She has consistency and stays strong under pressure. She can be counted on to come through in a tight situation, Elsey is our anchor and Martin is much improved over last year. Warriors survive in overtime The Lutheran High Westland girls basketball team proved to be resilient Tuesday night, holding offMacomb Lutheran North in overtime, 63-62, in a Metro Conference game. "We only trailed twice, but our girls never game up and it was a good win for us," said Warriors coach Kevin Wade, whose team improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Metro. After North took a 53-52 advantage with only five seconds left in regulation, Lutheran Westland's Katey Ramthun was fouled on a putback at the buzzer and split a pair of free throws to sent it toOT. Lutheran Westland then outscored the Mustangs 10-9 in the four-minute extra session. GIRLS BASKETBALL Junior guard Allyson Yankee paced the Warriors with 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Junior Rebecca Refenes, a 6-foot-2 center, added 19 points and 16 boards. Rachel Storck and Lauren Gieschen each tallied six. Allisen Kuppe scored 15 for North ¢2-5,0-1) before fouling out. Michelle Irvin contributed 14, while Deanna Adams had 13 before fouling out as well. Lutheran Westland was only ll-of-24 from the line, missing eight in the final period. CLARENCEVILLE 51, HARPER WOODS 45: Senior forward Chenay Kemp's 20 points and 16 rebounds carried Livonia Clarenceville (3-2,1-0) to the Metro Conference triumph Tuesday at home over the Pioneers (0-4, 0-1). Senior guard Amanda Moody chipped in with 12, while sophomore guard Ashley Devon added 10 for the Trojans, who bolted to a 22-8 first-quarter advantage. Clarenceville had problems at the foul line, making only 5-of-20, including 4-of-18 in the final period. Keyra Morris and Sarah Deramo tallied 13 and 11, respectively, for Harper Woods. HURON VALLEY 42, MT, CARMEt 41: Nicole Schaffer's driving layup with 32 seconds to go proved to be the difference Tuesday as Westland Huron Valley Lutheran (3-3) pulled out the non-conference win at Wyandotte Mount Carmel (3-2). The Hawks, who rallied with a 16-10 fourth-period run, were led by Katie Kipfmiller and Lauren Adlof, each scoring 15 points. Adlof also grabbed 11 rebounds, while teammate Nicole Smith pulled down nine. Jessica Halasy's 14 points paced the Comets, who rallied with an 18- 11 third-period run. Point guard Charlie Henry (Agape Christian) chipped in with 10 points and seven assists. Scoring 23 points for St. Xavier (7-3) was Adam Gregoriou. Madonna took a 46-45 lead into halftime and held on in the final 20 minutes, hitting 13-of-24 field-goal tries (54 percent). On Saturday, host Goshen (Ind.) College belted Madonna University, 67-60, in a nonconference women's basketball game. Senior guard Caryn Inman scored 19 points and collected nine rebounds for MU (1-5), with Cali Crawford and Christie Carrico each tallying 16. Goshen's Katie Sowers scored 15 points to lead the victorious Maples ¢5-5). Patriot grapplers runners-up at Berkley Team runner-up Livonia Franklin earned three individual titles in Saturday's 17-school Berkley Invitational wrestling tournament. Anchor Bay captured the team title, while Lincoln Park placed third. Individual winners for the Patriots included Jared Pieknik (112), Matt Hintz ¢135 pounds) and Brandon Smith ¢140). "Smith is finally looking like the wrestler we knew he could be when he was a freshman," Franklin coach Dave Chiola said. "We still have a few guys that we need to get moving in the right direction, and who knows what we'll be capable of." "Each time we compete we improve on something," Chiola said. "We still have a long way to go, but it's nice to see improvement. In the past we peaked early and then hung on. The 2-0 Rockets, who overcame a 26-25 halftime deficit, were led by senior guard Keshawn Martin's 17 points. Senior guard Earl Hardison chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals, while senior forward Stefan Marken added 12 points before fouling out. Jordan Manier, a 6-foot-8 senior, came off the bench to grab eight rebounds and block four shots. Caleb Dean and Chris Bellamy scored 16 and 14, respectively, for the Wildcats (1-2). On Saturday, Travis Jones scored 19 points to pace Howardsville Christian (1-2) past the Hawks in the consolation game, 76-60. On an even Kiel Livonia bowler captures Alro Steel title There is competition at several levels for the youth bowlers as the Michigan High School Athletic Association's boys and girls bowling season got underway on Dec. 1. Bowling is now the fastest growing high school sport in the USA. If you get the chance to go over to the lanes during the competition, you would be amazed at the enthusiasm and true school spirit on display. The late Dan Ottman organized the Michigan Junior Masters Association (MJMA) over 20 years ago to provide toplevel youth scratch bowling competition on a monthly basis at different sites around the state. It's a training ground for the best youth bowlers to gain knowledge through expert training and have the opportunity to earn substantial scholarship money as well. Alro Steel Corp. of Jackson has been the main sponsor for several years of this event, which attracts many outstanding boys and girls from all over Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as Canada. The newest champion is Livonia's Michael Kiel, who captured the 18th annual Alro Steel Classic last month at Airport Lanes in Jackson. Kiel had the high game of the tournament with a 279 as he defeated Brian McMahon of Saginaw, 214-196 in the championship match, earning $400 in scholarship money. Kiel became one of the two .Gold qualifiers, meaning he will represent The MJMA this July in Detroit during the National U.S. Bowling Congress Youth tournament. On the girls side, Megan Warner of Grandville defeated Sarah Lokker of New Baltimore, 199-187, to win the title and $250 in scholarship money. All bowling fans are invited to come out and watch the MJMA bowlers because it's quite a show. There were over 600 paid entries, an amazing feat for a one-day event. Thanks to the organizational skills of John Chmelko Sr., along with John Jr., the event was a huge success. The following age-group winners earned a commemorative wristwatch including: Under-50: Tom Roberts, 44, of Melvindale (729 series); 50-59: Doug Roberts, 59, of Melvindale (740); 60-64: Douglas Balint, 60, of Flat Rock (740); 65-69: Anthony McCauley, 67, of Detroit (710); 70-74: Tony Loiacano, 73, of Warren (707); 75-79: defending champion, Scotty Laughland, 77» of Windsor, Ontario (694); 80-and-over: Milton Patten, 80, of River Rouge (725). Ted Kress of Redford videotaped the highlights and it might be run on some local access TV stations soon. American Bowling Congress Hall-of- Famers on hand to bowl included Tony Lindemann and Jimmy Schiroeder. Three bowlers came from San Diego, Calif., with one each fromIdaho, Buffalo, N.Y. and Minneapolis, Minn., along with five from Canada. Over 200 competitors stayed afterwards for a nice buffet dinner.
