Power-Boost filling function
The pressure in the refrigerant tank is automatically
increased by the automatic Power-Boost process if
the vehicle air-conditioning fi lling process becomes
too slow. This optimises the fi lling process and
avoids pressure compensation between the vehicle
and the service unit.
The Power-Boost process is entirely softwarecontrolled,
taking the parameters pressure,
temperature and refrigerant scales into account.
Air-conditioning service station
ACTT 200
The special internal fl ow diagram supports a
powerful push-pull eff ect for optimum fl ushing of
air-conditioning system components. The pushpull
fl ushing process is controlled by the software
and as a result always ensures optimum fl ushing
performance.
Connection for the nitrogen cylinder
Electronic leak detection
with nitrogen
A nitrogen cylinder reduced to
12 bar can be connected to the
service station. The user can put
the air-conditioning system under
pressure, this is then monitored by
the internal pressure sensors. This
way, leaks can be established and
indicated.
Air-conditioning service/Hella ACTT 200
Software-controlled release of non-condensed gases
The software automatically controls the bleeding of non-condensable
gases (air), taking the refrigerant tank temperature and pressure
parameters into account. It opens the draining valve to release air and
stabilizes the correct pressure depending on the current refrigerant
temperature.
Relative pressure (bar)
Refrigerant temperature (°C)
Example:
If the tank pressure at 20°C is >4.68 bar, this means: air in the tank.
In this situation it is necessary to drain the air until the correct pressure-/temperature
ratio has been reached again.
No manual intervention by the user necessary
If vehicle throughput is to be increased, the multimeter takes
over the pressure test from the service station, which can then
be used for other tasks. It is mobile – thanks to the easily legible
displays this pressure test can be carried out quickly. In addition
to the air-conditioning service station, a thermometer is required
as standard equipment to determine the temperature of the
outlet air.
1. Multimeter R134a
4-valve gauge with hoses
and quick-action couplers for
servicing and pressure testing on
R134a air-conditioning systems.
2. Digital hand-held thermometer
To check the air-conditioning system, the air outlet temperature must be
determined at the central nozzles. Easy testing is facilitated by the 10 cm long
probe.
Part no.
outlet nozzles. With programmable
maximum and minimum temperatures.
Part no.
8PE 351 228-041
3. Infrared thermometer
Determines the temperature on any
surface immediately, without making
contact. The surface temperature is
infl uenced by various components
(e. g. condenser). In the case of
air conditioning with controlled
compressors, a temperature test is
essential for a safe diagnosis to be
made.
Part no.
8PE 351 228-031
In the case of modern systems with
electronically controlled compressors,
diagnosis through temperature
measurement is becoming increasingly
important in order to draw conclusions
about perfect system function.
3. Infrared thermometer
The infrared thermometer is used to determine the temperature on any surface
without making contact. This means it is not only possible to check the outlet air,
it is also possible to check individual components and pipes.
Air-conditioning service
Cleaning and disinfecting evaporators
Methods and tools
Hella Airsept Service Set
“Professional version”
For effective disinfection and
homogeneous evaporator coating.
Without Airsept
With Airsept
An air-conditioning system can be technically in order and yet still
cause problems. The design of compact evaporators used today
makes them an ideal nesting place and breeding ground for
bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms that then get into the
vehicle interior through the ventilation system.
This can cause allergic reactions among the passengers such as
e. g. sneezing, coughing and watery eyes. In addition, a musty or
even mouldy smell can spread throughout the interior. With the
Airsept evaporator treatment, Hella is making a modern cleaning
and disinfection system available for regular use.
How Airsept works:
! Airsept disinfects and cleans.
! Airsept clads the evaporator in an antiseptic coat and
prevents new micro-organisms forming by means of special
intercept salts.
! Airsept also increases cooling performance by getting rid of
humidity, dust and other contaminants.
