Expressions of Interest
High Definition Set-Top-Box System-on-Chip Turn Key Solution
The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company
Limited (ASTRI) is wholly-owned and funded by the HKSAR Government.
ASTRI’s public missions are directed towards stimulating the growth of technology
based companies in Hong Kong by carrying out research and development projects
in selected technology areas and transferring the results to industry for
commercialization.
ASTRI has completed the development of a low cost and high performance High
Definition Set Top Box (HD STB) System on Chip (SoC), taped out and chip
verified, and ported production-quality STB software on the SoC chip with
cost-optimized reference Printed Circuit Board (PCB).
The STB SoC turn key solution package developed by ASTRI includes the following
components:
1. Multi-format Low Cost High Perfornance HD STB SoC
This HD STB SoC is based on CMOS 130nm ASIC technology. It uses the
ASTRI enhanced 32-bit Open-RISC Multi-Core Processors with internal
CACHE memory, supporting 300 MHz clock rates and running an embedded
operating system (OS). The SoC will support the following features and modules:
• Fully compliant H.264/MPEG2/RMVB/VP6/VP7/VP8/VC1 video decoders
• Real time full HD – 1920 x 1080P
• DDR2 controller and PHY
• HDMI controller and PHY
• USB controller and PHY
• Video DAC
• PLL
• HD 1080P display controller
• TS demux video stream processor
• Host Processor
• Audio Processor
• TV Encoder
• Smart Card interface
• Peripherals: Flash Controller, I2C, I2S, SPDIF, Ethernet, GPIO, UART,
32-64 DMA bridge
• Power Management Unit
2. Low Cost Reference PCB Platform
• Completely optimized for final HD STB product
• RTOS and all the necessary peripheral drivers
3. Software Development Kit (SDK) and Software Drivers
• Linux OS and API porting
• Audio driver/firmware
4. STB Application Software
ASTRI’s HD-STB SoC turn key solution package can reach the market within a
short time frame, and offers a significant competitive advantage for multimedia
consumer electronic devices such as networked digital TV, set top box, portable
media centre and etc.
ASTRI is making this technology available for industry partners such as IC design
houses, consumer electronic product manufacturers and end-equipment ODM/OEM
companies, and are soliciting proposals for various collaboration research and
development models, including but not limited to non-exclusive/exclusive licensing
and spin-off.
Interested parties are invited to submit expressions of interest to ASTRI, 3rd Floor,
