Dear Parishioners of Holy Family,
From Your Pastor
The news of Pope Benedict’s resignation later this month still echoes throughout the Church.
His Holiness has served the People of God as our Chief Shepherd admirably since ascending to the
papacy after the death of Blessed John Paul II. Let us offer prayers of gratitude to God for the gift of
his papacy. At this time, it is also fitting to begin praying for the College of Cardinals as they prepare
to gather to elect the next successor to St. Peter. It is only pure conjecture who will emerge
from that conclave as the next pope. Many names, and many ideas are being floated about. I think
it is safe to say that much prayer and discernment will be needed. The Church finds herself at a
crossroads, like it has at many points throughout her long history. In my own reflection, I would find
it intriguing if the next pope was from Africa or South America or where the church is growing. It
would definitely put a different face on the church for the world to see. And yes, who wouldn’t like
to see a younger, more vibrant man emerge as the Visible Head of the Church Those of us who
were around remember the vibrancy and energy that Pope John Paul II brought to the worldwide
Church in the early years of his papacy. So, let us pray that as always God’s will be done.
We have a new addition to the parish staff, a part-time Information Technology Network Administrator
named Craig Kaufman. Most of you will probably never meet this young man as most of
his work will be after hours during the week. Like everywhere else, our parish is increasingly dependent
on technology to get our work done, to store information, and to do basic tasks. The
school, too, has increasing demands for a solid IT infrastructure. Craig was hired to help us make
sure our network is up to date and functioning. It is a very cost-effective solution to some of the issues
we are facing with aging computers and servers. This hire is by no means a luxury, it is a necessity
to control costs and to make sure we are making prudent decisions regarding our IT needs.
Craig has a full-time job in this area and has vast experience already working in parishes with
schools. He seemed to be a natural fit for what we needed. In the short time he has been here, he
has helped us considerably understand our network and is already helping us to make some decisions
and get things organized.
This weekend, per diocesan directives, we are doing the second round of in-pew solicitation
for the CMAA. I want to thank all of you who responded so generously to last weekend’s appeal.
Your generous gift will help so many people both within the parish, around the diocese, both in the
church and outside of it. This is the first time that the diocese has done it for a second weekend.
This is to make sure everyone gets an opportunity to respond and to reduce the costs of future
mailings. Please be patient and understanding as we go through this in-pew process a second time.
The transfiguration of Jesus read in the gospel at the masses this weekend is an event that
was meant to provide encouragement to the disciples as they grappled with who this Jesus was. He
had already told them of His upcoming death, but now they seem resplendent in glory. One can only
imagine what the event looked like. The Transfiguration teaches us that the passion of the Cross
leads to the glory of the Resurrection. It is meant to encourage us during this Lenten season why
we fast, pray and do acts of self-denial. This temporary “sufferings” are nothing in comparison to
the glory that awaits us in our resurrection. This event reminds us who Christ is and why we follow
him: he truly is the Son of God. As we leave the mountain, let us take heed of the Father’s words,
“This is my chosen Son, listen to him.” Let us listen to Christ attentively during this holy season. For
His words lead us to everlasting life.
God bless,
Fr. Dennis Paul,
Pastor

We are keeping up with
technology!
Holy Family is now providing
Online Giving as an electronic tool
for contributions so you can give
via the ‘web.’ Online Giving helps
you plan and manage your giving
throughout the year with scheduling
and reporting tools. This also
helps the parish streamline and
plan our cash flow.
Go to our parish website at www.holyfamilyshorewood.org to get
started today.
We invite you to help us bring colorful
and fragrant beauty to our Easter worship
though donations for Easter Flowers.
There is a special envelope in your
mailed packet or Online Giving. You
may chose to honor or remember a loved
one(s) by writing a name(s) on the Easter
Flowers’ envelope. Names received by
March 10 will be honored in the Easter
bulletin. Donations received that exceed
the needed Easter Flower purchases will
be utilized throughout the year to beautify
the church to the greater glory of our
Lord year round! Peace ~
The message of The Divine Mercy is simple: God loves us — all of us
and wants us to recognize that his mercy is greater than our sins. The
message urges us to call upon him with trust, receive his mercy, and
let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share his joy.
The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering
ABC:
A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly,
repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out
upon us and upon the whole world.
B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow
through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to
others just as He does to us.
C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of
His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus,
the more we will receive.
This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on
the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun
who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600
pages recording the revelations she received about God's mercy. Even
before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun
to spread.
Spend time this Lent learning more about the mercy of God. There are
devotional items available in the narthex for those who are interested
in learning more about the Divine Mercy.

A special invitation is extended to all the children in 5 th grade and up
assisting the priest during the liturgy and serving the members of
Holy Family Parish as well. Being a server is an opportunity to take
an essential role in the sacred celebrations of our Catholic Faith.
Two training opportunities will be available:
Tuesday, March 12 th 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 6 th 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
The following regulations regarding fasting and abstinence are observed in the United States during Lent:
• Catholics, ages 14 and over, are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays
of Lent.
• Individuals between 18 and 59 are also obliged to fast — eat only one full meal — on Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday. Eating two smaller meals is permitted if necessary to maintain strength, but eating
between meals is not.
• These obligations, however, do not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be seriously
affected.
• Catholics are also encouraged to do penance in other ways, such as prayer, acts of self-denial, almsgiving,
and through works of kindness and compassion.
Our 2 nd grade First Communion class is
working hard to understand the Mass.
Fr. Dennis will be facilitating 3 opportunities
for the 2 nd gr. Students and their
parents to attend an Explanation Mass.
They will learn about the gestures and
movements of the mass as well as
what the prayers mean.
Please continue to pray for our 2 nd grade students and
their families during this exciting time.
vessel with lid). The unconsecrated hosts will be brought up during the
gifts procession and consecrated during the Mass. When it is time to
receive communion, we ask that you stand in the aisle directly in front of
the cantor. The Extraordinary Minister will give you Holy Communion first.
Information cards will be available at the gifts table and kiosks in the
narthex. Any questions, contact Laura Dankler at (815) 725-6880,
ext.3706 or ldankler@holyfamilyshorewood.org.
