What is a competitiveness cluster 

• The combination of companies, training centres and public and private 

research centres, engaged in a partnership, in a geographical area 

(Provence-Alpes-Riviera Region for Pole Mer PACA) 

• To create synergies around common innovative maritime projects. This 

R&D projects shall meet four main requirements : 

To create new wealth with high added value and qualified jobs ; 

To be able to position itself on world markets that are characterised by 

a high potential for growth ; 

To define objectives and means of an efficient strategy for economical 

development and innovation 

Pôle Mer PACA and Pôle Mer Bretagne are 2 International 

competitiveness clusters recognized by the French government in 2005 

(among 17 Int’l clusters in France)

GIRAC: Integrated management of coastal sewer 

network discharges 

GIRAC project aims at improving bathing water 

by developing operational tools enabling to know in 

real-time sanitation discharges and their evolution 

with regard to meteorological conditions.

RENOUV ‘EAU : a desalination plant with a renewable 

energy source 

• Feasibility study for coupling 

renewable energies with 

managed water ressources 

• The aim of this project is to 

perform a feasibility study 

comparing the whole coupling 

possibilities between 

renewable energy sources and 

processes for sea water 

desalination in coastal areas.

Concerted development of coastal areas 

• The Mediterranean coasts are 

faced to important pressures: 

demography, tourism, climate 

risks, pollution and management of 

water resource etc. 

• But also a vital potential for natural 

resources and biodiversity 

• Pôle Mer is seeking to contribute to 

the valorization of coastal zones 

with ambitious settlement projects 

which take a long-term approach to 

environmental challenges,

• The goal of this project is to 

test a new procedure for highyield 

production of microalgae 

for use in the production of a 

new biofuel.

• BIOMARINE is striving to become the leading French hatchery for 

marine fish biological: sea bass, gilt-head bream and shade fish.

Maritime Safety and Security 

• SECMAR : a safety system for property, people and facilities within a 

sensitive maritime zone 

• CAPASEATY : it develops an observation & intervention system dedicated 

to extended marine safety including many risks 

• MWPS : a non lethal response after a maritime intrusion 

• CONDOR : Optronic system for surveillance of offshore platforms 

integrating inertial sensors of localization, infrared and video cameras, laser 

rangefinder

Naval and Nautism 

•ECOPAINT : Marine coatings non toxic anti stains with reduction of 

trail : to eliminate organic solvents, to inhibit the adherence and the 

growth of the marine stains, to support the durability of the 

performances of coatings. 

•PRONOSTIC : Real-time prognosis of faults in critical vessel systems. 

Setting up an e-maintenance platform designed to enable the 

development of new prognostics technologies for naval systems 

maintenance. 

•MARVEST : Maritime Virtual Relity and simulator Technology

Exploitation of marine energy resources 

• EFEM : offshore wind farm 

• CETOP : setting up a centre of expertise dedicated to offshore exploration/production 

techniques, for innovation and services for the industry. 

• MOHICAN (Maintains Out of Hydrates In Cold Areas of Network) : allows production 

jumpers between Xmas trees and manifolds to remain free of hydrate plugs by using a 

temperature controlled heating device that can be easily integrated under any thermal 

insulation. Full scale qualification has been performed in 2006 

•CHEPP (Hydrodynamique Behavior in Shallow Water) : focus on two hydrodynamic 

problems in shallow water: low frequency wave loads (innovative full QTF computation 

have been developped and validated) and dynamic variation of added mass for under keel 

clearance (tool development and model test in 2007) 

•STRIP3 : development of the functions for automatic anomaly detections with an AUV 

(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and to present mosaic data in a way allowing the 

reduction of the time required for recorded data analysis by focusing on events of interest.
