Lent begins this month! Last
year during Lent we had an amazing
outpouring of God’s blessings,
strength and power! Remember how
we committed to fast from non-water
drinks and give the savings to fund
water wells Through God’s leading
and this church’s generosity we
committed to financially build 7 water
wells! We also committed to biblical
study of the issue of poverty and the
lack of adequate water resources
around the globe. A part of what we
discovered was that we are called by
God to alleviate suffering, to reach out
to the broken and to bind up the
wounds of those who are shackled by
measures often beyond their control.
We followed God’s lead and we will
now be making a tremendous difference
in over 2000 lives in Ethiopia by
bringing them clean, fresh, drinking
water for the very first time!
I am committed to making just
such a difference in 2013! We’re told
in Luke’s gospel that Jesus began his
ministry by proclaiming this truth,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring
good news to the poor. He has sent
me to proclaim release to the captive
and recovery of sight to the blind, to
let the oppressed go free, to proclaim
the year of the Lord’s favor.” Jesus
read these words from the prophet
Isaiah (ch. 61), the same prophet from
which the words at the top of this
article are taken. We are called to
justice—to rescue the oppressed, defend
the orphan, plead for the widow.
It is our task as followers of Jesus.
This Lent, I want to set the
captives free. I want to bring good
news to the poor. I want to let the
oppressed to go free. I want the blind
(spiritually, emotionally, physically)
to see. I want to proclaim God’s favor!
I want to invite you to join the
Justice Journey this Lent! The
Justice Journey will call us to
alleviate the injustice of human
trafficking locally and globally.
We will discover what modern day
slavery is and what atrocious damage
it causes to the human soul while at
the same time offering the hope,
mercy and justice of Jesus for those
entrapped. We are partnering with
International Justice Mission
(www.ijm.org) to set people free! Our
goal will be to raise $27,000 which is
the cost of 6 human trafficking rescue
operations—one for each of the weeks
in Lent. This is the equivalent of
every family in the church offering
$15/week of Lent. We can do this!
Modern day slavery oppresses
over 27 million people. More people
are enslaved now than at any other
time in recorded history. As followers
of the One who came to set the
captive free and release the oppressed,
we must join the Justice Journey and
do something about this injustice. I
invite you to pray for the courage of
Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit,
and the love of God so that we can
discover how to once again, make a
profound difference in the world for
the sake of the Gospel!
Lent begins Feb. 13 and Feb.
17 is the first Sunday. To begin the
Justice Journey, check out some of

about how together, as we join the
Justice Journey, we will be doing
what Jesus calls us to do!

NEW WORSHIP TIME
Throughout Lent our traditional worship service will
begin at 11:15am. All other times will remain the
same. This trial is in order to help our Sunday
school classes have more time for learning, our parents
to have more time to transport children from
class to worship, our choir members to have more
time for Sunday school, and everyone to have more
time to fellowship prior to the traditional worship.
This trial run will begin Sun., Feb. 17 at 11:15am!
CLEAN HANDS:
They say, “cleanliness is next to Godliness!” During
this season of germ spreading we want to invite you to
keep clean hands so that our greeting time in worship
can be both hospitable and healthy! We have installed
hand sanitizer dispensers on the exterior of the main
sanctuary doors on either side as you enter from the
foyer. We invite you to enter church by sanitizing your
hands. If you can’t find the dispenser, ask an
usher. Thanks for your hospitality and health!
HOLY LAND TRIP 2013
Our church is taking a trip to the Holy Land this
fall. There is still time for YOU to join the trip.
The dates of the trip are October 5-13,
2013. The cost of the trip, fully inclusive, will
be approximately $3000/person. A land only
option is available (you secure your own
flight). We will visit much of the Holy Land and
places that Jesus walked. If you would like to

NEW WORSHIP SERIES
Feb. 3 & 10 our worship series will be, Operation
Serving from the Heart, where we will discover
how God has gifted us for ministry and how God
sends us into ministry. If you have been trying to
discern what God wants you to be doing and how
to do it—this series is for you! Be sure to invite a
friend to join the operation!
ASH WEDNESDAY
We will begin Lent on Wed., Feb. 13 with a Taize worship
experience at 7pm. Come experience prayer,

Walk to Emmaus Spiritual Retreat
The Walk to Emmaus is a 72 hour spiritual
renewal retreat designed to strengthen our
Christian faith and discipleship. The Walks are
held at the Briarwood Retreat Center outside of

