ASSIGNMENTS
PAPER
Your paper can be a literature review, a research proposal, a completed study or any other
approved topic/format. Your goal should be to write a paper that will be submitted for a
conference and/or for publication. More information will be given in class (Final draft
due Friday, May 8 by 5:00 PM).
CRITICAL REVIEWS
You will write three critical reviews--from three different units, and representing a range
of paradigms--during the semester. For each review you will select a reading (with
instructor approval), summarize the main points of the reading, and evaluate the
methodological and/or theoretical contributions to the study of culture and
communication—using the guidelines listed below. Please make enough copies of your
outline for all students in the class. You should also be prepared to present your review
in an oral presentation to the class.
Guidelines for Critical Review Outlines:
Data-Based articles
a. Describe the metatheoretical assumptions/paradigm
b. Identify the question(s) investigated
b. Describe the methodology (sample, instruments etc.).
c. Summarize the findings
d. Evaluate the research (strengths and limitations) from both within and outside the
author’s paradigm:
e.g., was a theoretical context provided Is the research question appropriate given
previous research Are design and methodology appropriate
e. Evaluate the contribution of the article to the study of intercultural communication.
Theoretical articles
a. Describe the metatheoretical and theoretical context of the article (What are previous
research foundations).
b. Summarize the main points of the article.
c. Evaluate the theoretical perspective (from within and outside the author’s paradigm)
e.g. Does the author make sufficient reference to previous research Are theoretical
foundations and premises articulated Does the author indicate directions for
future research
d. Evaluate the contribution of the article to the study of culture and communication.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
In teams, you will lead the class discussion for one unit. (See handout)
EXAMS
There will be a midterm exam on March 24.
