Authentic eyewitness accounts, factual information and student
experiences combine in iWitness; the Berlin, WWI Battlefields
and Holocaust Tour Resources from Rayburn Tours.

At Rayburn Tours, we pride ourselves on providing specialist History Tours which enhance your students’
understanding of the subject and we are dedicated to providing quality resources to support your students
both inside and outside the classroom. In iWitness, eyewitness accounts of the past combine with ‘I witness’
experiences of today to help students acquire a deeper understanding of events and recognise the historical
significance of locations they may visit on tour.
With iWitness, students are able to ‘step into the story’ and make their learning more than an event in a book,
or an answer to an examination question.
iWitness is provided free of charge to all groups participating in a WWI Battlefields, Holocaust or Berlin
History Tour.
Pre, During and Post Tour
Developed in line with the National Curriculum, iWitness contains
tasks and activities designed for use before, during and after your
tour, helping students to prepare for their visits and providing a
useful link between the classroom and a successful History Tour.
What's Included?
Each resource contains a wealth of information, eyewitness
accounts and activities relevant to the respective subject and
destination, the details of which may be found on the following
pages. All, however, comprise the following core elements:
Teacher Resources
Offering guidance and support, the Teacher Resources provide
in-depth information about your tour destination, tasks to give
to students and information on how to incorporate the resources
into your existing teaching.
Student Fieldbook
Each student will be provided with their own, pocket-size booklet in
which to record factual information and responses to their in class
activities. Once on tour, students are encouraged to reflect on and
combine this with their own thoughts and experiences.
Our WWI Battlefields iWitness study resources address key events from the
Schlieffen Plan of 1903 through to the Versailles Treaty and help students to
understand the realities of WWI for those involved. As they study eyewitness
accounts from a range of perspectives and receive information pertaining to the
activity of family members and local regiments, students begin to appreciate what
the ‘empty field’ awaiting them represented during the events of 1914 – 1918.
All our WWI Battlefield tours are accompanied by our iWitness tour resources which include:
• Teacher Resources
• Eyewitness accounts
• Excursion Guides
• Personal contact with Jim Harkness,
our battlefield specialist
• Student Fieldbook
• Google Earth files
Your Teacher Resources contain curriculum based information,
worksheets, fact files and visit information. They are accompanied
by a large selection of eyewitness accounts and detailed
information and anecdotal stories about battlefield visits.
When used alongside the Teacher Resources to record key facts,
observations and experiences, the Student Fieldbook helps students
to take the knowledge that they have acquired in the classroom out
onto the battlefields.
Your Personal Battlefield Specialist
Jim Harkness is a Principal Teacher (Curriculum) in a large
Scottish secondary school. In his 34 years of teaching he has
organised 40 battlefield trips and his 4 history books are used in
schools in 14 countries.
Upon booking your tour, Jim can provide you with fascinating
facts and anecdotes relating to your local regiment and heroic
tales of local V.C. winners. In addition, should your students
have relatives who are known to have fought in the War, Jim will
endeavour to uncover information about them, their regiment and
the battles they fought – in many cases tailoring your itinerary to
visit these locations.
This is a truly unique service available upon request and
compliments iWitness, helping to personalise your students’
experience and make their learning memorable.
Preserved WW1 trenches at vimy memorial Park
In December 2011, staff and students from Crompton House
CofE School headed to ypres and the Somme to visit the
WWI Battlefields. Here, two students share their experience.
“As we write, the film ‘War Horse’ is showing in the cinemas and ‘Birdsong’
has just been aired on television. Although they both give a brilliant visual
representation of what life was like during the First World War, nothing quite
compares to visiting the battlefields of France and Belgium themselves.
In December, we visited these aged battlefields and war memorials. We stayed
for four days and, whilst there, gained a real understanding of what war life was
like and experienced the raw emotion that came with it. We visited Lochnagar
Crater and Thiepval Memorial and Interpretative Centre. Thiepval is an eyeopening
place you cannot miss; there are over 72,000 names of unidentified
British soldiers alone. Next were Newfoundland Park and Vimy Ridge Memorial
and Historical Interpretation Centre where we experienced for ourselves what life
would have been like in the trenches.
