Dhaka University Admission Test
2003-2004
KHA-UNIT
Read the following passage and answer questions 1-5:
Waiting is very annoying, exhausting, and time consuming. Waiting to buy books at the college store is an example of a very
long and tiresome task. I need to buy books, and so does everyone else. This causes the lines to be very long. Most of the time
I find myself leaning against the wall daydreaming.
Sometimes I even leave this and hope to come back when the store isn‟t extremely busy. But that never works because
everyone else seems to get the same idea. So I finally realize that I just have to wait. Another experience is waiting for a ride
always seems to be the last car to pull up in the parking lot. When I am waiting for a ride, I wonder what it would be like to
own a car or if I would ever make it home. Waiting in line at a fast-food restaurant is also annoying because, if it is fast, I
shouldn‟t have to wait. But in reality it is never fast and I have to spend a good deal of my time to buy a burger or a chicken
fry. By the time I am handed over the food, I feel hungrier, or sometimes I find my appetite totally gone. Anyway, I shouldn‟t
complain because waiting just seems to be a part of life, so I might as well accept it.
Dhaka University Admission Test
2002-2003
KHA-UNIT
Read the passage reproduced below and answer questions l-6:
The practice of naturopathy can be traced back to over 1,000 years to the time of Hippocrates, who is known as the father of
medicine (460 BC to 357 BC). He considered diseases to be an effect of imbalances in such natural elements as air, water,
sunshine and nourishment.
As the name suggests, naturopathy is the treatment or prevention of disease without drugs, using natural therapies like changes
in diet and lifestyle. It is based on the belief that the body is self-healing, and has the ability to repair itself and recover from
illness, if in a healthy environment. Naturopathy also deems that the power to restore health lies not in drugs but in nature. The
modern medical system, on the other hand, depends on drugs; it treats the symptom and suppresses the disease, but often does
little to ascertain the real root of the problem. Naturopathy seeks to find the cause of the symptom and then treats it with
natural changes based on individual requirements. According to this type of therapy, physical problems are invariably a result
of emotional imbalances caused by the stress of modern life. Yet another cause of diseases is the accumulation of waste and
toxins in the body. Consequently, a basic foundation of naturopathy is that the mind, body and soul are interconnected and
Read the passage carefully and answer questions (20-25)
Most of us take life for granted. We know that one day we must die but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When
we are in buoyant health death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. We go about our pretty tasks, hardly aware of
our listless attitude toward life. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it of not being
conscious of health until we are ill. I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and
deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight: silence
would teach him the joys of sound.
20. According to the writer we do not pay attention to life because
a. we think life is meaningless b. we are too tired
c. we give more importance to death d. we do not realize the value of life.
a. to punish them for their sins
b. to help them understand the deaf and the blind
c. to help them understand the deaf and the benefits of sight and sound
d. to bring darkness and silence in the world.
23. What does the writer mean by “all but unimaginable”
a. it is almost impossible to imagine death b. it is not possible to imagine death
KHA-UNIT
Read the passage carefully then answer Question 1 to 8:
Strange spaces of silence seem to separate one period of activity from another. There was Sapho and a little group of women
all writing poetry on a Greek Island before the birth of Christ. A long silence followed. Then about the year 1000 we find a
certain court lady writing a very long and beautiful novel in Japan. But in England in the sixteenth century, when the
dramatists and poets were most active, the women were dumb. Elizabethan literature is exclusively masculine. Then, at the end
of the eighteenth century and in the beginning of the nineteenth century, we find women again writing this time in England
with extraordinary frequency and success.
Read the passage and select appropriate answers to Q. 1-6:
Many people must have visited by a bat in their drawing room or bed room at one time another, and if they have not been too
scared of it, they will have been fascinated by its swift, skilful fight and the rapid twists and turns with which it avoids all
obstacles, including objects, like shoes and towels that are hurled at it. Now despite the old saying, bats are blind. They have
perfectly good eyes, but these are so tiny that are not easily detected. Their eyes are certainly not good enough for them to
perform some of the extraordinary flying stunts in which they indulge. It was an Italian naturalist called Spallanzani, in the
eighteenth century, who first started to investigate the flight of bats, and by the unnecessarily cruel method of bolding several
