HOW TO DO SPRING CARLISLE RIGHT
HOW TO DO SPRING CARLISLE RIGHT
Stay here!
Take a motorhome and park in the field beside the
fairgrounds. It holds hundreds of sites, and it’s a great
place to meet lots of car people. Also, walk the side
streets to see all the stuff and vehicles for sale. Check
out the tailgate lots, where you can park your car and
buy a sausage and a beer (at Jim’s, by the main “vehicles
for sale” entrance). You can't have a bad time. —
The Golden Corral (6476 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg,
PA, phone 717.766.6309) buffet is only 10 miles
from Carlisle, and they offer great food at a great price.
There is a broad selection for the groups that want
a little bit of everything — or are just not quite sure
what they want.
The Army Heritage Trail at the U.S. Army Heritage and
Education Center (950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, 17013,
phone 717.245.3972) is a great place to see history,
and the Carlisle Sports Emporium, a giant entertainment
complex (29 South Middlesex Road, Carlisle,
17015, phone 717.258.4741), is a great place for the
There’s a lot going on in and around Carlisle, PA, and
Sports Car Market magazine polled our readers for
the best insider tips on good eats, nice places to stay
and things to do when you’re not out kicking tires and
bargaining for rare parts. Here’s what they had to say:
This will be my fifth year going to Spring Carlisle.
Rillo’s (60 Pine St., Carlisle; phone 717. 243.6141) is
good for Italian food, and for breakfast I would suggest
the Carlisle Diner (800 W. High St., Carlisle; phone
717.240.0721). Many people suggest Harrisburg for
additional dining options.
Try to stay as close as possible to the event grounds,
as later in the week traffic can be a nightmare. Also, try
to park as close as possible to the gates, as it makes
toting parts, etc., back to your car easier. Sometimes
if you park at someone’s house you can prepay for a
space for the next day and they’ll save it for you.
Try to get there as early as possible, as you can cover
more ground when it’s less crowded. The gates open
at 7 a.m. Have a plan on how you want to cover the
show to help ensure you don’t miss anything. If there
are specific vendors you want to visit, find out where
they are before you get there.
I would estimate that I look at less than 25% of the
booths. If you don’t see anything interesting in a
booth, keep walking. The quality of the booths varies
tremendously. Some are professional and others look
like they cleaned out their garage.
If you want to come back to a booth, write down
the location (I carry a pad and pen). The booths are
marked with tags on the asphalt path, and sometimes
it’s very hard to find a booth again.
You see some people with carts or wagons for their
purchases, but they always look difficult to navigate
through the crowds, so I usually bring a tote bag.
The car corral area is great with a wide range of cars
from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. The cars in the corral also
turn over each day, so you may want to check it out
early each morning.
Bring lots of cash, and don't be afraid to negotiate
with vendors on parts. I hear that you can get some
great deals on Sunday, as vendors pack up to leave.