“The trip was a humbling experience that
has truly left its mark.”
On the third day we visited Langemarck Cemetery, a mass grave for German
soldiers where the bleak, dark stone contrasts sharply with the white stone of the
British cemeteries. Essex Farm Cemetery holds the grave of the youngest soldier
who died, just 15 years of age.
To end our trip we attended the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in ypres.
On a trip such as this, you have to witness this emotional ceremony that has
been held virtually every night since the end of the war. Looking at the engraved
names of men who fell in ypres, and listening to the trumpets play, really brings
home the meaning of the trip and the realisation that even though the war is
over, the men who took part will never be forgotten. As a whole, the trip was a
humbling experience that has truly left its mark.”
The group departed in the early
morning, arriving in France mid
afternoon. Heading straight to
Albert, they visited the Musée
to their hotel in ypres.
D a y 2
Following breakfast, they spent the
morning visiting Lochnagar Crater in
La Boiselle, Thiepval Memorial and
Interpretative Centre and the ulster
Tower. The afternoon was spent at
Newfoundland Park and on a guided
tour of Vimy Ridge. The evening
was spent at a local bowling alley.
D a y 3
They spent the day visiting the Trench
of Death in Diksmuide, Langemarck
Cemetery, Essex Farm Cemetery,
Sanctuary Wood/Hill 62 and Tyne
Cot Cemetery. They arrived back in
ypres in time to explore the Christmas
markets before their evening meal at
a local restaurant. At 8pm, the group
made its way to the Menin Gate to
watch the Last Post Ceremony.
D a y 4
They enjoyed some free time
in ypres before boarding their
coach back to the uK.
ypres became a national focal point for the war along the Western Front, becoming just as
important to the press and communities at home as it did to the military. The men who fought
here were exposed to some of the most hideous conditions ever encountered by the British
Army and it was here where, in one day, the greatest loss of human life in modern British warfare
occurred. Today, ypres and the Somme remain important sites of remembrance for all.
WWI iWitness contains specific information about this area, encouraging students to study accounts
from those involved and reflecting on and combining it with their own experiences on the battlefields.
Containing the names of over 54,000 officers and men from
British and Commonwealth forces who have no known grave,
the Menin Gate memorial commemorates those missing on
the battlefields of ypres and Flanders before 16th August 1917.
Observing the Last Post Ceremony, which has taken place here at
8pm almost every evening since the war, provides an opportunity
to consider the impact of this historic event on families, regiments
and communities, and remember those who gave their lives.
The dark shade from the trees surrounding the cemetery
visiting this cemetery, the contrast with those cemeteries
cared for by the Commonwealth is immediately obvious.
For many, it can be difficult to imagine the particular horrors
and conditions of trench life during WWI. A visit to Sanctuary
quite accurate experience of what trench systems were like.
From June 2012, visitors to this interactive museum (located
in the Cloth Hall in the centre of ypres) can experience a
range of accounts from witnesses of the war in Flanders,
including those from soldiers, nurses, children and refugees.
The newly extended interactive section allows students
to discover stories of WWI and a trip up the Belfry tower
provides fantastic views of the once destroyed area.
Ty n e C o t B r i t i s h C e m e t e r y
'Too many people' were the first comments made by a student as
she looked around, the largest British cemetery on the Western
Front. With 11,956 graves of Commonwealth soldiers buried
between October 1914 and September 1918, this cemetery brings
the sheer scale of sacrifice into a stark reality. Along the back
wall of the cemetery the names of an additional 34,927 soldiers
missing on the battlefields from August 1917 to the end of the
war are inscribed in a continuation of those at the Menin Gate.
In addition, our WWI Battlefield specialist, Jim Harkness, can help
you identify graves belonging to men from your home town.