Set contains:
! Airsept applicator with atomizer
! Spraying pistol
! Pressure reducer for compressed air
connection
! 1 bottle Airsept-plus evaporator
treatment agent, OE version
Work procedure
1. Access via interior fi lter: First of all, the interior fi lter is removed. Then dry the evaporator
(see separate instructions on evaporator treatment). This is the only way to guarantee that the
application will be successful. Check if the condensation drain hole is blocked with e. g. leafs.
2. After cleaning, the Airsept applicator is introduced into the air inlet. Care must be taken
that there is free access to the evaporator. Using the compressed air connection, a whole
Airsept bottle (120 ml) is sprayed over the lamellae of the evaporator during the cleaning
process. It is important to proceed exactly according to the operating instructions to
guarantee perfect disinfection and drying. Then insert the new interior fi lter.
Air-conditioning service
Protection from air condition service stations and
compressors
During the suction process, the Recycle Guard removes dirt
particles, lubricants, contrast and sealing agents and any other
soiling from the refrigerant before it reaches the air conditioning
service station.
Work procedure
This prevents damage such as clogging and sticking at the
air-conditioning service station. The Recycle Guard can be used
with refrigerant both in a liquid and gas form. Optimal results can
be achieved if the refrigerant is extracted in gaseous condition.
It is therefore recommended to connect the Recycle Guard to
the vehicle connections that contain the refrigerant in a gaseous
state. The Recycle Guard contains a fi lter element that should
be replaced after 30 hours recycling/fi lling and of whenever the
suction speed of the air conditioning device clearly deteriorates.
1. Connection of the Recycle Guard on
the low-pressure side.
2. High-pressure connection during the
suction process is closed.
Work documentation
The spectrum of air-conditioning jobs than can be carried
out successfully using tools, spare parts, service parts and
consumables from Hella is extremely wide. Some of these
jobs should be marked on the air-conditioning system or
documented. These “small” information aids round off the Hella
Refrigerant analysis
Methods and tools
Hella refrigerant analysis device
Detects and measures the degree of
purity (in %) of R134a, R12, R22
and hydrocarbons.
The analysis device includes:
! 1 device
! a 12 Volt connection for the vehicle
battery
! an R134a adapter and
! an R12 adapter
Every air-conditioning expert knows that the liquids R12 and
R134a cannot be mixed up due to the connections. Yet no-one
can be sure whether conversion has been carried out correctly or
whether a different refrigerant than the one prescribed has been
fi lled.
Part no.
8PE 351 223-051
Additional risk factors are soiled and/or combustible refrigerants:
Soiling and damage threaten the air-conditioning components
and the air-conditioning service stations. In addition, further airconditioning
systems can be contaminated through the soiled
service station. This leaves the garage facing high follow-on
costs. To be sure this doesn’t happen, a gas analysis should be
carried out before every evacuation operation. A small refrigerant
sample is taken from the low-pressure side of the air-conditioning
system for this purpose. The refrigerant analysis device provides
information about the refrigerant’s composition and degree of
purity in less than a minute.
Leak detection
One of the most frequent causes of functional problems in the
air-conditioning system are leaks in the refrigerant circuit.
They lead to an imperceptible reduction of the fi lling quantity and
therefore to drops in performance, through to total failure. As
far as the refrigerant R134a is concerned in particular, it is well
known that this diffuses out of rubber pipes and connections.
Since air-conditioning experts cannot be sure whether there is a
leak or whether the refrigerant loss is the normal loss over time,
careful leak detection is a must.
The following are tested:
! All connections and pipes
! Compressors
! Condenser and evaporator
! Filter-dryer
! Pressure switch
! Service connections
! Expansion valvel/Orifice tube
Hella recommends 4 methods of leak detection:
1. Contrasting agent and UV light
2. Electronic leak detection
3. Leak detection using nitrogen
4. Leak detection through foam formation
This means Hella covers the whole spectrum and puts garages in
a position to choose the most effective system for their particular
requirements.
or high-pressure side. Where vehicles only have a high-pressure connection, an individual high-pressure adapter has to be
ordered.
