Development NEWS Gift creates new “front door” to campus An impressive new front entrance now welcomes visitors to the Lake Erie College campus. Ground was broken in May, and the Anna and Ed Dunlap Family Courtyard was dedicated on Oct. 10, 2012. Edward B. Dunlap, chairman and CEO of Centimark Corporation, funded the entire construction project, which creates a new “front door” for Lake Erie College. Two curved brick gates topped with stone pineapples convey the universal symbol of welcome, and a lighted brick walkway leads students, alumni and community members to the campus. “Ed and Anna Dunlap have been good friends of the College for many years,” said President Victor. “We’re grateful for their vision and generosity, which made the project possible.” 28 LAKE ERIE | FALL ‘12
Scholarship fund reaches goal Dr. Lynde C. Steckle was a beloved professor of psychology at Lake Erie College from 1963 through 1976. In 2007, four of his former students began an endowed scholarship fund as a tribute to a remarkable man. We are pleased to announce that this fund has now exceeded the $50,000 minimum needed to be fully endowed. During the past five years, 49 alumni and friends have contributed to the Dr. Lynde C. Steckle Endowed Scholarship Fund. Scholarships from this fund will be awarded to students who are majoring in psychology and plan to pursue careers in this field. The first scholarship will be awarded for fall 2013. The College extends its gratitude to all those who contributed to the fund, with special accolades to Susan Alexander Cammock ’66 and Susan Vanderwal Cowling ’67, who spearheaded the idea and led the fundraising efforts; Jane Tumpson ’69, who carried out a successful challenge to her class; and Elizabeth (Bette) Havens Abraham ’68, who gave several major gifts to put the fund over the top. Gifts can still be made to the fund, which will help to increase the amount of the scholarships that are awarded. Barbeau is the new vice president for institutional advancement at Lake Erie College, effective Sept. 17. He brings more than 18 years of experience in development, non-profit management, institutional leadership and marketing to this important administrative position. Barbeau received his bachelor of arts degree with a major in business administration from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. He led advancement efforts in various leadership capacities at Carroll College, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Northland College in Ashland, Wis. Previous to his career in advancement, he worked as regional marketing director for Up with People, Inc. Barbeau looks forward to being part of the Lake Erie College administration. “I am honored to join President Victor’s team as he continues to lead the College into its next prosperous stages,” he said. President Victor extends a warm welcome to Barbeau. “I am pleased Marc is joining our administrative team. He possesses all the skills and talents necessary for the position. I eagerly anticipate his smooth transition into his new role,” said Victor. Barbeau succeeds Scott Evans, who served as vice president for institutional advancement for six years. Sue Dreitzler, who was interim president of the College from 2005-2006, served as interim vice president for institutional advancement after Evans’ departure and assisted in the transition.
