FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN PORTLAND | 2010 ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 1

A Letter to our Friends:
Every spring Friends of the Children welcomes a new class of kindergarteners into our family with a
profound sense of optimism. We know the next 12 ½ years will be hard for these children. Caregivers
will enter and exit their lives. Their families will be impacted by drugs, violence, hunger and
homelessness. At times, they will not dare to hope that tomorrow will be any better than today.
But we know there is hope, because our children will not be alone. From this point forward they will
have a Friend to guide them and believe in them no matter what life may bring.
Every spring we also experience the heartbreak of being unable to enroll so many of the children
who desperately need a Friend of their own. In fact, a community assessment conducted in 2010
identified more than 19,000 children in the Portland metro area who live with multiple risk factors
that would qualify them for the Friends program.
We welcomed our first class of just 24 children in 1993. I am proud to report that, with tremendous
support from our community, we now serve 350 children and plan to serve 475 by 2015. At every
stage of growth our highest priority has been to protect the promise we make to our children - to be
there for them 4 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, for 12 ½ years, no matter what.
I am pleased to report that external evaluation continues to validate the effectiveness of the
Friend’s model:
• In 2010, the Harvard Business School Association of Oregon completed a rigorous return on
investment analysis, which revealed that every $1.00 invested in our program yields nearly
$7.00 in benefits to our youth and to society. In 2011, the same volunteers updated their data,
and found that the ROI increased to $7.20 per dollar invested.
• Preliminary results from the National Institutes of Health longitudinal study of Friends of the
Children’s model are very positive, indicating that children enrolled in our program are
significantly less anxious and depressed than at-risk children in a non-mentored
control group.
We take pride in our history of steady and thoughtful growth, and we are grateful to you, our
dedicated community of supporters, for growing with us as we continue in our quest to provide a
Friend to all vulnerable children who need one.
Warmest Regards,
Terri Sorensen, Executive Director
OUR MISSION
Friends of the Children provides our most vulnerable
children with paid, professionally-trained mentors
(Friends) for 12 ½ years. Beginning in kindergarten,
Friends stand by their youth as a source of consistent
support and guidance to break the cycle of poverty,
school failure, incarceration and early parenting in
our community.
CAFE FRIENDS
Brew one shot of espresso, top it with frothy steamed milk, and you’re ready to enjoy
a delicious latte. What happens when you add a spoonful of teamwork and a dash of
leadership It goes by the name of Café Friends, and it’s a fast growing youth-run caféstart-up
located in the Friends of the Children office.
Café Friends began 18 months ago when mentor Mike received an espresso machine
as a gift. “I started making way too many mochas at home, and my wife told me I
needed to get rid of it,” Mike said. “I mentioned it to one of my youth, and he begged
me to bring it in to the office.” Over winter break 2009, Mike and two of his adolescent
mentees opened Café Friends in the kitchen of the Friends of the Children offices for
the first time.
“Some kids find it terrifying to talk with and take orders from people they don’t
know. Luckily, these are the kids that make the fastest drinks! By the same token,
some youth are natural salesmen, but struggle with the technical aspect. Everyone’s
seemed to find their place.”
For many youth, Café Friends presents an opportunity for their leadership traits to
flourish. One of Mike’s youth, Matthew, has grown from a near-paralyzing fear of taking
orders from staff he didn’t know to peddling new Café Friends menu items throughout
the office.
Café Friends has expanded at an astonishing pace. Beginning with a few espresso drinks,
the café’s offerings have expanded to include Italian sodas and flavorings, home-baked
cookies and cakes, milk alternatives and even seasonal drink specials. All that growth
has originated with the youth. “At the end of the morning, they go home with
$10-$15 from the tips they’ve earned, they start to think about how to make the
café more successful. I try to give them as much freedom as possible to do that.”
The Café is managed by a Friends of the Children program graduate and staffed by
current youth on school in-service days and holidays. The Café’s staff has gone from a
staff of two to a rotating staff of 12, with new youth eager to sign up every week. Youth
do all of the shopping for the café at real business supply stores like Cash & Carry,
learning valuable accounting skills in the process.
Mike is confident that participation in Café Friends will help his young men develop key
employment skills, like customer service, teamwork and communication, which will set
them apart from their peers in future job interviews.