2. Even when the system is full, the fl uorescent contrasting agent is simply fed into the system via the low-pressure adapter. If
there is only a high-pressure connection available, the Spotgun is connected using a separate adapter.
3. The contrasting agent can be dosed simply and exactly through the cartridge press.
Leak detection for forming gas
Methods and tools
New legal regulations no longer allow leaky air-conditioning
plants to be fi lled with refrigerant. Therefor another medium is
required for effective leak detection.
The forming gas 95 / 5 is ideally suited for this being made to
95 % of nitrogen and 5 % of hydrogen. Forming gas 95 / 5 is
not harmful to the environment, it is not fl ammable and is not
poisonous. After the air-conditioning system has been fi lled,
the special leakage searcher is used to fi nd leaks. As hydrogen
atoms are the smallest particles occurring in nature, they will exit
even at the smallest leaks.
Another difference compared to the R134a refrigerant is that
hydrogen is lighter than air and therefore all components and
connections can be checked from above. Leaking evaporators
can be detected by taking measurements at the air outlet
nozzles in the centre console. Laborious measurements at
the condensation water drain or the foot air outlets are not
necessary.
After searching for leaks, the forming gas can simply be released
to the atmosphere. The leak detector for forming gas only reacts
to hydrogen.
Since pure hydrogen is not present in the engine compartment,
there is no cross-sensitivity. This makes leakage detection very
reliable.
Leak detection
Leak detection for refrigerant
Methods and tools
Work procedure
Electronic leak detector
for refrigerant
Indicates leaks through an acoustic
signal. It detects halogen gases and
even detects the tiniest of leaks at points
that are diffi cult to reach (e.g. evaporator
leaks).
Part no.
8PE 351 224-071
1. As an alternative to leak detection
with fl uorescent leak detection agents,
an electronic tester can be used.
2. The extremely sensitive leak detector
from Hella detects even the smallest of
leaks that are indicated by means of an
acoustic signal.
3. Thanks to its bendy swan-like neck,
the fast detection of a leak is even
possible at spots that are diffi cult to
access (e.g. at the evaporator’s water
drain).
4. Thanks to the different sensibility
levels, different settings are possible for
all leak states.
Methods and tools
Work procedure
Hella nitrogen set 150
This tool can be used for leak tests – in
addition to its function for fl ushing the
system. For leak tests, a fi lling adapter
is required for the service connection as
well as a hose adapter. The leak can be
detected by a “hissing” noise.
It may be sensible to make the leaky
spot visible using leak detection agent.
Opening vehicle-specific
pipe connections
Methods and tools
Work procedure
Spring-Lock connections are used by some vehicle
manufacturers for installation of the air-conditioning systems in
the factory. This principle sees two different inserted elements
set up a pipeline connection. They can only be opened for
repairs using special Spring-Lock tools. Hella’s air-conditioning
catalogue lists the range of Spring-Lock tools for different vehicle
brands.
1. The tight pipeline connection cannot
be opened without the respective
tools.
2. The opened tool, which is used to
Flushing the air-conditioning system
Methods and tools
Professional fl ushing upholds warranty claims and prevents
follow-on repairs. A clean system is the basic requirement for a
perfectly functioning air-conditioning system. During fl ushing with
fl ushing liquid, the entire system is chemically cleaned and freed
of stubborn particles.
Rising of the air conditioning system and its components is one
of the most common and important repair tasks. It is carried out
to remove soiling and damaging substances.
This includes:
1. Metal wear during compressor damage 2. Elastomer particles
3. Silicate (fi lter drier) 4. Moisture and 5. Soiled refrigerant oil.
As an alternative to the simple and straightforward cleaning of the
air-conditioning system using our air-conditioning service unit, a
good cleaning result is also achieved by fl ushing with chemical
liquid. Subsequently the fl ushed part of the air-conditioning
system must be blown out with nitrogen and dried.
