new method <strong>of</strong> electing seminary pr<strong>of</strong>essors was referred to a special<br />

committee to be named by the Committee on Nominations.<br />

Paper No. 8 from the Sharon Session on the matter <strong>of</strong> giving<br />

greater emphasis to tithing was referred to the Committee on Stewardship.<br />

Paper No. 9 regarding the authority <strong>of</strong> an unconstituted session<br />

in requesting a ptstor's resignation was referred to the Committee on<br />

Discipline.<br />

Paper No. 10 from the New York Presbytery requesting permission<br />

to solicit funds for new work in New York state was referred<br />

to the Home Mission Board.<br />

By special resolution, each presbytery was ordered to make a<br />

survey as to whether each congregation under its care has paid its<br />

assessment to the pension fund and in cases where payment has not<br />

been made, take appropriate action to remedy the situation. Also that<br />

each presbvtery in its report to <strong>Synod</strong> state whether all pension<br />

assessments are paid in full.<br />

<strong>Synod</strong> ordered its <strong>of</strong>ficers to express its appreciation to F. M.<br />

Wilson for his long and faithful service on the Seminary Board.<br />

The report <strong>of</strong> the Witness Committee was read and taken up<br />

item by item for adoption. All items were adopted. Item six on the<br />

reelection <strong>of</strong> A. J. McFarland was passed by a rising vote. The vacancies<br />

on the Committee were referred to the Nominating Committee. The<br />

report as a whole was adopted and is as follows:<br />

REPORT OF THE WITNESS COMMITTEE<br />

The Witness Committee respectfully reports:<br />

We suffered a great loss this year in the death <strong>of</strong> our Chairman,<br />

J. Boyd Tweed on March 3. <strong>1954</strong>. T. C. McKnight has prepared<br />

the following minute on his life and his service to our Committee.<br />

"Our hearts are saddened by the fact that Dr. Tweed will not<br />

be with us any more in this work in which he was so greatly interested,<br />

and for which he gave us such valuable counsel. Though we<br />

feel a great sense <strong>of</strong> loss, we rejoice in his victory <strong>of</strong> eternal life,<br />

since we believe and know he received from his Lord the words <strong>of</strong><br />

commendation: "Well done, good and faithful servant, Eenter thou<br />

into the joy <strong>of</strong> thy Lord."<br />

"We wish to record the fact <strong>of</strong> Dr. Tweed's faithfulness in all<br />

his work, and especially in this cause, which he efficiently served<br />

as Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Committee for so many years."<br />

David M. Carson was chosen Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Committee.<br />

The Committee resolved to hold regular meetings on the third<br />

Monday <strong>of</strong> October and April.<br />

Distribution <strong>of</strong> Literature<br />

Dr. Tweed carried on the distribution <strong>of</strong> literature on our<br />

Distinctive Principles. He was greatly concerned over the apparent<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> interest on the part <strong>of</strong> our ministers and members in the
