s
taxes) can know where the money is
going.
Toward this goal, SchoolWatch, a growing
nationwide grassroots organization
that has trained its eyes on school districts,
is calling for New York State school
districts to do what 163 districts in 14
states have already done: Putting district
documents online for the whole world to
see.
Yes, a novel idea. Open up the ivory tower
and create a looking glass kind of feel,
where what the school districts are doing
with taxpayer money is open for complete
inspection.
Faxes and e-mails have begun to be
delivered to local districts and elected
representatives letting them know that
the ball is now in their court, but the public
needs to know.
Some may say this could be a legal disaster
waiting to happen, but the fourth
largest school district in the nation—Miami-Dade—did
it in February and placed
its check register online; more than 6,500
pages of payments in alphabetical order
by vendor for all the world to see.
This is what transparency is. Not that
one day a district allows people to see a
crack in the keyhole. But the entire inventory
laid bare for taxpayers to review and
question.
Too many questions. But think about it.
If the system is open then the questions
should be easy to answer and explain. It is
all there in black and white and binary
numbers.
Doing this would be an easy stroke
toward transparency as it permits school
districts the luxury of accountability if all
their “t”s are crossed and “i”s dotted. If
the punctuation is improper, then finding
the rotten apple should not be that difficult
either.
SchoolWatch is calling for a legislative
mandate from the New York State Legislature
for all public school transactions to
put online. Why should the districts wait
for that
School districts should be smart and get
ahead of the curve and show their constituencies
that they know the meaning of
transparency: clearness, lucidity, simplicity
and intelligibility. ■
Reflections of the Past
POINT OF VIEW
An embodying experience
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
Through friends I had heard about this exhibition
where real human bodies are preserved and then dissected
so spectators can get a rare look at our bodies
completely broken down. My boyfriend and I decided
to go see what all the fuss was about this “controversial
exhibit.”
Visiting “Bodies: The Exhibition” at the South Street
Seaport in lower Manhattan was more of a shock than
I had prepared myself for. The exhibit eases into the
gross stuff by first displaying humdrum body parts
such as feet, legs hands and arms with muscles, bones,
and nerves visible in glass cases.
Soon enough though, the exhibit ventures into displaying
the brain completely broken down and quickly
moves on to the intestines, and other places I won’t
mention. The digestive system was referred to as an
efficient disassembly line.
There were several specimens posed performing certain
tasks like pitching a baseball and conducting
music. It was interesting to see what part of your body
is used for activities such as these, but I could not stop
myself from thinking about the people who these bodies
once belonged to.
Imagine if that was what became of your body when
you died I never knew donating your body to science
could possibly mean ending up in an exhibit.
The most controversial section showcased fetuses
that perished while in utero in every stage of development.
As someone who has never been pregnant, this
both fascinated and disgusted me. Pregnancy is an
amazing thing, but as a woman in my early 20s, it
seems freaky and terrifying, akin to something out of
an alien movie.
I think it is important for everyone to try to learn
more about our bodies; maybe the more we become
aware of how our bodies work, the more we will take
care of them.
The exhibit showed a smoker’s lungs compared with
healthy lungs; most people know smoking is bad for
you, but seeing those grayish lungs hopefully encourages
some puffers to break the habit. A glass box was
The New York Telephone
Pioneers sponsored a
special remembrance to
the soldiers of Vietnam
in the fall of 1970 by
collecting and preparing
ditty bags. Telephone
people throughout Suffolk
County contributed
to the Annual Ditty
Bag Project. Howard
Bursch, assistant general
manager for the
Suffolk area, Marge Eve,
council representative
for Suffolk Life and Mary
Tenca of East Islip, president
of the Suffolk
Council Pioneers, are
shown looking over 350
bags that were prepared.
“Bodies: The Exhibition” at the South Street
Seaport in lower Manhattan
available for current smokers to throw their box of
cigarettes into; the box was half-full.
