Achievements

Shared Achievements
Be Proud, Be South!
When you look at the South High
Foundation timeline below you can see
how much we have achieved since
1983.
We have publications that mail four
times a year, four fundraising events a
year and two ongoing academic
partnerships. We have completed a
successful capital campaign to build the
field house and found a way to
recognize our outstanding alumni. Each
year we give thousands of dollars to
South High for grants and scholarships
—this year over $175,000. And
throughout the economic ups and downs
of the last two decades we have grown
our assets from that first $75.00 to $1.8
million dollars. We are very proud of
those achievements.
South students are achieving too. They
brought home titles, awards, trophies
and medals of all sizes, shapes and
colors last year which represented all
facets of life at South—student
organizations, clubs, academics,
athletics and fine arts. And they weren’t
just one hit wonders—the South
musicians alone brought home 11 of the
highest honors from the National
Competition in Washington, D.C.
South High is a diverse and everchanging
environment. And within that
changing environment the staff is
challenged each day to find innovative
ways to not only sustain, but continually
increase these high rates of
achievement. The Foundation has also
been challenged to grow and adapt with
the needs of the school. We have
embraced this challenge and raised the limits
on our endowment, changed our investments,
increased our scholarships and revised our
policies on funding.
Today we are putting policies in place to
ensure the Foundation will be around long
into the future to continue helping South High
students achieve their goals. These
are the students who will be making
the decisions that shape our country
for future generations. It will take
each and every one of us to meet
our shared goals—invest now,
share the achievements, ensure the
future.
Our Mission
The Mission of the South High Foundation
Treasurer’s report: Bequests carry on the mission
This past year the South High Foundation was
the recipient of several bequests. These bequests
are instrumental in the ability of the Foundation
to continue its mission.
Funds provided by our generous members and
friends, through contributions, bequests and
other venues, enable us to support programs that
provide South High students opportunities to
excel. Bequests are easy to create, providing a
lasting gift to South, and can be designated to
reflect your interests. Please
2012 Annual Report of the South High Foundation Page 4

Grants report: Many programs ongoing
Support needs for public schools have gone
beyond extras. Schools are burdened with
providing triple the level of support for students
compared to twenty years ago. Unfortunately,
available funding has not risen at the same rate
as costs.
Organizations, like the Foundation, work hard
to provide support for any and all programs at
South that provide opportunities challenging
students to grow and prosper as community
members. We promote the school whenever
possible and provide assistance to maintain and
succeed through the South High mission.
Donors may make general donations to the
organization, or they can designate a special
program for their dollars. Many of the programs
in this report are ongoing and will need
sustained future support in order to continue.
Annual membership ($25) helps sustain our
operating fund from which most of our grant
funding originates.
Foundation Grants
Engineering/Entrepreneurship
The Foundation has been sponsoring an
engineering class since 2004 and continues to be
a constructive influence in the class and student
achievements. This year the group acquired a
laser printer which provides students with hands
on experience in design and implementation of
projects. It also enables them to complete some
projects for the school in general. Students learn
the value of a business plan and gain valuable
skills in the process.
Art department
Over five hundred students enroll in the
various visual arts classes provided at
South every year. Providing materials
required for all these students helps to keep
the art courses one of the highest requested
programs in the state.
Open program
Each year 120 Open program freshman make the trek to Eagle
Bluff Environmental Learning Center in December. The experience
provides opportunity for the students to develop positive
relationships with their peers, learn leadership and team building
skills, and enjoy Minnesota habitat and wild life. The program is
built into the curriculum and students actually experience many of
the concepts they are learning in their regular school day.
Page 5