The Canadian Memorial on Hill 145, Vimy Ridge, overlooks the battlefield
of 1917 and marks the site of the great Canadian victory in one of
the fiercest battles of WWI. The memorial acts as a tribute to over
66,000 Canadians who died in action whilst serving their country. The
nearby Vimy Interpretative Centre complements the guided tours of
the site’s tunnels and trenches and highlights the value of international
From 1916, the old chalk quarries that lay under the town of Arras
were transformed into a labyrinth in which 24,000 men slept,
One of the most important WWI sites along the Western
From Nazi Germany to the Cold War and from the unified German Empire to
the re-unified Germany of today, Berlin offers an intriguing and hugely diverse
history. With the evidence of so many different eras readily accessible to groups
whilst on tour, Berlin iWitness coherently combines them all to give each group
the information relevant to their particular tour and learning objectives.
All our Berlin tours are accompanied by our iWitness tour resources which include:
• Teacher Resources
• Student Fieldbook
• Walking tours
• Eyewitness accounts
• Google Earth files
Your Berlin Teacher Resources contain curriculum information,
study topic worksheets and visit information to provide support
when teaching any of the following periods in Berlin’s history:
• The German Empire
• The Weimar Republic
• The Third Reich
• The Holocaust
• The Cold War
• Reunification
A selection of eyewitness accounts from a range of perspectives
refer to locations you may visit whilst on tour and assist students
in recognising the location’s historical significance and its effect on
individuals at various periods in history. In their Student Fieldbook,
students have the means to document their in-class learning, their
own experiences and any additional information they discover
whilst on tour to create a valuable resource post tour.
Walking Tours
In addition, you will also receive a selection of walking tours, each
specifically designed to complement a particular period in Berlin’s
history: ‘Nazi Corridors of Power’, ‘Jewish District of Berlin’, ‘A City
Divided’, and ‘The End of Communism and the Fall of the Berlin Wall’.
Information about influential landmarks is incorporated into each and
aims to provide a deeper understanding of the sites to be visited.
unit 3 – From Kaiser to Führer Germany 1900-1945.
The most memorable excursion of the trip is difficult to pin down. Certainly the visit
to Sachsenhausen concentration camp was very memorable. For the students to
walk through the gates adorned with the words ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ into a sparse
and chilling memorial to those who lost their lives, really brings home the reality
and more brutal side of the Nazi regime and, with the proximity of houses built pre
1930 to the entrance of the camp, the German people's acceptance of this brutality.
“It was interesting and a great way to add
a degree of first hand experience to my
understanding of the course.”
Farnborough Sixth Form College student
Another popular excursion for students is the Gedenkstätte Hohenschönhausen.
Appreciating the activities of the STASI and their operations in East Berlin during the
era of the Berlin Wall gives students a broader view of the city’s 20th century history.
The students’ feedback was very positive; they liked the range of visits
and commented on how much the trip helped to consolidate their
learning from the classroom which is very encouraging to hear!
My advice for anyone planning a trip to Berlin would be: firstly, to arrange the trip at
an appropriate time of year to fit in with your teaching of the module. Secondly, get
the length of the trip right – enough to fit a lot in, but always leaving the students
wanting more! Finally, get a good balance between excursions and free time; it is
tempting to ‘overfill’ your itinerary, but factoring in some free time is also important.
As tour leader, the trip to Berlin is fantastic and something that I really enjoy doing
not only for the historical interest of the city, but for the enjoyment and interest it
gives the students, which goes way beyond what they can get in the classroom."
During the time of occupation in the Second World War, many
people in European countries risked their reputations, belongings,
families and lives in protecting victims of the Nazi regime. In the
Netherlands there are many accounts from those who went into
hiding, others who were sent to camps, as well as those who tried
to help. Perhaps the two most well known are the stories of Anne
Frank and Corrie ten Boom. This is definitely a ‘must’ visit for
anybody learning about the Holocaust, particularly for KS3 (S1/2)
students identifying with the realities of perpetrator policies.
S T u Dy E XCu R S I O N S
A n n e F r a n k H o u s e
Anne Frank wrote her diary for a number of years, including those spent in hiding
in Amsterdam. Anne’s diary reflects the day-to-day life of a young Jewish girl living
in Amsterdam, so providing KS3 (S1/2) students with one way of studying the
effects of the Holocaust. Visiting the Anne Frank House museum and viewing the
documents and objects which are preserved and displayed within the ‘Secret Annex’
allows students to understand and reflect on the story of a family who, ultimately,
were sent to the Nazi camps after being denounced by a Dutch informer.