It truly is amazing to see how complex our bodies
are. I never realized how many bits and pieces are
inside of every one of us, and that without just one of
those pieces, not everything works as well as it should.
After the exhibit we had planned on getting a bite to
eat, but preserved bodies with all the insides visible
have a way of killing one’s appetite.
Exhibition” website: http://www.bodiestheexhibition.
The magical language and poetry of China
By YE LI
BRENTWOOD — Ben Wang, the co-chair of Renwen
Society of China Institute, lectured about Chinese
Culture at the Michael J. Grant Campus of Suffolk
County Community College last week.
Tuesday’s lecture was the first big Chinese culture
event held at the college. The administrators of the
Grant Campus attached importance to this event as
Executive Dean Shaun McKay, and the Associate
Dean Sandra Susman Palmer, attended in the event,
with McKay making a welcoming statement.
The Deans, members of the faculty and students
took pictures with the speaker. Suffolk County Community
College is the largest community college in
the New York State.
In recent years, the school has started offering Chinese
courses. As a growing language across the
globe, Chinese has begun to receive more and more
recognition at this college.
Wang is a well-known lecturer, scholar and translator
in the United States, where he has given talks
about Chinese culture for 25 years. He is also one of
the most popular Chinese speakers in the U.S. today.
He has lectured at Yale, Columbia, U.C. Berkeley
and other prestigious universities. He has also given
talks at the National Gallery of Art, the United
Nations, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art and other famous places. For his contributions
to society, the City Council of New York conferred
upon him a citation for being “an outstanding
citizen.”
In his lecture at Suffolk County Community College,
he illustrated the relationship between the
characters, poetry, art, music, and the development
of beauty and art in Chinese literature.
He also made comparisons with Western culture to
give a better understanding of the similarities and differences
between the Western and Eastern civilizations.
This special lecture was a feast for the eyes and
ears of all who were interested in the art of writing,
speaking and culture, and was a greatly welcomed. ■
4. Cleaning Products: Common products
such as bleaches, detergents and
disinfectants can be extremely harmful
for pets. In addition to gastrointestinal
distress, irritation to the skin,
eyes or respiratory tract may be possible
if a pet gets into these types of
products. “Many cleaning products
can cause extreme irritation to the
eyes and even corneal ulceration. This
includes household cleaning products
(bleaches, mopping solutions, counter
top and window sprays) as well as personal
cleaning products (shampoos,
perfumes, lotions). Just as with people,
the eye should be copiously rinsed
with saline (but tap water works in a
pinch) and the pet should be taken to
a veterinarian to look for ulceration,”
says Dr. Jennifer Welser, board certified
veterinary ophthalmologist and
co-medical director of NYC Veterinary
Specialists.
“Always keep the ASPCA Poison
Control Center’s hotline (1-888-426-
4435) and your general veterinarian’s
number handy in case of emergency.
When in doubt, always call your family
veterinarian,” Dr. Bessler said. ■
Islip Bulletin - March 27, 2008
SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS
Boys’ lacrosse is ready to roll
By JEFFREY BESSEN
ISLIP BUCCANEERS
Seeded 11th in the 18-team Division II side of boys’
Suffolk County lacrosse, Islip expects to take its
knocks early and hopefully can deliver return bows
as a “very young team,” according to head coach Keith
Scheidel, improves.
The Buccaneers features three seniors; Chris Riley
and Chris Kmieciak on attack, and Karl Weiss on
defense. Two juniors, David DeBlasio and Alex
Koch, are also on attack.
From there, Scheidel’s squad includes what he
termed a nice mix of seniors, juniors and sophomores,
along with four freshmen and a pair of eighthgraders.
“Our stick skills are pretty good, but we are very
young and the hardest thing to do will be able to survive
our schedule,” said Scheidel, who noted that
four out of Islip’s first half-dozen games are against
top seeds.
Included is the opening league game versus Kings
Park. Last year, the Bucs played a bunch of 1-goal
and overtime games and Scheidel sees a similar scenario,
where his team will not dominate, but will
hand a round and try to squeeze out victory in the
fourth quarter.