“Ultimately, what we’re doing with Café Friends is an expansion of what we want to do
with our youth all of the time: create opportunities, be available when they need it, and
when they take off in pursuit of their passion, try to get the heck out of the way.”
MICHAEL AND MICHELLE SCHAEFFER
A FATHER-DAUGHTER COMMITMENT TO FRIENDS
“When a Child Needs a Friend,” the headline read. The
year was 2004 and Friends of the Children was preparing
to celebrate its first graduating class. Meanwhile, Michael
Schaeffer was searching for a way to make a positive impact
in his community.
“I had pamphlets all over the house,” he says. For some time
he had been seeking a charity to support. He wanted to find
an organization that was helping the Portland community,
and he wanted to see the impact of the work. After reading
the article in The Oregonian he called Friends to ask for more
information, and soon knew this was the organization he had
been looking for.
Seven years later, Michael’s commitment to Friends is
stronger than ever. From the beginning, he knew that
automatic monthly deductions would be the most effective
way to contribute. He says this technique means “you don’t
miss it, but you’ve made a big impact by the end of the
year.” Since then Michael has significantly increased his
monthly contribution amount, and has also made one-time
gifts in honor of special occasions and at Friend Raiser. In
2008, Michael made a five-year commitment and became
a shareholder in Friends of the Children’s Child Investment
Program. This program gives donors an opportunity to invest
in the long-term future of our youth, much as Friends makes
a commitment to be there for them for a full 12.5 years.
Michael is proud to contribute to the organization’s growth
and to the successes of each graduating class. The feeling of
making a difference in children’s lives is something he hopes
his daughter, Michelle, will also experience. Michelle was in
college when Michael first learned about Friends and, after she
completed graduate school in 2010, they attended the Friend
Raiser event together for the first time. Though he had talked
to her about Friends over the years, Michael felt the event
would be a great opportunity for Michelle to learn about the
organization first-hand.
Following Friend Raiser, Michelle sent a touching email to
Executive Director, Terri Sorensen:
“I wanted to tell you how honored I was to be sitting at your
table tonight. I knew a little about Friends of the Children
but tonight I was blown away and mostly in tears. For many
fortunate people, such as myself, it is hard to relate and define
the hardships that occur daily in the very same community in
which they were raised. Tonight really opened my eyes to that
reality and it was emotional and depressing and inspiring. You
are truly part of something great and one day I hope that I can
have the same honor.”
This year Michelle followed her father’s example by establishing
an automatic monthly gift of her own. For the Schaeffers,
generosity has become a family tradition; one that Friends of
the Children is truly proud and thankful to be a part of.
PLANNED GROWTH
Nearly 18 years ago, Friends of the Children was founded on a vision to provide a
Friend to all vulnerable children who need one. Since then we have worked diligently
to include as many children as possible without compromising the quality and
effectiveness of the mentoring relationships that form the core of our program.
In January 2010, the Board of Directors approved a strategic plan to guide us through
the next five years. Through the strategic planning process we identified key goals to
guide us in this measured and deliberate growth. In order to ensure every new child
we enroll will have a Friend for a full 12.5 years, several initiatives have been launched
to broaden our community of supporters and to develop long-term funding sources.
To address the growing need for our services in outer SE Portland, we continue to
develop new school partnerships and are working to secure additional program spaces.
Friends of the Children’s Five Year Goals:
• Maintain Friends as a high quality program with validated outcomes measured
over time:
o 85% will graduate from high school or attain GED
o 50% will enroll in post-secondary learning
o 92% will avoid involvement in Juvenile Justice System
o 98% will avoid early parenting
• Increase the number of youth served to 475 by 2015.
• Secure sustainable revenue streams that support facility and operational costs.
• Brand Friends of the Children as one of the most recognizable and respected
mentoring organizations in Oregon/SW Washington.
• Hire, develop and retain outstanding employees by making FOTC a great place to
work and making it easy to be an employee.
• Maximize program and operational effectiveness and efficiency.
• Secure and maintain facilities that enhance service to youth and accommodate
our program vision.
Your support allows Friends of the Children to achieve our strategic goals. Thank
you for your continued investment in the lives and futures of our community’s most
vulnerable children.