C o r r i e t e n B o o m –T h e H i d i n g P l a c e
Corrie ten Boom and her family lived in the Dutch city of Haarlem. They chose to
help a number of Jewish people, so putting themselves at risk. The choices made by
Corrie ten Boom allow students to reflect on the complex role of rescuers during the
Holocaust. On a visit to Corrie’s home students can see the hiding place, a small area
behind a wall in Corrie’s bedroom where those persecuted sought cover.
From 1942 to 1944, Westerbork served as a Nazi transit camp for Dutch Jews
before they were deported to extermination camps in German occupied
Poland. A visit to a transit camp can provide a link between the persecution at
'home' and the desperate fight for life in the concentration and extermination
camps, helping students understand the chronology of the Holocaust.
J e w i s h H i s t o r i c a l M u s e u m
To begin to understand the events of the Holocaust, students need to reflect on who
the Jewish people of Europe were before the events. A visit to the Jewish Historical
Museum allows students to reflect on the valuable role played by individual Dutch
Jewish people and the vibrant Jewish community living in the Netherlands prior to
its destruction during the Holocaust.
On 20th January 1942, a meeting took place in the Wannsee Villa to plan the
implementation of what the Nazis called ‘The Final Solution’. This was the planned
deportation and extermination of all Jewish people in Europe. This meeting
has become known as the Wannsee Conference and a visit here is crucial for
students studying features of totalitarian dictatorship in Nazi Germany. The
museum not only gives an insight into Nazi politics and methods, ghettos, death
camps and life in concentration camps, but also demonstrates the bureaucracy
involved in planning the mass murder of thousands of innocent Europeans
its cold, concrete interior with few glimpses of the outside world. Inside, art,
texts, media terminals, personal photographic collections, ceremonial objects
and furniture take students on a journey through two millennia of German and
Auschwitz I was used originally to hold those deemed political prisoners by
the Nazis and their collaborators and Auschwitz II, better known as Birkenau,
was the purpose-built death camp constructed to murder many thousands
At the museums in Bayeux, Ste. Mère Église, Benouville and especially in Caen,
your group can see and touch some of the hardware used in Operation Overlord.
Tanks such as Sherman, Churchill and Panzer, aircraft such as Spitfire, Dakota,
Mustang and all manner of military equipment are exhibited in vivid dioramas.
S t e . M è r e É g l i s e
In Ste. Mère Église, American airborne troops came down over the
burning town with many landing in the square and one getting snagged
on the church spire. At the church you can see a stained glass window
commemorating D-Day along with a dummy u.S. soldier suspended from
the roof by his parachute! Adjacent to the square is an excellent and
extensive museum dedicated to the airborne assault on 5th/6th June.
B e n o u v i l l e
At Benouville, your students can hear about the capture of Pegasus
Bridge by glider-borne troops. At the canal side stands Café Gondrée,
where intelligence was gathered by the French resistance to help the
Allies and where British airmen were regularly hidden. A trip here can
include a visit to Pegasus Bridge Museum, which now houses the original
bridge, and the nearby Ranville Commonwealth War Cemetery.
From the coach park on the cliff top your students will get an excellent view
of the remains of Port Winston and the prefabricated ‘Mulberry’ harbour.
Museums in Arromanches include the 360º museum, in which images are
cleverly projected to encourage the feeling that you are in the heart of the
D-Day action, and the Musée du Débarquement (D-Day Landing Museum) which
illustrates how the harbour was conceived, built, transported and assembled.
The importance of Greek and Roman civilisations on our modern world cannot be
underestimated. People throughout the ages have studied these civilisations and have
been drawn to visit the areas where these people lived and where these cultures began.
Thousands still visit the areas around Greece and Italy to see for themselves the
evidence of the lives of these early civilisations, the impact they had on their
surroundings and the indications of the various struggles between them.