Project Success
Founded in 1994, Project Success is a youthdevelopment
organization that works with
students to develop life-skills that transform their
lives. They develop short-term and long-term
goals, improve attendance and participation and
increase connections with family, teachers and
classmates. Students leave South
with a better understanding of
themselves and a clearer plan
for their future.
Freshman teams
South High is one of the only inner
city schools offering freshmanspecific
athletic teams. These teams
are important to building and
supporting the South High athletics
program. The additional coaches
allow the teams to increase
conditioning and focus on basic
skills and training for all athletes
between seasons.
Ceramics
Kilns and pottery wheels are essential to one of the area’s best ceramics
programs. Denny Sponsler, art teacher, has continued the tradition of high
expectations for these courses, producing award winning artists each year in
both state and national competitions.
Debate
The Minnesota Urban Debate League invested over $10,000
in the South High debate program, which had twenty-five
students involved. Two teams qualified for the National
Forensic League tournament in Indianapolis. Jacob Boucher,
Cole Johnson Jensen, Lillie Oulette-Howitz, and Oskar
Tauring-Traxler competed with 150 of the nation’s best
debaters. The tournament concluded an excellent season
which saw the South High debate program take 1st place in
the Minnesota Debater Teacher Association Cup competition
for best policy debate program.
Grants continued
Leadership
A first time offering to all students eligible to attend
South, this class will eventually be accredited.
Students develop skills in attitude, responsibility,
self-image, character, leadership and goal-setting.
The class used a variety of curriculums including
field trips and guest speakers in addition to weight
training and conditioning.
Partnership
Partnership has addressed the academic,
social and emotional needs of 11th and 12th
grade students for over 30 years! The
program reaches out to students who are
disconnected, disenfranchised, and behind in
credits. In spite of their difficulties, these
students commit to graduating and the staff is
there to help. This is an alternative education
approach that thrives in a standard
educational environment.
Student health
Merrilee Sullivan, school nurse, sees over 3,000 students every year. Over 100 of them
have injuries. That’s almost one a day. She has been doing her job without a wheelchair or
an ice-maker, two key components to a functioning health office.
Page 7
Kitchen
The South High kitchen crew serves over
500 breakfasts and over 800 lunches each
day. The crew was using thirty year old
pot-holders to handle all these trays and
pans. They now have state of the art potholders
to help serve hot meals to the
students of South High School.

Economics
Richard Nohel was thinking outside the box this
year when he brought in a game for students that
simulated trade, infrastructure, nation-building and
international conflict. It taught the students
negotiation skills, basic economic concepts and
conflict resolution in an engaging and fun
environment. The Foundation also provided funds
to acquire teacher certification for college level
classes, which in turn allows students college credit
for the course.
Science fair
Several students from South High’s All Nations
Program competed in the National American Indian
Science & Engineering Fair this past March. Three
students, one Grand Award Finalist and two Grand
Award Alternates went on to the International
Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA with
Foundation support. These students were able to
network with Nobel Laureates, apply for
scholarships, learn about other scientific fields and
meet other scientific leaders of the future.
History competition
South High was the only Minneapolis high school
represented at the 2012 National History Day competition
in Washington D.C. South’s team of five students made it to
the final round of judging and won a bronze medal, a 7th
place in the paper category and 11th place in the group
documentary. Students had some time to visit the FDR
Memorial—The Depression Soup Line during their trip to
Washington D.C.
Grants continued
s.t.a.r.t.
Project s.t.a.r.t. (students together as allies for racial trust) is a
leadership network mobilized by South students in 2009 to
develop themselves as intercultural leaders. The network
allows students to play an active role in closing equity gaps by
having intentional and safe forums where they can identify and
catalyze one another’s cultural assets. By engaging in the
network, South students have increased access to leadership
opportunities, such as community dialogues, presentations,
teaching and writing, that allow them to build leadership and
intercultural skills that are highly attractive to colleges and
employers. The network also allows for recent South graduates
engaged in s.t.a.r.t. to return and coach students new to the
network.
Student support
Each year freshman and sophomore students at
South are provided a school specific planner
which helps in scheduling their classes, staying
organized and having information at their fingertips.
Over 900 planners are provided each year.
Parents and students continue to provide feedback
that this one small amenity is a valuable tool for
transitioning students to high school life.
Theater performance
South High theater’s 2012 musical, Into the Woods, was a smashing success! Student actors started rehearsing in January,
learning their music and staging the play. Meanwhile, student designers and builders were busy creating whimsical fairytale
sets and beautiful and comical costumes. The musical was a big undertaking and everyone worked very hard to make
it come together in time for performances. It took place in mid-March and was met with great enthusiasm from the
audiences. Into the Woods was a fun, challenging time for all involved.