Please note:
System components must always be fl ushed individually. Dryer,
valves and compressors must not be fl ushed.
Flushing with refrigerant
The innovative air-conditioning service unit Hella ACTT 200
with its integrated fl ushing function makes the fl ushing of airconditioning
systems fast and economical. An additional external
fl ushing unit and fl ushing adapter set have to be used, which are
available separately. After the function has been started on the
unit, the vehicle's air conditioning system is fi lled with max. 4 kg
liquid refrigerant and then suctioned off again.
Repairs/Flushing: Flushing the air-conditioning system
Drying with nitrogen
Work procedure
After the rinsing process, the connection lines and the system
components are blown-out individually with standard nitrogen
and dried at the same time (technical nitrogen/ pressure up
to 12 bar). No disposal costs are incurred. Blowing out with
nitrogen alone does not remove any stubborn particles and only
transports a fraction of the oil out of the circuit.
Note:
After rinsing with the rinsing liquid, it must be dried with nitrogen.
!
Repair of Pipes
Methods and tools
Hella LOKRING service case
Manual assembly tool set for
one-sided and double-sided
LOKRING connections up to an outer
diameter of 19 mm. Sturdy steel case
with exchangeable plastic system
boxes.
LOKRING is a fast and extremely profi table repair method.
Instead of having to order expensive complete pipe systems and
wait for deliveries when pipelines are faulty, the problem can be
solved on the spot – often without having to dismantle anything.
The LOKRING principle has proved its worth thousands of times
over in air-conditioning and climate technology.
It stands out thanks to nine processing advantages:
! Simple and quick fitting
! Permanent, hermetically sealed metal/metal seals
! Safe connection of pipes made of various
materials
! No special preparation necessary for the pipes
! Handy fitting tools
! Large dimensional tolerances allowed
! No burring effect in the fitting area
! No welding, soldering or thread cutting
! Environmentally friendly and risk-free connection technique
! LOKRING is so airtight that there is no notable drop in
pressure and no reduction in flow speed.
Case includes:
! Hand assembly tool with 2 bolts
! 5 assembly brackets for different
diameters from 8 to 19 mm
! LOKPREP 65 G sealing fluid
! 8 LOKRING couplings for pipe-topipe
As a backup, the surfaces of the pipe ends are moistened with
LOKPREP sealing fl uid. The system is permanently airtight at
the LOKRING spots. The pipe connections have been designed
for a maximum rated pressure of 50 bar and a testing pressure
of 200 bar. They can be used in a temperature range of –50°C to
+150°C.
Oils
PAO-oils
PAO-Oil 68 AA1 Plus UV
The successful PAO-Oil 68 is now even better. Because the UV leak
detection agent has already been added. You only have to fi ll one product
into the refrigerant circuit: For perfect lubrication and safe leak detection.
This saves a work step during every air conditioning service and also the
associated costs for the UV leak detection agent and possibly tool costs as
well.
PAO-Oil 68 PLUS UV offers you important benefits:
! Compatible with all other lubricants
! Suitable for all coolant types
! Does not absorb moisture (not hygroscopic)
! Reduces the noise level
! Larger operating temperature range from between (–68 and +315°C
! Years of practical experience
! Higher power output for less energy
! No collection in evaporators or condensers
To guarantee an adequate intensity of the leak detection agent in the
refrigerant circuit, around 10 % of the require oil filling quantity in
the air conditioning circuit must be replaced or filled with PAO-Oil 68
PLUS UV. Of course, the PAO-Oil 68 PLUS UV can be used for 100 %
of the oil filling quantity.
Tests performed by the manufacturer (e.g. The sealed tube tests according
to the standard ASHRAE 97) show that the product has no negative effect
on the components of the air conditioning circuit. The same also applies
when used in air conditioning service stations.
You can of course also order the PAO Oil without UV
(see item list pages 44 – 45).