MEETING OUR YOUTH WHERE THEY ARE
Maya steps onto the porch of the Friends House and looks up
with a smile. In the window are the paper flowers she and her
Friend, Stacy, put up to celebrate the first day of spring. Up in
the corner is the wind chime they made together last week. She
breathes a sigh of contentment as she opens the front door.
Maya worries about things most eight year-olds don’t
understand. Who will mom stay with tonight while Maya’s at
Grandma’s again How many more months until mom finds them
a place to live Will they go back to the same trailer park Later
she’ll share these worries with Stacy, but for now she pushes
them aside.
Here at the Friends House everything is okay and everything
feels like it’s meant just for her. There are computers, toys,
books, bicycles, and all the art supplies she can imagine. Soon
she’ll help Stacy cook dinner. Then they’ll read a story, play a
game or two, and check on the spinach plants sprouting in the
garden beds outside.
These are the kinds of memories some of us are lucky to have
about the homes we grew up in. Sleepovers, barbecues, water
fights in the yard, a game of basketball in the driveway. After a
tough day at school, or whenever things just didn’t seem to be
going our way, home was the place to retreat for comfort and
advice from someone we could trust.
At Friends of the Children, some of our kids are not so lucky. For
them, home is not a safe haven, but a minefield where violence,
hunger and neglect constantly threaten to erupt. Last year,
13% of our children moved more than once during the year, and
nearly 20% lived in foster care or stayed with relatives. Over the
past three years, nearly half of our children lived in homes where
there was not always enough to eat.
One of our goals at Friends of the Children is to provide stability
and consistency in lives that are sometimes chaotic and
confusing. The Friends Houses are critical to this goal. The NE
House opened in 1994, when most of our kids lived within a few
miles of our main office. The SE House opened in 2000 to serve
the rapidly growing number of families moving eastward to more
affordable neighborhoods.
Today, with our kids spread out at more than 120 schools in the
metro area, the houses serve as convenient meeting points
for community events like potlucks and barbecues. They also
provide a welcoming and familiar environment for Friends to
strengthen relationships with their children by treating them
to healthy meals and snacks, helping them with homework, and
encouraging them to pursue their creative and athletic interests.
For some the houses are simply great places to hang out and
have fun with their Friends. For others, like Maya, they provide
a desperately needed reprieve from the instability of daily life.
Maya does not always know what tomorrow will bring. But here
at the house with Stacy, for a few hours each week, she is home.
Scappoose
While all of our children
start at one of 11 partner
schools, life circumstances
often necessitate multiple
moves. Our kids are now
spread out at more than
120 schools. A child’s Friend
stays with them as long as
they live within 30 miles of
our office – no matter what.
FAST FRIENDS
WHAT IS FAST FRIENDS
Friends of the Children’s mission is to provide our most vulnerable children
a nurturing and sustained relationship with a who teaches positive values
and has attainable expectations for each child to become a healthy,
productive member of our community.
Through the Friends program, commitments are made to children for 12 ½
years. One of our three long-term goals for program participants is success
in school. This is evidenced by obtaining a high school diploma or GED,
which 86% of our youth achieve.
As students graduate from the formal Friends program, many of them
want to further their education by attending college or a trade school. Fast
Friends was founded in 2009 to help these youth reach their long-term
goals.
Fast Friends is a group of Friends of the Children supporters committed
to assisting program graduates in paying for tuition and expenses
at traditional four-year colleges, community colleges and trade and
vocational schools. Fast Friends supporters are commited to helping
graduates obtain sustainable careers that will support themselves and
their families well into the future.
Children program graduates! This year, 12 of
our youth completed our program. Whether
they’re following their dreams to Benedict
College to study music, University of Oregon
to study finance, Mount Hood Community
College or Portland Community College, we
wish them great success!
“When I came to Friends, it was like my
getaway. This place has helped me get to
a place in my mind, saying ‘I can do this.’
You know, I went through the fire. Now I’m
coming out as pure gold.”
- Anthony, class of 2010
“Lori and I make annual contributions to a number of organizations that are doing
good things right now for children. We really believe, though, that Friends of the
Children can and should bless the lives of children both now, and for a long, long
time, so we were very comfortable including Friends in our estate planning.”