“We have only 21 on the roster and we will be playing
18,” Scheidel said. “Everyone will see playing
time and through effort, get better.”
WEST ISLIP LIONS
Yes, that is a bull’s eye on West Islip’s newly
installed FieldTurf playing surface. But it is not there
by accident. Winning the last two state titles and four
consecutive, Class A county titles will do that.
“I guess everyone would love to get a piece of us for
what we have done in the last four-five-six years,” said
head coach Scott Craig. “But that works in our favor
as the bar is set high to achieve and the players have
to put in the extra time to rise to a different level.”
Touro Law Center’s student team
advanced to the final round in the
prestigious 15th annual Willem C. Vis
International Commercial Arbitration
Moot in Vienna, Austria. The competition
included 204 teams comprised of
approximately 1,400 law students from
more than 50 countries around the
world. Team members are Lena Davydan,
Matthew Moisan and Aleksandr
Bespalov.
“This incredible performance
demonstrates both the extraordinary
commitment and talent of Touro Law
students,” said Professor Jack Graves,
faculty coach for the team. “This competition
was a great platform for our
students to prove they are among the
best in the world.”
All 204 teams participated in four
preliminary rounds over the course of
four days, after which the field was
reduced to 64 teams who competed in
elimination rounds for a place on the
final stage in front of almost two thousand
students, arbitrators and law professors
from around the globe.
In reaching this final round, Lena
Davydan and Matt Moisan successfully
prevailed in their oral arguments
The top seeded Class A West Islip Lions seek to “go for three” consecutive state championships as the bell
rings on a new lacrosse season.
File photo
Though the Lions graduated 23 seniors, 21 players
from last season’s championship team return, which
is the primary reason Craig’s squad is top seeded in
Class A.
All-County sophomore attack Nick Galasso leads
the parade of returnees. As a freshman last year,
Galasso notched 103 points, including 53 goals.
Senior attack Ed Plompen was the No. 4 guy at his
position last season, but pumped in 37 goals and
dished out 8 assists.
Senior midfielder Ian Braddish is back. He is good
enough to have orally committed to North Carolina,
Craig said. Sophomore Andrew Hodgson, Chris
against teams from Tubingen, Heidelberg,
Stockholm, NYU, and Victoria
University of Wellington. In a very
close final round, Carlos III (Madrid)
ultimately prevailed, leaving the Touro
team with the second place award—an
outstanding achievement.
“Lena and Matt delivered what I
thought was one of the most outstanding
final round performances I’ve ever
witnessed in the Moot, and their
school, their state, and their country
ought to be very proud of them,”
Graves said.
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial
Arbitration Moot is the largest
and most prestigious private law student
moot in the world. The event was
designed to foster study and increase
global awareness in the areas of international
sales law (focusing on the
United Nations Convention on Contracts
for the Sale of Goods) and international
commercial arbitration
(focusing on the UNCITRAL Model
Law on International Commercial
Arbitration) and also to bring students,
practitioners, and law professors from
around the globe together for a single
event in Vienna.
Each year, the Moot revolves around
a fictional international transaction in
goods, which includes an agreement to
resolve any disputes in arbitration. For
the students, the six-month enterprise
includes the submission of written
memoranda for both Claimant and
Messina (who is headed to Quinnipiac) and fellow
senior Mike Bloom also man the midfield.
John Giglia is the pull middie, and on defense there
are seniors Tom Gordon and Devin Fuhy, and junior
Mike McCormack and Ryan Zaremba in goal. Craig
thinks that the team’s ability to run, its good stick
work and athleticism should cover its lack of physical
size and experience.
“I am thinking of developing and getting better,”
said the coach, who noted that he does enjoy seeing
his players improve. “Every day you can get better or
get worse, but you never stay the same. The only
thing you can control is the effort.” ■
held in Vienna the week before
coaches, the event draws hundreds of
preeminent practitioners and law professors
from around the world to participate
as arbitrators. ■