For those studying Classics at KS3, KS4 or KS5 a tour to the area will definitely inspire and
enthral. It can assist in understanding the links between town planning, architecture and
social structures, to the visions of culture to be found in plays and other works of the time.
Rayburn Tours has developed a set of tours to allow students to see Classic civilisations in a
number of settings, supporting and complementing academic work studied in the classroom.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in Europe with over 3,000 years of history, culture and
architecture. Steeped with intrigue and drama, a visit to the Eternal City is an excellent way of
introducing your students to the delicate link between Roman culture as it is written in drama
and play and the expression of this culture still demonstrated today in its architecture. As well as
a Classics destination, it can also bring a context to studying the influence of Rome on Britain and
Western Europe. In essence, Rome is truly an enriching experience for Classics students of all
ages and can help develop an understanding of the social and cultural contexts of Roman society.
The most famous monument in Ancient Rome, the Coliseum
is considered one of the greatest feats of Roman architecture
and engineering, seating up to 60,000 citizens. Venturing inside
its walls enables students to understand the complex political
history behind the ancient remains and can demonstrate the use
and abuse of Roman power. An expert local guide will bring to
life the importance of this monument to Imperial Roman power.
R o m a n F o r u m
According to tradition, this site is believed to have played a part
in Rome’s history and is included in the stories about Romulus
from as early as the 7th century BC and, later, becoming the
centre of political and economic activity during the Republic’s
supremacy. The Roman Forum answers many questions relating
to Roman life at the height of the Empire’s power and throughout
its subsequent decline, helping your students to understand more
about the social and political implications of living in the Capitol.
"Every year, on an invariably wet autumn afternoon, I will say
to a year 10 Latin class, “you are going to meet a word you
shall never forget; ‘polyspaston’ (a builder’s crane)”. A story
about the building of the Arch of Titus, which stands in the
Roman Forum is then read, and Latin scholars are enthused.
Fast forward to another invariably wet winter afternoon to a year 13 Ancient History
class, this time it’s imperial building projects. “What does the Arch of Titus tell us about
how the Flavians viewed their achievements?” Lots of discussion about the nature of
everything imperial ensues, and about how victors dictate how history is viewed.
Then those same boys give up four days of their Easter holiday to visit the Rome of
their text books and their imaginations. They walk through the Forum, the remaining
marble reflects the fading glory of the Roman Empire, seeing ruins that may or may
not hold meaning for them, and suddenly there will be the shout “POLySPASTON!!!”
“The excitement of discovering tunnels,
finding mosaics hidden in the undergrowth...
all feeling that they were generally
discovering something not seen before.”
Never prompted – years of this trip has seen this happen. Onlookers see a
hoard of rampaging barbarian school boys, and look on in amusement as
they grab their cameras and furiously shoot the Arch of the legend Titus.
Earlier that day, the same onlookers would have seen the same hoard exploring the
port of Ostia Antica. The excitement of discovering tunnels, finding mosaics hidden
in the undergrowth, humming the Indiana Jones theme in a discordant mass, finding
swords in the gift shop; all of them feeling that they were genuinely discovering
something not seen before with enthusiasm that is normally lacking in a teenage boy!
Those discoveries remind me exactly why a trip to Rome is essential for any
student of Classics, and more valuable than anything found in a text book."
and Roman ancient history. The nearby Roman city of Pompeii
and the wealthy holiday resort of Herculaneum lie in ruins whilst
the three Doric Greek temples of Paestum stand amongst the
best preserved in the world. The Bay of Naples is one of interest,
excitement and intrigue for any student of Classics and a visit here
can certainly assist in understanding how architecture and street
planning complemented other social aspects of Roman culture.
S T u Dy E XCu R S I O N S
P o m p e i i
A visit to Pompeii will give students a superb insight into day-to-day Roman
life before 79AD and is particularly beneficial for those studying Classical
Roman civilisation. This important archaeological site clearly shows the urban
architecture and town planning created by the Romans in their religious,
political, aesthetic, cultural and social context. Wandering through its cobbled
streets, you will see examples of chariot ruts, original lead piping and ancient
Roman graffiti. This will all be brought to life by an expert local guide who
will take you on a journey through time. you will also be able to see the
famous casts of the Pompeians tragically unable to escape the eruption.