Happy Ground Hog
Day! January seemed to
go by so very quick and
I’m wondering where it
went. Well, the youth
certainly had a great
month! The highlight
was the Mid-Winter retreat at Bridgeport Conference
Center. The youth had the pleasure of hearing from
Rev. Baughman who helped lead the youth in the
importance of putting their faith in action! The
youth also got to see firsthand other youth leading
the whole event and the small groups. It was an
amazing time of fellowship and worship and the
youth left with a better understanding of what
Christ is calling all of us to do. My favorite take
away from Rev. Baughman was that the opposite of
love is indifference, and as Christians we need to
strive towards love, not indifference!
February will be the start of another Bible
study for both Sr. and Jr. High youth. Sr. High will
be doing a study on Sticky Faith, how to keep their
faith after high school. Jr. High will study the top
13 questions youth have about God! These studies
will be Wednesdays from 7-8:30pm! I am excited to
once again discover with the youth their relationship
with Christ and how we all can share that relationship
with the world!!

HAPPY FEBRUARY FROM WORSHIP ARTS!
† Hey guys!! We are SO looking
forward to all that the upcoming
Lenten Season is going to be here
in our church! I wanted to give a
few dates to watch for: FEBRUARY
1, 7pm our own Imre Patkai and
his good friend, Imre Olah, will
put on an amazing piano and
organ concert together! It promises
to be AMAZING – please join
us and invite a friend/family members—ALL
ages welcome!
This next one is tentative—we are
working on another PRAISE FEST
to help raise awareness and funding
for our outreach cause for
Lent, and we’ll be inviting other
church bands to participate again
this year. The date is tentatively
APRIL 6, at 6pm.
† Also, we are really trying to
grow our Adult Chancel Choir right
now – we need your help to do
that! So many of you let me
know how much you love the
choir and miss them when they’re
gone. Can you help us and be our
eyes and ears amongst the congregation
If you hear a beautiful
voice—invite them to pray
about joining our choir! We’d
really LOVE to grow this family. If
you are holding back because of
your doubt in your own musical
knowledge or history, don’t!! We
will all help each other grow!! I
plan on having a “Music Basics”
Saturday workshop soon –

† We are also still looking for
co-directors for both children’s
choirs. You do not have to have
prior music teaching experience.
Being comfortable working with
younger children is necessary!
† We NEED more media/sound
team volunteers! We will have a
training session for the new media
software very soon and are looking
for anyone/everyone who is
interested in learning together!

Our church is planning to lay an outdoor, year-round labyrinth on the north side of the building
set inside the serene setting of the large oak trees. The labyrinth is a centuries old tradition
of prayer walking that has both Christian and non-Christian roots. Its purpose is to help
one draw into a more intimate relationship with God through the simple design and the purging
away of outside influences. It is a very profound experience. LuAnn Walden is heading up
this excellent spiritual development tool. We have already raised $900 toward our goal of
$1,500 to build the labyrinth. If you would like to make a donation or help in the building,

Wow what a great start to
2013! I am so excited about all of
the children participating in the daily
devotional challenge, and it’s not too
late to get involved! You can catch
up or start today. Let’s get all of
our children reading the Word every
day! Devotionals still available at the
information center for $10 each.
We will kick off the remainder
of our 2012-2013 Construction
Zone session in February. Below
is a tentative schedule. We will have
2 or 3 more off site meetings including
May 19th.
It’s not too early to start
thinking about summer camp! Camp
Bridgeport is already filling up dates!
Several of our kids are signing up for
July 30 th to Aug 4 th . Camp is for
kids who have completed grades 3-5
by summer. For more information go

let me know if you sign up. We like
to keep track of who is going and
get as many in a group as we can!

Join in the fun this Easter season as
we celebrate Lent in Children’s
Church with a Jellybean Easter!
We will concentrate on a different
character trait each Sunday associated
with the Jellybean prayer
(example: kindness, forgiveness, sacrifice,
faith, grace). We will be encouraging
the kids to earn beans
each week by working on those character
traits. Look for more information
to come home from Children’s
Church, or contact AnneMarie.
Reminders to parents that we
encourage your Children to sit in
worship when you feel they are ready
(usually about 3 rd or 4 th grade.)
We provide a Step into Sanctuary
worksheet to help them with the get
more out of the sermon. These are
available each week at the information
center. Have them fill one out
and turn it in for fun prizes each
quarter!! Last quarter’s top prize
earners were Emily Maas, Ashley
Helms, and Nicole Helms, who each
received a $10 Yogurt Story gift
card! Way to go girls!!!

the 2 nd and 3 rd grade Bible Giants
who beat the 4 th and 5 th grade
Saints in the Sunday School Super
Bowl!!! Great job to all the teams!!
