Cluster Dialogue International – Energy: Sharing Experiences and
Good Practices on Cluster Internationalization and R&D-Projects
Hannover Messe Industrie, 10 April 2013
Chemie-Cluster Bayern (CCB)
Germany, Bavaria
Description of Cluster
Chemie-Cluster Bayern provides a network for companies and research institutes of
Bavaria’s chemical industry. The represents 250 global players, innovative SME and
powerful research facilities. Companies cover a broad range of chemical products and
technologies. Within the cluster initiative of the Bavarian state government Chemie-Cluster
Bayern promotes product and process innovations for new international markets in its two
business units “R&D” and “Market Development”. Cluster management sets up R&D
consortia, coordinates the acquisition of external funding, provides project management and
technology transfer services. The chemical sector is among the most important industrial
innovation drivers. This is why Chemie-Cluster Bayern bridges different industry sectors by
joint innovation projects in order to strengthen the entire high-tech location of Germany.
Cluster management discusses the concrete need for chemical innovation input with
developers and product managers from all industries: Together with strong industry partners,
the cluster thus introduces new companies into established development cooperations. Its
initiative "JUSTUS - young companies and start-ups" promotes innovative start-ups on global
chemical markets. Chemie-Cluster Bayern is an initiator of local innovation networks in
different sectors. Strategic alliances with international chemical sites, particularly in Europe
and Asia, help to improve global competitiveness of the cluster members. Regular events like
the annual "networking day" or the workshop series "Chemistry meets ..." (where chemical
companies can gain deep insights into the development processes of industrial key
accounts) also help Bavarian chemistry to keep its leading role as Germany's industrial
efficiency driver.
Internationalization – Good Practices
International Technology Transfer Programs
• Global networks of industrial customers presenting “challenge statements” to
chemical industry: cluster members jointly answer these challenge statements by
inhouse workshops worldwide
• Special initiatives to help academic start-ups into international business: e.g., CCB
and French partner clusters get their start-ups companies into touch with industrial
customers from the US
• 3 offices in China, jointly run with local authorities
• more than 20 partner clusters in Europe, more than 40 worldwide
Study “Hidden Markets for Bavaria’s Chemical Industry”
• CCB will analyze the global market volume for its members in new value chains and
develop strategies how to approach these markets within cluster initiatives

Research & Development-Focus related to energy topics
• Development of new materials for renewables, e.g. printed photovoltaics
• Battery optimization for e-mobility, certain research projects, e.g. thinner Cu-foils
• Cleaning of biogas, certain research projects, e.g. pilot cleaning device
• Activation of CO 2 , certain research projects, FP7-project “CEOPS”
• Bioeconomy Strategies, joint working council with French Departement Moselle
Other R&D projects of the cluster cover topics of plastics (including recycling), development
of fine chemicals for industrial applications, nanotechnology, surface treatment, dyes,
lacquers and adhesives. During the last three years, CCB has coordinated 40 R&D projects
with a total volume of 40 Mio. €. 200 local jobs in R&D have been created by these projects.
70% of all R&D projects already involve an industrial customer, 25% of all projects involve an
international partner.