P a e s t u m
Founded by the Greeks in circa 600 B.C. and known as 'Poseidonia' in honour of
the Greek sea god Poseidon, the town was later referred to as Paestum by the
Romans. Today Paestum boasts three well preserved Doric Greek temples, ruins
of ancient houses and a museum of Greek artefacts. Students can learn about
Greek and Roman architecture, the transition from Greek to Roman domination
and Roman politics during the second Punic wars. A real highlight is 'The Diver’s
Tomb' which is one of only a few Greek wall paintings to have survived.
H e r c u l a n e u m
The residential town of Herculaneum with its many wealthy Roman villas is quite a contrast
to its neighbour, the working settlement of Pompeii. Although lost during the same
series of eruptions that destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum was covered by a pyroclastic
flow and for this reason much of the timber has survived in a charred condition. Pieces
of furniture, ornaments, papyruses and wooden objects have been perfectly preserved
and, by studying these, students can gain a real insight into city life in Roman Italy.
V i l l a O p l o n t i s
The Villa Oplontis, also known as the Villa Poppaea, was an elite otium-style villa
used as a summer retreat rather than a permanent residence. Its style and scale
suggest it was an important residence and it has been linked to Poppaea Sabina,
the second wife of the Emperor Nero. A visit here reveals all the architectural
features of a traditional Roman elite villa; baths, cubiculii, triclinii and frescos as well
as indoor and outdoor gardens, a guest suite and an outdoor swimming pool. A visit
here allows students an insight into the lives of slaves within Roman society.
The Greeks began the colonisation of Sicily around 750 BC and named
the island 'Trinakrias' meaning 'triangle' due to its geographical form.
They established a major trading capital on the island at Syracuse,
described by Cicero as 'the greatest Greek city and most beautiful of
them all'. With the introduction of Greek culture came their religion
and many temples were built. However, with the west of the island
inhabited mainly by Carthaginians, hostility led to the Greek Punic
Wars, lasting until 242BC, when Sicily became the first Roman
province outside the Italian peninsula. Classics students will gain a
deeper appreciation of the fundamental aspects of Greek and Roman
civilisation on this Mediterranean island rich in history and culture.
The magnificent remains found at the Valley of the Temples are the legacy of the
Greek colony that was established here in 581BC and subsequently taken over by
the Romans in 210BC. Students will see many fine examples of temples, altars,
catacombs and shrines. This is a most impressive site with the major temples
dedicated to Zeus, Heracles, Concord and Hera, lined up high on an escarpment with
their main facades facing east to catch the rays of the rising sun. A World Heritage
Site, this visit demonstrates the importance of religion within Greek culture.
G r e e k A m p i t h e a t r e , Ta o r m i n a
A breathtaking visit, the Greek amphitheatre in Taormina has the dramatic backdrop
of Mount Etna and the Sicilian coastline. The theatre was begun by the Greeks in the
3rd century BC and altered by the Romans when they arrived in Taormina in the 1st
century AD. Whereas the Greeks used the theatre for drama, the Romans introduced
gladiators to the arena and the structural changes that were made clearly reflect this.
Providing an insight into both Greek and Roman ancient history, the city was once
the most powerful Greek city in the world. A major centre for the arts and learning,
many of the world’s greatest thinkers such as Plato and Archimedes headed here
during its golden era. Athens itself struggled to rival Syracuse, as it gave birth to Greek
comic theatre. Our local guide will take you through the site, before entering into 'the
Ear of Dionysius', as named by Caravaggio, to showcase its outstanding acoustics.
The ancient Romans lived in an extremely turbulent and volatile
environment. As well as gory battles to contend with at the Coliseum
and, at times, the terrifying and somewhat unstable political structure
of their government, there was also the devastating effect of the
eruption of Mount Vesuvius to deal with. A two-centre tour to the
ancient city of Rome combined with a trip to the Sorrentine Peninsula
will enable your students to fully understand and appreciate not only
how difficult life was for the Romans, but also how their advanced
thinking has helped to shape the world that we live in today.
