SAICA Awards Ceremony 2010
Top performing students for 2009 and
2010 were honoured at an awards ceremony
hosted by the School of Accounting,
in partnership with the South African Institute
of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
Three UKZN students, Jacques van Ravesteyn,
Saadiya Adam, and Akash Dowra, were in the
top 10 in the Public Practice Examinations
set by the Independent Regulatory Board for
Auditors.
The Chair of the Eastern Region of
SAICA, Mr Mdu Zakwe, told students that
there are many challenges ahead of them
and that there is a shortage of chartered
accountants in South Africa. He added that
the country needs skills and this is why it is
important for universities to stay relevant
and to offer courses that challenge students.
Mr Zakwe noted that many UKZN graduates
around the country are making a
difference to the country’s economy. He
shared his experiences of studying at the
University and how he always made sure he
stayed ahead and worked hard.
Prizes were sponsored by SAICA and two
firms, Grant Thornton and KPMG.
Former UKZN scientist heads up National Space Agency
The newly-launched South African
National Space Agency (SANSA) recently
appointed Dr Sandile Malinga as its Chief
Executive Officer (CEO). A space physicist,
Malinga joined the former University of Natal
as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Physics
in 2002. He later became an Assistant
Dean in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture
at the Westville campus of the University
of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). In 2007 he left
the University to take up a position as Manager
of the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory,
which culminated in him becoming its
Managing Director.
Dr Malinga was initially appointed as
caretaker CEO of SANSA in January, a position
in which, according to the Minster of
Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor,
“he demonstrated his efficiency and capability”.
She added, “We are now looking forward
to seeing the Agency flourishing.”
