Thethird feature from South African director-on-the-rise Jahmil XT Qubeka, Of Good Report takesthe viewer on a hypnotic journey inside the mind of a mentally troubled man. The troublefor Parker Sithole begins when he meets the unquestionably beautiful Nolitha Ngubane at alocal tavern. Enthralled by her beauty, Parker experiences an ecstasy he’s never known beforeand from this mutual attraction, an illicit affair ensues. However, there’s just one problem: thebeautiful Nolitha is one of Parker’s pupils and is just sixteen years old. Parker quickly spiralsinto a deep obsession that ultimately turns to tragedy. This is a fascinating and passionateSouth African homage to classic film noir.See the short collection of films that have inspired the filmmaking career of South Africandirector Jahmil XT Qubeka in ‘The Films that Made Me’ (pages 78-79).32 34th Durban International Film Festival

closING FILMSATURDAY 27 JULYFREE ANGELA ANDALL POLITICAL PRISONERSDirected by Shola Lynch, United States, France 201227 July 18:30 Supernova; 28 July 12:00 Musgrave AEnglish, 101 minThis remarkable documentary looks at the exceptional life of activist and academic, Angela Davis, whose life and legend is intimately connected the the Black Panther movement. This grippingfilm revisits the experiences of Davis, beginning with her career in the philosophy department ofUCLA and her simultaneous life as a member of the communist party and Black Panthers, whileacknowledging her Alabama upbringing. Drawing fire for her political allegiances – labelledprovocation by the Reagan government – Davis soon became the victim of a campaign toban her from teaching in the United States. As a result, she found herself catapulted into theinternational limelight for her revolutionary beliefs. Following a series of death threats, shebought her first firearm – the first step towards a series of events that involved kidnappings andshootouts, and saw her ending up on the FBI’s ‘Ten Most Wanted’ list. Free Angela is no dry biopic– instead it unfolds dynamically through a series of intimate interviews with the woman herself, known to her supporters around the world as a symbol of freedom and people power.34th Durban International Film Festival 33
